AI, innovation and culture help China’s gaming industry gain global appeal: China Daily editorial

BEIJING, Jan. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — China’s gaming industry has emerged as a major force on the global stage in recent years, built on a strong domestic market and driven by technological innovation, cultural integration and globalization.

China is already the world’s largest gaming market, with domestic sales surpassing 325 billion yuan ($46.8 billion) in 2024. By mid-2025, the number of domestic Chinese game users reached around 679 million, and overseas sales of self-developed games exceeded $9.5 billion, up 11.07 percent year-on-year.

A report by AppsFlyer, a mobile attribution and marketing analytics platform, highlighted that Chinese gaming companies accounted for 35 percent of global spending to attract new users, a 22 percent increase from the previous year. Creative output also expanded rapidly, with top advertisers producing 2,400 to 2,600 creative variations per quarter, up 25 to 30 percent year-on-year.

Beyond advertising, Chinese companies have significantly increased investment in research and development, placing themselves at the forefront of global technological innovation. The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence in gaming, e-commerce, social media and marketing reflects China’s broader progress in cutting-edge technologies, enabling developers to create unique gaming experiences that resonate globally.

A key factor in the industry’s success is the integration of Chinese culture into games. Titles such as Honor of Kings and Black Myth: Wukong leverage Chinese mythology and cultural elements, creating experiences that appeal to diverse audiences while promoting cross-cultural understanding. Chinese games are now available in over 100 countries and regions, demonstrating the global appeal of culturally rich digital entertainment. AI has also played a role in tapping into China’s cultural resources and talent, enhancing creative output and storytelling.

The gaming industry’s growth supports China’s broader economic goals by contributing to digital trade and creating employment opportunities. The development of a comprehensive industry chain, supported by favorable policies that emphasize the importance of cultural industries and the need to build a strong public cultural service system, promotes the sector’s sustainable growth.

Games have become a new global language, facilitating cultural exchange and understanding. The progress of China’s gaming industry significantly enhances the country’s soft power. As digital cultural carriers, Chinese games offer interactive experiences that engage players as interpreters of different cultures. By reaching a broader audience, these games contribute to a greater appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage and values.

Tabimori, Inc. Launches Authentic Omakase Sushi Course for Vegetarians and Vegans — A Cultural Culinary Innovation for Global Travelers

TOKYO, Jan. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Tabimori, Inc. has introduced a fully vegetarian omakase option—prepared without any seafood—to its popular sushi interpreting service, “sushiuniversity®,” which has been widely used by international travelers.

Daikon sprouts, treated with the same kobujime technique used for seafood sushi, develop a richer umami profile.
Daikon sprouts, treated with the same kobujime technique used for seafood sushi, develop a richer umami profile.

Background of the omakase sushi course for vegetarians and vegans

It’s estimated that about 1.5 billion people worldwide follow a vegetarian or plant-based diet, accounting for roughly 18% of the global population. While Japan has seen a surge in international tourism in recent years, vegetarian and vegan visitors often face limited opportunities to enjoy one of the country’s most iconic culinary traditions—sushi.

Omakase sushi offers an efficient and flexible model for ingredient sourcing and aligns well with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At Sushi University, we see it as part of our mission to communicate in advance with vegetarian and vegan guests about the ingredients used, ensuring an inclusive and thoughtful dining experience.

Some participants completely avoid fish, while others simply dislike raw seafood. With our growing experience in accommodating such needs, we believe the time is right to offer an authentic, plant-based sushi omakase experience—one that stays true to the spirit of Japanese culinary artistry and hospitality.

Cultural and culinary principles behind omakase sushi for vegetarians and vegans

Rooted in centuries of culinary tradition, Japanese cuisine offers principles that make omakase sushi for vegetarians and vegans truly authentic.

