At G2E Asia 2026 on Tuesday, Grant Chum, chief executive officer and executive director of Sands China Ltd., delivers a keynote address to 200 industry leaders and tourism stakeholders from across the region. The keynote shed light on insights to Macao’s integrated tourism development and pathways to its citywide diversification.

Themed Evolving Together: Advancing Macao’s Diversification Through Integration, Innovation, and Inclusion, the keynote speech outlined how Sands China’s visionary integration, transformative innovation, and inclusive growth have collectively shaped a blueprint for Macao’s sustainable development.

Such a forward-looking blueprint traces back to the far-sighted vision of Sheldon G. Adelson, the late founder of Las Vegas Sands Corp. Under his leadership, the group’s first property in Macao, Sands® Macao, was launched in 2004; it was followed by the 2007 launch of The Venetian® Macao, the city’s first large-scale integrated resort that merges retail, entertainment, hospitality, and MICE facilities. Ever since, Sands China has laid the foundation for the Cotai Strip, ushering in a new era for Macao’s tourism industry.

To support Macao’s economic diversification, Sands China has continuously invested in a holistic focus on hospitality, MICE, entertainment, and retail. Its 14,000-seat Venetian Arena, constantly staging large-scale concerts and performances by international superstars, has played a key role in positioning Macao more prominently on the global stage.

The company also operates over 1.6 million square feet of MICE facilities, instrumental in drawing world-class MICE events and a large flow of business visitors to Macao, extending visitors’ stay, and further strengthening Macao’s status as a leading business tourism destination in Asia. In addition, Sands China owns the city’s largest retail offering, comprising nearly 780 world-renowned duty-free retail outlets, providing strong support for the development of Macao’s retail sector.

As the pioneer of the integrated resort model in Macao, Sands China has remained steadfast in fostering the city’s economic diversification for over 20 years and continues to hold strong confidence in its future development. With the leadership of the central and the Macao SAR governments, Macao’s long-term political stability under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework has positioned the city as a safe, resilient operating environment for long-term investment, sustained development, and high-quality growth. Macao further benefits from strong organic demand – driven by its proximity to a population of nearly 90 million in the Greater Bay Area and its connectivity to key global markets. Together with tourism infrastructure developed by Sands China and industry peers over years, the synergy that has formed enables Macao to continuously attract diverse groups of tourists and effectively capture visitor demand.

Furthermore, Macao’s supply advantage in having an unmatched critical mass of high-quality integrated resorts, together with government-backed infrastructure such as the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, have further enabled the scale and efficiency of Macao’s tourism ecosystem and sustained its competitiveness.

Looking ahead, Chum underscored the growing importance of the “Event Economy” as a key driver of the next phase of Macao’s diversification journey, with purposeful programming playing an increasingly strategic role in attracting international visitors and facilitating further economic diversification. The future focus for Sands China is on the curation of globally significant events to maximize impact and long-term value. Crucially, such events generate a broader spillover effect across the city’s economy, benefitting a wider scope of industries.

Flagship entertainment and sports events are also identified as powerful brand amplifiers for the city. In particular, The NBA China Games in October 2025 marked a significant milestone. It generated approximately 3 billion online impressions on social media platforms across the Chinese mainland and significantly enhanced Macao’s visibility within global sports and entertainment networks. Around the event, Sands China curated around 100 extended activities and initiatives, including NBA House, the Impact Week community event, fan engagement, and Macao’s first NBA flagship store, ensuring the impact extended beyond the arena into the wider community.

The significance of sustainable diversification lies not only in tourism benefits, but also in creating meaningful and lasting contributions to the local community. By extending the synergy from large-scale events, Sands China has endeavoured to promote community care, bolstering volunteer service, fostering the development of Macao’s arts and culture, empowering SMEs, and advancing community revitalization – ensuring tourism growth drives broader participation and shared benefits across society.

Sands China reaffirms its unwavering confidence in Macao’s future and pledges to continue investing in high-quality non-gaming projects, working closely with the government, industry and Macao community to further facilitate the city’s development as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure.

Student Agency in Action: Hong Kong Academy Redefines Environmental Stewardship Through Student-Led Earth Day and Yard Sale Initiatives

HONG KONG, May 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — In a world where environmental and social challenges are increasingly complex, the ability to translate personal values into community impact has become a vital part of a modern education. Hong Kong Academy (HKA) is proud to spotlight the recent achievements of its  Student Initiative Council, who successfully spearheaded the school’s 2026 Earth Day activities and the return of the HKA Yard Sale.

