Quality Building Award 2020 results announced

Hong Kong Children’s Hospital scooped highest accolade alongside five outstanding projects

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 3 June 2021 – The results of Quality Building Award (QBA) 2020 were announced and presented at the QBA 2020 Award Presentation Ceremony today (2 June 2021) at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. The jury panel of 15 property sector leaders have recognised exceptional building projects under 6 award categories, with Hong Kong Children’s Hospital winning both the top Quality Excellence Award and the Grand Award of Hong Kong Non-Residential (New Building – Government, Institution of Community) Category.

Co-organised by nine leading professional institutions of the property sector in Hong Kong, the biennial Quality Building Award marks its 10th edition in 2020. This edition celebrates property professionals and projects which have transformed the community through building with heart and care. Other Grand Award winners include One * ArtLane (Hong Kong Residential (Single Building) Category); On Tai Estate Public Rental Housing Development (Hong Kong Residential (Multiple Buildings) Category); Victoria Dockside (Hong Kong Non-Residential (New Building – Non-Government, Institution of Community) Category); and Tai Kwun – The Cente for Heritage and Arts (Hong Kong Building (Renovation / Revitalization) Category).

Winner of the Quality Excellence Award, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital will receive the “Excellence Cup” on which names of all past and future winning projects have been or will be engraved. As the hall of fame of Hong Kong’s property sector, the Cup will be retained by current winner until the next edition.

“As you are aware, we have recently enacted local legislation to implement an improved electoral system in accordance with the amended Annex I and Annex II to the Basic Law approved by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. The improved electoral system will ensure the faithful implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” and “patriots administering Hong Kong”, effectively putting an end to the political chaos which impeded Hong Kong’s progress in recent years. It will provide an environment for all of us to build Hong Kong’s future, and I do mean it literally. The Government will spend at least HK$100 billion annually in capital works projects in the coming years. Together with the private sector, we forecast that the annual construction output in Hong Kong will total around HK$300 billion, generating over 300 000 employment opportunities. Our building and construction sector, and the wide-ranging industries and companies that drive it, can look forward to a future filled with opportunities. Judging by the Award entries, I’m confident that you will fill those opportunities with professionalism, care and passion,” said Mrs Carrie Lam, GBM, GBS, our Guest of Honour, Chief Executive of the HKSAR.

“It encourages us to receive an enthusiastic response this year,” said Ir Peter Mok, Chairman of the QBA 2020 Organizing Committee. “In a time of changes and uncertainties, the building industry safeguards the betterment of the society with unswerving commitment, heart and care. Their professionalism and pursuit of excellence has transformed the community and will bring profound benefits for generations to come. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I thank the jury panels for making the uneasy decision of choosing the best from the best.”

Mr Yu Tak Cheung, JP, Chairman of Jury Panel, said: “The competition of the Quality Building Award is fierce this year with a good number of outstanding nominations. The built environment of Hong Kong has long been known for its efficiency and rapid development. We are delighted to see that our building industry has continuously pushed beyond limits to excel themselves. This no doubt contributes significantly to Hong Kong’s proud status as Asia’s leading city.”

The next Quality Building Award will be presented in 2022 and led by the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers. Nomination will open by year end 2021.

New Research Seeks to Crack the Code of Coral Reef Heat Resilience

Paul G. Allen Family Foundation grants $7.2 million to support researchers working to help coral reefs survive the impacts of climate change

SEATTLE, US – News Direct – 2 June 2021 – The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation today announced a suite of new grants supporting the next phase of groundbreaking research to identify naturally heat tolerant corals, accelerate corals’ evolution processes, improve restoration methods, and ultimately slow the decline of coral reefs. Coral reefs sustain more than a quarter of all marine life and drive $2.7 trillion dollars in economic benefits such as tourism and food each year. Climate change, however, is rapidly accelerating their path toward extinction, threatening the safety, livelihood, and food security of almost one billion people across the globe.

“The rapid decline of coral reefs in the face of climate change makes finding adaptation techniques essential if corals are to survive,” said Jody Allen, co-founder and chair of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. “These grants build on the foundation’s longstanding commitment to coral reefs and support of applicable, scalable solutions to protect them. We are at a critical juncture with coral reefs facing extinction and the world must continue to invest in actionable research that ensures their preservation and long-term survival.”

Coral reefs are among the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on the planet, but are facing extinction at a more accelerated rate than any other ecosystem on Earth. As a result of climate change, half of the world’s coral reefs have died in the last 50 years, and without drastic intervention to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, all will die by the end of this century under the current climate warming trajectory.