The traditional concepts of “Five Tastes” (Gomi), “Five Colors” (Goshiki), and “Five Techniques” (Goho)—core elements of washoku—have long guided harmony in flavor, appearance, and nutrition. These ideas, developed to balance taste, presentation, and sensory experience, form the heart of Japanese culinary philosophy.

Historically, Edomae sushi chefs used techniques such as salting, simmering, steaming, marinating, and aging to enhance umami and preserve seafood before refrigeration. Today, these same techniques are applied to vegetables: salting reduces bitterness, gentle heating enhances natural sweetness, marinating in kombu adds depth, and fermentation develops complex flavors. In this way, vegetarian and vegan omakase become more than a fish substitute—they are a refined, nuanced expression of plant-based ingredients.

The three core principles further enrich the experience:

     – Five Tastes (Gomi: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami): Ingredients naturally provide a wide range of subtle flavors.
     – Five Colors (Goshiki: white, yellow, red, green, black): Japan’s agricultural variety creates visual appeal and balanced nutrition.
     – Five Techniques (Goho: raw, simmered, grilled, fried, steamed): Varied preparations enhance texture and aroma.

Together, these principles reflect Japan’s long-held wisdom—taste harmony, visual beauty, and nutritional balance—while aligning with the values of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. Omakase sushi for vegetarians and vegans is thus not just an alternative to traditional sushi but a continuation of Japan’s culinary aesthetics, reinterpreted for modern guests.

Features of the omakase sushi course for vegetarians and vegans

The omakase sushi course for vegetarians and vegans is crafted from the finest ingredients selected by skilled sushi chefs, while guests enjoy watching them work up close at the counter.

Additionally, the joy of directly communicating with the chef to create a custom menu on the spot, which was once unavailable to vegetarians and vegans, is now accessible, allowing all guests to fully enjoy traditional sushi during their visit to Japan.

Furthermore, as a farming nation, Japan has developed a rich culinary culture over centuries, refining techniques to prepare grains and vegetables in delicious ways. This experience lets guests savor the abundant flavors and nutritional benefits of seasonal produce, with each visit offering the discovery of ingredients unique to the time of year.

Interpreting services are combined with hotel pick-up to create various courses that fit tourists’ budgets.

Sushi University offers an omakase sushi course for vegetarians and vegans (¥16,000) and five other courses for general travelers (¥19,000–¥69,000), all of which include meals and interpreting services.

Guests who wish to experience this omakase sushi for vegetarians and vegans can make a reservation in advance via our online booking system. We recommend booking early, as seats are limited and the course is highly popular among international visitors.

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) under the theme of “Co-creating New Horizons Amid an Evolving Landscape”, the AFF welcomed more than 150 distinguished speakers from around the world.

A new Global Business Summit was held throughout day-two of the AFF yesterday, to further integrate finance with key industries and drive innovation and economic development.

Co-organised by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau of the HKSAR Government, the HKTDC, and the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises, the summit explored how finance empowers businesses. In his opening remarks at the summit, Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, highlighted trade, finance and innovation and technology as the three principal drivers of future economic growth.

“Hong Kong is not just a platform that connects capital, market, projects, talent and opportunity. Hong Kong is willing to be a strategic partner to help you grow, scale up and go global,” Mr Chan said.

On building a more vibrant tech ecosystem, Mr Chan said the HKSAR Government is determined to attract the world’s leading frontier-technology enterprises to establish a presence in Hong Kong.

“We welcome technology and industrial enterprises to establish a presence in the Northern Metropolis. Where justified, we are prepared to tailor incentive packages, which may include land grants, premium concessions, tax incentives and other facilitation measures. Everything is negotiable,” he said.

Prof Frederick Ma, Chairman of the HKTDC, in his welcome remarks at the summit, said: “In these unpredictable times, working together on shared goals adds to the agility and resilience of our economies, our industries and businesses, and our communities. A series of plenary sessions held during the summit included the Business Plenary I – Chinese Mainland Enterprises Going Global, and Business Plenary II – Strategic Collaboration for Shared Growth, focusing on the latest opportunities in global market expansion and inbound foreign investment.