HKA Earth Day 2026 Highlights: Action for a Greener Future

The HKA Way: Empowering Student Voice
HKA’s 2026 Earth Day programme championed student agency, featuring initiatives like “Energy Vampire” hunts designed and led by students. This student-led approach shifts teachers into facilitator roles, allowing learners to prioritize their own sustainability questions.

The school’s diverse talent was showcased through three distinct lenses:

Surplus books supported literacy in Cambodia, the Philippines, and local prisons, while textiles were donated to Redress to combat fashion waste.

Building a Foundation for the Future
“Our goal is to provide a space where students realize that their ideas have weight, and we give them the support to act on their ideas.” says a school representative. “By proposing and leading these projects, students learn that their voice counts and protecting our world isn’t a one-day event—it’s a forever mindset which requires persistence and creative thinking.” Through these initiatives, HKA continues to celebrate the diverse talents of its community, proving that when students are given the lead, they don’t just learn about the world—they learn how to contribute to it.

FinVolution Launches 11th Global AI Competition: Teaching Voice AI When to Speak

SHANGHAI, May 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — FinVolution Group has officially launched the 2026 FinVolution Global Data Science Competition today. This year’s challenge focused on turn-taking modeling in conversations, with the aim of giving voice AI a sense of when to speak.

Voice interaction has reached the native-audio era, with AI now responding in real time. What it still lacks is something humans do by instinct: knowing when to take a turn, when to stay silent, and when a brief “mm-hm” is the right reply. Without it, even the fastest model talks over users or lets dialogue stall.

This year’s participants will be given thirty seconds of dual-channel dialogue as context,  to predict the speech events likely to occur in the next 800 milliseconds, equipping AI with the social intuition to read user intent and respond at the right moment.

The dataset behind the challenge is built from real dual-channel telephone conversations recorded across 35 regions of China, spanning a wide range of dialects and speaking styles. Audio comes paired with ASR transcripts and word-level timestamps, allowing participants to build pure-audio or multimodal systems.

“For more than a decade, this competition has been our way of connecting academic research with real-world application,” said Tiezheng Li, CEO of FinVolution Group. “Turn-taking is one of the open problems in voice interaction today. We hope what’s built here reaches far beyond research, letting millions of users experience more natural, more human conversation in everyday life.”

The 2026 challenge is supported by the China Computer Federation(CCF)  Technical Committee on Natural Language Processing as academic advisor, in collaboration with Fudan University’s Natural Language Processing Lab. It is also an official partner competition of the 15th CCF International Conference on Natural Language Processing and Chinese Computing(NLPCC 2026). Top-performing teams will earn a direct path to present at NLPCC 2026 alongside the global NLP research community.

Competition Timeline

The 2026 challenge offers a prize pool of RMB 308,000 (approximately USD 42,900) and will unfold in three stages:

Preliminary Round (May 13 – June 19): Participants train locally and submit their prediction results for real-time scoring by the end of June 16. The list of teams advancing to the semifinals will be announced on June 19.

Semifinals (June 20 – July 16): Semifinalists are required to submit Docker images for evaluation by the end of July 7. Finalists will be announced on July 16.

Final Round (July 16 – late July): Finalists will compete in person before a panel of judges, with the exact date to be announced separately.

Registration is now open through the official competition platform.

Over its eleven editions, the FinVolution Global Data Science Competition has drawn close to 10,000 participants from universities, research labs, and technology companies around the world. Past challenges have spanned deepfake detection, credit scoring, fraud detection, user behavior modeling, and dialect recognition. Partnerships with top AI conferences such as IJCAI (2024), CIKM (2025), and now NLPCC (2026) reflect its rising stature in the global AI ecosystem.

Attapeu to Restore 8,800 Hectares of Forest in 2026 Amid Rising Environmental Pressures

Attapeu has launched an ambitious plan to restore over 8,800 hectares of forest in 2026, aiming to increase forest coverage and address growing environmental challenges.

The initiative will include the restoration of 8,200 hectares of degraded land and the promotion of 630 hectares of new tree plantations. This restoration is part of a larger effort to combat the effects of climate change and environmental degradation, and it is set to align with the upcoming National Arbor Day on 1 June.

