BOH Shares its Deep ‘Malayan’ Roots and Living Legacy at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad through Khazanah’s Dana Warisan Initiative

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — BOH is honoured to have been invited to participate in Khazanah Nasional’s Dana Warisan initiative at the iconic Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, one of Malaysia’s most significant, historic and architecturally rich landmarks, renowned for its Moorish-inspired design.

The Dana Warisan initiative is part of the larger Warisan KL project which seeks to conserve and rejuvenate national heritage assets by reimagining them for adaptive reuse as inclusive, dynamic and living spaces. Launched by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim,  Warisan KL unites government agencies, GLCs, GLICs, private partners, and communities to transform heritage buildings into platforms that connect the past with the present, foster civic pride, engage communities – including visitors and tourists – and inspire future generations.

BOH’s presence at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad reflects a shared history that dates back to the formative years of Kuala Lumpur. The Russell family, founders of BOH, have been part of Malaya’s development since 1890, when John Russell, fondly known as ‘Jack’, arrived in the Straits Settlements as the Selangor Government Printer. Serving under the British Resident in Selangor, Jack played a key role in documenting Malaya’s early governance, infrastructure and social life, at a time when the Government Offices, today known as the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, stood at the heart of the nation’s administrative life.

From the early years, the family actively participated in Malaya’s progress, across printing, engineering, construction, mining, agriculture and commerce. This legacy continued on when J.A. Russell, one of Jack’s sons, founded BOH Plantations in 1929, pioneering Malaya’s first highland tea garden in the Cameron Highlands and laying the foundation for what would become Malaysia’s most beloved tea brand.

“Being part of the Warisan KL initiative at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad is deeply meaningful for BOH,” said Caroline Russell, Chairman of BOH.  “It allows us to celebrate not only our own legacy but also the broader narrative of Malaysia’s growth, one shaped by people, places and shared histories.”

“Our journey in Malaya began in 1890, at a time when this very building symbolised administration, progress and the shaping of a nation,” she added. “To share BOH’s story within a landmark that has witnessed Malaysia’s transformation is a powerful reminder that heritage is not static. It is an invaluable treasure we carry forward, nurture and pass on with purpose. We hope visitors will see how heritage lives on, not only in historic walls, but in ideas, values and everyday rituals, such as sharing a cup of tea,” she reminisced.

Rooted in nearly a century of Malaysian heritage, BOH’s history is one of enterprise, resilience and long-term stewardship – values that resonate strongly with Warisan KL’s commitment to sustainable nation-building.

As part of this initiative, BOH is presenting curated exhibits recounting its legacy from 1890 to the present, offering visitors an immersive journey through its heritage and participation in Malaysia’s development. Visitors can also take home a tangible part of this living legacy through BOH iconic teas, available for purchase at its onsite retail outlet.

“It is our hope that BOH’s story can inspire Malaysians to reconnect with the past while looking confidently toward the future,” added Caroline.

As BOH approaches a century of tea-making excellence, its participation in this rejuvenation project reaffirms a long-standing commitment to heritage, sustainability and community – brewing a legacy that continues to evolve with the nation. BOH…. Brewing for Tomorrow.

Team Alive-Rampage, Seawolf to return for next Rolex China Sea Race

HONG KONG, April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Asia’s premier offshore event, the 2026 Rolex China Sea Race, a 565nm Cat 1 race to the Philippines, concluded successfully after starting from Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour on 4 March. A prizegiving ceremony was held on 18 March to present awards to the top three boats in the PHS and IRC divisions, and to announce the two major prizes: Line Honours went to the R/P 66 Team Alive–Rampage, owned by Philip Turner and Noel Chan, while IRC Overall was claimed by William Liu’s Ker 42 Custom, Seawolf.

William Liu's Ker 42 Custom Seawolf claimed the IRC Overall title at the 2026 Rolex China Sea Race.
William Liu’s Ker 42 Custom Seawolf claimed the IRC Overall title at the 2026 Rolex China Sea Race.