By merging the latest advances in biomedical science, technology, and coral reef ecology, grantees will help corals survive while the world deals with the climate crisis. This suite of new research grants will provide field-deployable solutions to accelerate the natural evolution and identification of heat tolerant corals, and the scaling up of restoration strategies.

The following research teams are receiving immediate support for their work.

  1. Professor Christian Voolstra at Konstanz University of Germany and a global academic team from Old Dominion University, Institute for Systems Biology, Australian Institute of Marine Science, and Pennsylvania State University are searching for corals with natural resilience to climate change, or “super corals,” so they can be prioritized for conservation and restoration efforts and studied to understand what makes a coral reef more heat tolerant.
  2. Professor Madeleine van Oppen and team at the Australian Institute of Marine Science are adapting the single-cell algae within corals to withstand greater temperatures and speed their natural evolutionary process. This grant will help bring their work from the lab to the field.
  3. Dr. Crawford Drury and team at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawaii, use selective breeding of corals to pursue additional methods of speeding their natural evolutionary processes. They will determine if reproduction of known thermally tolerant corals can produce high-temperature-tolerant offspring.
  4. Professor Peter Harrison and team at Southern Cross University, Australia are focused on enhancing the survival rate of juvenile corals to restore reefs. They will use this funding to scale up the restoration of degraded coral reefs by clearing reefs of seaweed and settling the coral larvae both on the reef and in new settlement designs.

The foundation’s $7.2 million will support grantees to build on their successful initial research and enter into phase two, turning innovative ideas into scalable, sustainable solutions for coral reefs. This new suite of research grants is designed with a three-year timeline and focuses on applied solutions that can be deployed in the field by 2024.

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has long supported the work of those preserving and protecting coral reefs from the impacts of climate change. In 2014, the Paul G. Allen Ocean Challenge awarded $4.3 million to van Oppen and Dr. Ruth Gates at the University of Hawaii to support their research, considered radical at the time, to assist the evolution of coral reef thermotolerance. The foundation is also a founding partner of the Global Fund for Coral Reefs, a blended finance mechanism that uses public and philanthropic funding to catalyze private investment in coral reef conservation and restoration. In addition to the foundation’s support of corals, in 2017 Paul G. Allen and Jody Allen’s private investment and management firm Vulcan Inc. partnered with Arizona State University, Planet Labs, National Geographic, and University of Queensland to launch the Allen Coral Atlas. The first of its kind global coral reef mapping and monitoring system provides a comprehensive and unprecedented level of high-resolution, comparable, and up-to-date data about the world’s reefs, and will complete its mapping mission this fall.

70% Of SOC Teams Emotionally Overwhelmed by Security Alert Volume

Trend Micro study reveals the human cost of underpowered Security Operations Centers

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 2 June 2021 – Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global cybersecurity leader, today released results from a new study that reveals SOC and IT security teams are suffering from high levels of stress outside of the working day—with alert overload a prime culprit.

According to the study, which polled 2,303 IT security and SOC decision makers across companies of all sizes and verticals, 70% of respondents say their home lives are being emotionally impacted by their work managing IT threat alerts. This comes as the majority (51%) feel their team is being overwhelmed by the volume of alerts and 55% admit that they aren’t entirely confident in their ability to prioritize and respond to them. It’s no wonder therefore that teams are spending as much as 27% of their time dealing with false positives.

These finding are corroborated by a recent Forrester[1] study, which found that “security teams are heavily understaffed when it comes to incident response, even as they face more attacks. Security operations centers (SOCs) need a more-effective method of detection and response; thus, XDR takes a dramatically different approach to other tools on the market today.”

Outside of work, the high volumes of alerts leave many SOC managers unable to switch off or relax, and irritable with friends and family. Inside work, they cause individuals to turn off alerts (43% do so occasionally or frequently), walk away from their computer (43%), hope another team member will step in (50%), or ignore what is coming in entirely (40%).

“We’re used to cybersecurity being described in terms of people, process and technology”, said Dr. Victoria Baines, Cybersecurity Researcher and Author. “All too often, though, people are portrayed as a vulnerability rather than an asset, and technical defenses are prioritised over human resilience. It’s high time we renewed our investment in our human security assets. That means looking after our colleagues and teams, and ensuring they have tools that allow them to focus on what humans do best.”

With a staggering 74% of respondents already dealing with a breach or expecting one within the year, and the estimated average cost per breach USD$235,000, the consequences of such actions could be disastrous.