The provincial authorities have announced that they will prepare planting sites, seedlings, and restoration areas ahead of the national planting campaign. By 25 May, all planting sites must be identified, with land preparation and fertilizing to be completed by the end of May. In total, more than 250,000 saplings are planned for the year.

The restoration efforts will also include the establishment of 1,000 hectares of plantation areas and village-managed forests in three villages. The provinces are particularly focused on youth participation and climate change awareness, with public awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging both local communities and schools to get involved in the project.

Forest Fires and Rising Environmental Pressure

This major reforestation campaign comes in response to escalating environmental concerns in Laos, particularly the increasing frequency of forest fires and air pollution linked to land burning activities.

Recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment shows that Laos recorded over 16,000 fire hotspots in the first quarter of 2026 alone, largely due to slash-and-burn farming practices.

This has compounded the country’s environmental challenges, with a particularly destructive forest fire in Phou Phanang National Park that burned over 1,400 hectares in April.

The Attapeu reforestation initiative also aligns with Laos’ national forestry strategy, which aims to increase the country’s forest coverage to 70 percent by 2035. This ambitious goal is in response to the significant loss of Laos’ forests over the past two decades, primarily due to commercial farming, logging, and land conversion.

Laos has lost approximately 58 percent of its intact forest landscapes in the past 20 years, with agriculture and infrastructure development being the primary drivers of deforestation. Reforestation efforts are critical in mitigating the negative impacts of climate change and securing the future of Laos’ natural resources.

Looking Ahead

The Attapeu reforestation campaign also aligns with Laos’ broader environmental goals. As the initiative progresses, it will be closely monitored to track progress toward the 70 percent forest coverage target. Officials also noted that it is essential to maintain newly planted trees and restore degraded forest areas to ensure the long-term health of the country’s forests.

The Attapeu administration’s efforts are part of a nationwide drive to combat climate change, improve forest coverage, and address the environmental challenges facing Laos. By prioritizing forest restoration, Laos aims to protect its natural resources, improve air quality, and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

ABB is first in world to offer a magnet-free IE6 motor for hazardous areas

  • Boosting energy efficiency in hazardous areas is critical for operators seeking to reduce their operating costs while also meeting sustainability targets
  • Certification to ATEX and IECEx requirements enables IE6 technology to be deployed in hazardous areas
  • IE6 Hyper-Efficiency SynRM motor reduces energy losses by 60 percent over a standard IE3 induction motor, making it the ideal upgrade solution for pumps, fans and compressors

KZURICH, SWITZERLAND – Media OutReach Newswire – 13 May 2026 – ABB is the world’s first manufacturer to offer an IE6 Hyper‑Efficiency motor certified to ATEX and IECEx requirements for use in hazardous areas. The new IE6 Increased safety motor, based on ABB’s magnet- and rare earth- free synchronous reluctance (SynRM) technology, offers up to 60 percent lower energy losses than the IE3 induction motors commonly used in Zones 1 and 2. This enables operators to realize a major boost in energy efficiency and avoided carbon emissions in industries where gas, vapor or dust might be present, such as chemicals, marine, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals and food & beverage.

The IE6 SynRM Increased safety motor is certified for use with variable speed drives (VSDs) to offer accurate control and high efficiency throughout the whole speed range, even at partial loads. This makes it the ideal upgrade for standard IE3 induction motors in pumps, fans and compressors. Over a typical 20-year service life, the energy savings from switching just one motor up to IE6 would be €87,5201, resulting in an eight-month payback period with 157,540 kg CO2 avoided—equivalent to 37 gasoline powered passenger cars driven for a year.

“In its Energy Efficiency report 2025, the IEA highlights the pressing need to make sustainable technology available as an affordable choice. And that is central to ABB’s own Engineered to Outrun philosophy,” said Stefan Floeck, President IEC LV Motors, ABB. “With the world’s first IE6 Hyper‑Efficiency SynRM motor for hazardous areas, we now have the ideal solution for customers who must drive down their operating expenses while meeting stringent sustainability targets.”

The new IE6 SynRM Increased safety motor covers ratings from 110 kW, with IE5 versions available for up to 90 kW. As well as increased reliability and reduced maintenance, SynRM technology enables a more cost-effective installation. In Zone 1, cooler running can allow the use of an Increased safety SynRM motor where a Flameproof motor with a special enclosure would be the traditional choice. Furthermore, in Zone 2, the improved loadability of SynRM motors enables more power from the same size as an equivalent induction motor. This could enable a smaller, lower-cost motor to fulfil the same duty.