The Global Business Summit also featured a series of discussion sessions covering high‑growth, high‑value sectors, including biomedicine and healthcare, green energy, new consumer trends, artificial intelligence and robotics.

Speakers included representatives of prominent enterprises in the respective fields, such as Banking Circle, Infineon AG, Investcorp, JP Morgan, Revolut, Triton Partners, Amgen, Merck, DexForce Technology, JD.com, Pictet Group, AI² Robotics, Galbot and Tencent.

Paul Polman, a business leader, investor and philanthropist who is dedicated to advocating for systemic change, climate action, and social equality, delivered the Keynote Luncheon speech (January 27). Meanwhile, this year’s AFF Deal-making session, co-organised by the HKTDC and the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, attracted over 280 investors and over 600 investment projects, resulting in more than 800 one-on-one meetings that successfully connected global capital with investment opportunities.

The AFF also marked the start of this year’s International Financial Week, featuring14 industry events that span a wide range of globally watched financial and business topics, including ASEAN opportunities, digital finance, green finance, family offices, private equity and alternative investments. Together, these events underscore Hong Kong’s unique role as the region’s most comprehensive and diversified international financial centre.

From race to road: historically significant Ferrari collection offered for sale

  • ‘Scuderia ’89 – The Pursuit for Paddle’ is a five-car collection that charts the development of the ground-breaking paddle-shift transmission
  • Ferrari 639 F1 factory prototype and 640 F1 driven by Gerhard Berger in the ’89 World Championship signalled a technological leap forward for Ferrari in F1
  • F40, F50 and F355 are among the most celebrated of Ferrari road cars
  • Collection estimated to be worth in excess of £20 million

ASHFORD, England, Jan. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A unique collection of ultra rare and historically significant Ferrari F1 race and road cars has been placed on sale, offering collectors the chance to own five vehicles that together mark a significant milestone in the technological evolution of the fabled Italian carmaker.

‘Scuderia ’89 Collection’
‘Scuderia ’89 Collection’

Presented by Furlonger, one of the UK’s leading specialists of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Bugattis, and in collaboration with their European partner Egon Zweimüller, the ‘Scuderia ’89 – The Pursuit for Paddle’ collection charts the development of the semi-automatic, or ‘paddle-shift’ transmission, from racing prototype and F1 pioneer to some of the most iconic supercars to ever leave Maranello.

The collection comprises the 1988 Ferrari 639 F1, a factory prototype used for testing the first semi-automatic paddle-shift transmission, and the 1989 Ferrari 640 F1, the first F1 car to feature the new gearbox and driven by Gerhard Berger during the 1989 season. A pristine 1989 Ferrari F40 is an iconic model that is widely regarded as the archetypal supercar never bettered for visceral thrills, while a 1996 Ferrari F50 features the 4.7-litre V12 engine that could trace its roots to the very unit from the 639 and 640 F1 cars. The final car in the collection, a 1998 Ferrari 355 Spider, is a treasured example of the first ever road car to feature a paddle-shift transmission, and a standard-bearer for F1-derived technology making the transition to high-performance road cars.

Simon Furlonger, Founder and Managing Director at Furlonger Specialist Cars, said: “We’ve assembled some of the most iconic and significant race and road cars in Ferrari’s history. These models define the dawn of a new era, when Ferrari harnessed its Formula 1 know-how for its road cars like never before. And of course, the 639 and 640 laid the foundations for the dominant Schumacher years that would follow in the early 2000s.”

1988 Ferrari 639 F1 (Chassis #106)

The only Tipo 639 in private hands and the second of two factory prototypes, Chassis #106 was developed to test Ferrari’s all-new Tipo 035 3.5-litre V12 engine. More significantly, the 639 was the first F1 car to feature the iconic ‘paddle shifters’ that are now commonplace among modern race and road cars. This vehicle was retained by the Ferrari factory from 1988 until April 1999, at which point it entered private ownership. The car has since benefitted from diligent care, with extensive works carried out by Ferrari Classiche, and remains fully driveable, with recent outings at Goodwood and Silverstone.