The Australian entry Team Alive–Rampage claimed Line Honours with an elapsed time of 49h 55m 8s. Rampage’s owner, Noel Chan, accepted the award on behalf of the team. He said the victory was expected, and his only regret was that he could not sail in the race: “I happened to have business on race day, but my mind was with the race the whole time and I followed the situation closely.”

When asked whether the team had targeted any particular challenge for the race, Chan said the wind arrived later than expected, so they were unable to beat the single‑hull record of 47h 31m 8s set in 2016: “There was no wind approaching the finish — the wind arrived about five hours later than expected — otherwise it might have been possible to break the old record. Sailing is a combination of skill and luck.” He also praised the crew for their excellent performance and correct strategy, which helped them avoid many no‑wind areas.

Chan said the team is already considering a return in two years’ time. “There is a very good chance we will race with Alive again, and we might add a TP52 to compete as well, but it is too early to say for sure.” Chan, whose wife attended the prize‑giving ceremony in support of him, noted that his family has been highly supportive of his racing. “My wife is very supportive, and the family supports the sport. If time permits, I will definitely race in the next edition.” he added.  Chan also expressed confidence that the current record will one day be broken.

Chinese Mainland entry Seawolf won the IRC Overall on corrected time, finishing in 71h 43m 35s. This marks the first time a Chinese Mainland yacht has won the IRC Overall title in the race’s history. Seawolf‘s owner, William Liu, said perseverance was key to the victory: “Our team has a 20‑year history in racing and has competed in the Rolex China Sea Race for 12 years. We’ve finished second two or three times; in the previous edition we missed the win by only six minutes. This time we finally won. There are no shortcuts in yacht racing — persistence is the most important thing.”

Seawolf‘s skipper, Yan Yuye, said the crew encountered strong winds and equipment damage during the race, but the team’s accumulated experience helped minimise the impact of mistakes: “Over the years, we’ve reflected on failures again and again to reduce errors.”

Asked whether they would race again now that they had fulfilled their ambition by winning the IRC Overall title, Liu said: “Winning won’t stop us from racing, and losing won’t either. We will keep competing — that is the greatest meaning of the sport of sailing.”

ABOUT ROLEX

AN UNRIVALLED REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND EXPERTISE

Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacture. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Perpetual watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization. The word ‘Perpetual’ is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components. A fifth site, also in Switzerland, is under construction and is expected to open in 2029. Rolex carries out its own manufacturing operations, from casting the gold alloys to machining, crafting, assembling and finishing the movement, case, dial and bracelet. Laos Puts Youth at the Center of UXO Awareness Efforts

A group of students participating on UXO action activity during the ceremony supervised by UXO experts

Laos is increasing efforts to involve young people in tackling unexploded ordnance (UXO), placing youth at the center of awareness and long-term risk reduction.

A ceremony on 1 April in Vientiane marked the International Day for Mine Awareness, bringing together officials, development partners, and students from five secondary schools.

The event highlighted a growing push to engage the next generation in addressing UXO challenges.

Students took part in supervised demonstrations of survey and clearance work, alongside sessions on UXO history, international conventions, and ongoing risk education efforts.

Officials said early engagement helps build awareness and safer communities.

The event also launched a nationwide art campaign, inviting participants aged 9 to 35 to reflect on Laos’ UXO legacy. Submissions are open until 19 July, with scholarships worth LAK 10 million (USD 455) awarded to winners.

Laos will also host the Third Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions from 13 to 18 September in Vientiane, reinforcing its role in global mine action efforts.

Laos remains one of the most heavily affected countries by UXO, a legacy of heavy bombing during the Indochina War from 1964 to 1973.

Millions of tonnes of bombs were dropped, and many failed to explode, leaving dangerous remnants scattered across rural areas. Today, UXO continues to pose risks to communities, especially in farming areas where people rely on land for their livelihoods.

The United Nations designated 4 April as the International Day for Mine Awareness in 2005 to highlight these dangers and encourage global support for clearance efforts.

In Laos, the issue remains closely linked to development, as clearing contaminated land allows safer farming, infrastructure, and long-term economic growth.