“SOC team members play a crucial role on the cyber frontline, managing and responding to threat alerts to keep their organizations safe from potentially catastrophic breaches. But as this research shows, that pressure sometimes comes at an enormous personal cost,” said Bharat Mistry, technical director for Trend Micro. “To avoid losing their best people to burnout, organizations must look to more sophisticated threat detection and response platforms that can intelligently correlate and prioritize alerts. This will not only improve overall protection but also enhance analyst productivity and job satisfaction levels.”

Trend Micro Vision One is the company’s answer to the struggles of SOC teams. Prioritized, correlated alerts using data from the entire IT environment help teams spend their time more wisely. Fewer alerts and stronger intelligence allow teams to regain balance in their work life and ease the emotional toll of security.

To find out more, please read the report.

Research methodology

The study is based on interviews with 2,303 IT security decision makers in 21 countries. This includes leaders who run SOC teams (85%) and those who manage SecOps from within their IT security team (15%). All respondents came from 250+ employee companies.

Singapore Companies Rapidly Bringing the Future of Work to Life: Aon Survey

  • 75% of surveyed organisations have made decisions on return-to-office timelines but only 25% of the companies have a return date.
  • 33% of companies expect returning workers to spend only two to three days per week in the office
  • Key issues shaping future-of-work definitions are addressing talent availability concerns, rethinking company cultures and digitalisation

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 2 June 2021 Aon plc (NYSE: AON), a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement and health solutions, has released the results of a new global human resources (HR) pulse survey focused on the steps companies are taking to bring the future of work to life.

Aon conducted its pulse survey from April 20-28, 2021, with a total of 1,451 human resources leaders and professionals responding globally. Complete study results, across multiple geographies and industries, are available here.

“The ongoing disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for an agile and resilient workforce,” said Peter Bentley, Global Chief Commercial Officer & Future of Work Leader for Human Capital solutions at Aon. “The focus on flexible working, while not new, has resulted in an unpacking of additional ‘future of work’ initiatives as highlighted by our survey findings. We see this trend continuing and driving positive momentum as companies build a more flexible, healthy workforce and invest in developing existing employee potential to drive innovation and performance.”

Companies plan for return to the office, but not everyone and not every day

In Singapore, 75% of surveyed organisations have made decisions on return-to-office timeline but only 25% of the companies have a return date.

However, companies do not expect everyone to return to the office. Forty-nine percent of surveyed organisations expect fewer than 75% of office workers to return onsite once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Additionally, flexible or hybrid working options are on the rise, with 33% of companies expecting returning workers to spend only two to three days per week in the office, and another 17% of companies opting to give employees a choice in terms of how much time they spend in the office.

Supporting vaccine adoption through incentives

As workers head back onsite, companies are taking a proactive and supportive approach to vaccine adoption; however, they are largely stopping short of mandates. Only 5% of surveyed organisations in Singapore currently plan to make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for employees where allowed by law, with another 9% of organisations actively considering this approach.

Meanwhile, 34% of organisations in Singapore are offering incentives to employees who receive COVID-19 vaccines, most often in the form of paid time-off to receive and recover from injections, and 46% of companies are actively educating employees on the benefits of getting vaccinated.

Future-of-work strategies and inclusion and diversity efforts are tightly linked

Focused on the future, almost three in four surveyed companies (70%) in Singapore have one or more teams or taskforces defining, managing and implementing the future of work. In addition, 80% of organisations say they now have a clear and consistent definition for what the future of work means for their business or expect to have a definition in the next six months.

The three most prevalent issues shaping future-of-work definitions in Singapore are addressing talent availability concerns, rethinking company cultures and digitalisation, cited by 93%, 86% and 80% of companies, respectively.

Looking more closely at inclusion and diversity efforts, 44% of surveyed companies in Singapore state HR teams are most responsible for leading programmes in this area. Additionally, 86% of firms have created or are planning to create inclusion and diversity metrics or goals to track progress, with diversity encompassing diversity of thought as well as employee demographics.

Efforts to rethink location-based compensation continue

With remote work on the rise, 69% of surveyed organisations in Singapore have adjusted, or are considering adjusting, geographic pay differentials as a result of the pandemic. Among companies actively adjusting pay based on shifting employee locations, 87% are re-examining pay rates using fresh market data and 39% are adding more granularity to the geographic zones they consider.

However, making adjustments of this nature isn’t without challenges. Top concerns for Singapore organisations include the difficulty of adopting and maintaining market-aligned pay rates across numerous locations (72%) and employment-related concerns and work policies (67%). In both cases, surveyed companied cited these issues as moderately, very or extremely challenging.