1989 Ferrari 640 F1 (Chassis #110)

Driven by Gerhard Berger during the 1989 season in the Canadian, German, British, Mexican and American Grand Prix, this was the first Formula 1 car to use a paddle-shift transmission in the World Championship. Following its retirement from racing, Chassis #110 was initially employed as a static display vehicle before being returned for complete restoration, during which time it was awarded Ferrari Classiche certification. In more recent times, Chassis #110 has been reunited with Berger for display laps at the 2024 Goodwood Members Meeting, and was awarded the prestigious Chairman’s Trophy at the 2025 Pebble Beach Concours.

1989 Ferrari F40

This example of Ferrari’s seminal 1980’s supercar is the most successful racing F40 in the UK, being one of 30 examples in period. Now back to its original factory specification and finished in Rosso Corsa, this F40 has covered just 24,000 kilometers from new. It presents as both a superb road example or an opportunity to restore it back to its in-period race specification, making it eligible for events such as Historic Le Mans or 6 hours of Spa.

1996 Ferrari F50

One of just 25 UK-supplied cars, this Ferrari F50 is highly original, finished in Rosso Corsa with just 14,000 miles on the clock. The car features its ‘original weave’ and comes complete with an extensive list of accessories including both roofs, travel case and tool kit.

1998 Ferrari F355 Spider

One of 139 UK supplied examples, this Rosso Corsa-finished F355 Spider has covered only 5,500 miles from new. It comes with a complete set of books and tools and benefits from exceptional provenance.

The vehicles in the ‘Scuderia ’89’ Collection are only available to purchase as a group, and are estimated to be worth in excess of £20 million. Interested parties are recommended to contact Furlonger or Zweimüller for viewings and further information: www.simonfurlonger.co.uk

This year’s winners were selected by an international jury composed of twelve experts from the fields of retail, industry, market research, toy safety and sustainability. The members evaluated the submitted innovations according to the criteria of play fun, safety, originality, potential for retail success, comprehensibility of the product concept as well as workmanship and quality.

Baby & Infant Category (0-3 years)
My First Tonies, Tonies

The soft, easy-to-grasp figures from My First Tonies introduce children from the age of one to wonderful sound worlds. By listening to short stories, toddlers can jump from branch to branch with monkeys. The Farm Box also delights young listeners while helping expand their vocabulary in a playful way. “A combination of age-appropriate storytelling and sensory stimulation,” enthuses the jury.

PreSchool Category (3-6 years)
Der Berg ruft, Auzou jeux/Hutter Trade

The engaging game, Der Berg ruft, introduces children up to six years old to the trendy sport of climbing. Two climbing teams compete on a vertical wall. Clues and logic tasks are integrated into the box’s design. The multi-step gameplay challenges logic, and spatial thinking. “A particularly successful combination of puzzle and riddle,” according to the jury.

Startup Category
Beaver Edu Construction Kit, Beaver Edu SAL

With the Beaver Edu Construction Kit, children become little tinkerers. Using thin real wood sticks and plug-in joints, they can create either the 22 suggested designs or their own constructions. With the patented cutting tool, children can cut their sticks to size without risk of injury. The jury emphasises “the combination of technical thinking and crafting.”

Sustainability Category
Arches, Waytoplay Toys

Arches stands out for its simple, curved shapes that allow children to build bridges, hills, or imaginative figures. The innovative click system holds the pieces firmly together, yet they can be easily taken apart. “Made from recycled plastic in Europe Arches combines sustainability with playfulness. Its clever geometry and high-quality manufacturing offer great potential and stimulate creativity,” the jury concludes.