ABB’s IE6 and IE5 SynRM technology is part of the industry’s broadest portfolio of IEC LV motors for hazardous areas, with induction alternatives up to IE4 efficiency level. Whatever the technology, these motors combine robust construction, high energy efficiency, and reliable operation to deliver trusted performance and certified safety in the most demanding environments.

Siam Piwat redefines global retail with NEXTOPIA, a future prototype where sustainability is a transformative force for business, people, and the planet

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Media OutReach Newswire – 12 May 2026 – In a bold bid to reshape the future of retail, Siam Piwat Group has unveiled NEXTOPIA at its flagship Siam Paragon, the world’s first prototype for a global sustainability platform that turns eco-conscious living into an immersive, everyday experience.

1. NEXTOPIA.jpg

Chief Executive Officer Chadatip Chutrakul introduced the project during The Economist’s 5th annual Sustainability Week Asia, recently held in Bangkok, positioning NEXTOPIA as more than a response to necessity but as a genuine driver of business leadership and vision.

The vision for the future of retail is built on three interconnected pillars: co-creation with founders and partners, collaboration with tenants and communities, and customers. Together, they redefine retail as a platform shaped by shared purpose, creativity, and participation. This extends to redefining customer relationships through trust, inspiring customers to visit more often, spend more time, and deepen engagement within our ecosystem.

2. NEXTOPIA (ECOTOPIA).jpg

“Sustainability is no longer optional,” Chutrakul said. “We must accelerate and make a bold move. Real, lasting impact is never created alone. It requires co-creation across industries, united by purpose, in a place that captures the world’s attention and inspires change for the greater good.”

Launched in November 2025, the 15,000-square-meter attraction at Siam Paragon, a global landmark that draws more than 200,000 visitors daily, including a significant share of international tourists aims to move sustainability “beyond awareness into joyful and engaging experiences in everyday life,” she added.

Developed with more than 50 partners, NEXTOPIA operates under the theme “Co-creating Communities for a Better World.” It features infrastructure contributions from companies including B.Grimm, SCG, Indorama and Kasikornbank, incorporating solar energy, sustainable materials, advanced water systems, and cooling and clean air technologies.

4. NEXTOPIA.jpg

The project has achieved zero waste to landfill, cut energy consumption by 47%, reduced water use by 34% and lowered carbon emissions from construction materials by 59%. Within a year, water savings are projected to be equivalent to the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Over two years, decarbonization efforts will deliver the environmental benefit of creating a vast urban park.

NEXTOPIA is Thailand’s first multi-tenant retail building to earn EDGE Advanced certification for resource efficiency and a two-star Fitwel rating. It also received the Best in Building Health Award 2026 from Fitwel, achieving top scores for its design and quality-of-life features.

Tenants must adhere to some 50 sustainability criteria covering waste management and value chain practices, with many exceeding standard industry benchmarks. Siam Piwat developed the framework over three years to help partners adopt sustainable practices quickly while cutting costs and unlocking new value.

Interactive elements at NEXTOPIA invite visitors to participate directly, with kinetic floors and bicycles that generate electricity for redeemable rewards, alongside exhibits featuring Thailand’s largest collection of recycled art, created by artists from waste collected nationwide. ECOTOPIA, the country’s biggest eco-store, stocks more than 110,000 sustainable products, many recycled or upcycled, sourced from around 300 Thai communities and small businesses.

The project has also brought together more than 30 local communities and global organizations, including the United Nations, World Food Programme, UNDP Biofin and WWF, to exchange knowledge and ideas.

More than a shopping destination, NEXTOPIA functions as a living laboratory for experimenting and exchanging ideas that retail and real estate developers worldwide could adapt. It marks a strategic evolution for Siam Piwat, transforming the company from a premier retail developer into what it describes as “a global sustainability platform” that links businesses, people and innovation.

This shift aligns with intensifying global pressure on companies to meet their sustainability commitments under the Paris Agreement, as brands and consumers increasingly demand verifiable environmental action.

With NEXTOPIA, Siam Piwat is betting that the future of retail lies not just in selling goods, but in creating spaces where sustainability feels tangible, measurable and above all inspiring.

Setting a new benchmark for co-created, revolutionary retail, NEXTOPIA offers a scalable model that delivers both business value and meaningful impact – one that can be adopted globally.
