Search Suspended for Two Missing Villagers in Xaysomboun Cave

Xaysomboun Cave Rescue Suspended. (Photo: MTK Command & Control Center)

Rescue teams have suspended operations inside a semi-flooded cave in Xaysomboun after part of the entrance showed signs of collapse, raising serious safety concerns. Two villagers remain missing after flash floods trapped seven men inside the cave on 20 May.

Teams successfully rescued five of the men by 30 May, guided through submerged passages and aided by water pumping operations. The remaining two villagers entered the cave separately and have not been located despite intensive searches. Authorities and international specialists continued managing water flow and monitoring the surrounding terrain to reduce risk and improve conditions for any potential rescue for over 10 days.

The mission faced extreme challenges, including narrow passages, low oxygen levels, rising water, and unstable rock formations. Rescue crews worked under difficult conditions, with vertical clearances reduced to around 30 centimeters in flooded sections on 5 June.

Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand, including foreign divers who took part in Thailand’s 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue, spent days pumping water from the flooded cave and delivering food, medicine and supplies to the five villagers found alive on 29 May.

Efforts were repeatedly hampered by heavy rain, rising water levels and unstable conditions inside the cave. The five men were eventually rescued, but efforts to locate the remaining two villagers continued for another week before being suspended.

Global Rise in Delayed Childbearing and Infertility Drives Demand for Cross-Border Fertility Care

Asian Case Studies Highlight How Regulation, Cost, and Access Are Shaping International Family Choices

TAIPEI, June 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Delayed marriage, postponed childbearing, and infertility continue to draw global attention as more individuals and couples seek reproductive care beyond their home countries. As the average age of parenthood rises, differences in regulations, treatment costs, and access across markets have made cross-border fertility care a highly specialized segment of the international medical landscape.

According to data from more than 2,300 cross-border patient families treated at TFC Taipei Fertility Center, patients aged 35 to 40 represent the largest group, while those over 40 account for nearly 30%, underscoring advanced maternal age and delayed parenthood as major drivers of fertility travel.

For couples facing fertility challenges, selecting a treatment destination involves more than success rates. Clinical experience, laboratory quality, regulatory conditions, pricing transparency, language support, treatment scheduling, and follow-up care all play a role in decision-making.

Taiwan has emerged as a preferred destination for fertility patients from Asia, Europe, and North America, supported by a mature regulatory framework, extensive clinical expertise, high medical standards, and comparatively affordable costs. As a result, the number of international patients seeking fertility care in Taiwan continues to increase each year.

Since its founding in 2020, TFC has supported families from five continents and more than 50 countries and regions. IVF remains the most common treatment, followed by egg freezing, intrauterine insemination, and egg donation. Patients from Japan and France are often affected by domestic regulatory restrictions and advanced maternal age, while patients from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Macau often value cost-effectiveness and efficient treatment planning. Patients from the U.S., U.K., and South Korea frequently seek care for repeated implantation failure or diminished ovarian reserve.

Dr. Chii-Ruey Tzeng, founder of Taipei Fertility Center, said Taiwan’s reproductive medicine expertise, combined with support that helps international patients overcome language and system barriers, enables comprehensive evaluation, personalized treatment, and ongoing follow-up within a limited stay.

By integrating AI-based assessment with precision medicine, TFC has established a one-stop patient management model that includes remote consultation, treatment planning, multilingual communication, and post-treatment follow-up.

Ractigen Therapeutics Announces ADA 2026 Late-Breaking Presentation Highlighting saRNA as a New Frontier in Obesity Control

Breakthrough preclinical data demonstrate that LiCO-saUcp1 effectively turns white fat into calorie-burning brown fat, driving massive fat loss while fully preserving lean muscle mass and preventing post-treatment weight rebound.

NEW ORLEANS, June 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Ractigen Therapeutics, a pioneering clinical-stage biotechnology company developing innovative small activating RNA (saRNA) therapeutics, today announced that a late-breaking abstract on LiCO-saUcp1, its first-in-class saRNA candidate for obesity, has been accepted for poster presentation at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 86th Scientific Sessions, being held June 5–8, 2026, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

While current incretin therapies drive significant weight loss, they are increasingly plagued by the loss of lean muscle mass and rapid weight rebound upon discontinuation. Data to be presented at ADA demonstrate that LiCO-saUcp1 directly solves this industry-wide challenge. Utilizing the company’s proprietary Lipid-Conjugated Oligonucleotide (LiCO™) delivery platform, the therapy uses saRNA to target and upregulate the Ucp1 gene—a powerful driver of metabolic thermogenesis that has historically been considered “undruggable” by conventional pharmaceuticals.

“The obesity market is urgently looking for the ‘next generation’ of therapeutics that go beyond simply suppressing appetite,” said Long-Cheng Li, MD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ractigen Therapeutics. “saRNA opens an entirely new frontier in obesity control. By activating the body’s own thermogenic switch, we are changing the fundamental composition of weight loss. Our data show we can deliver profound fat reduction while protecting a patient’s muscle mass and reprogramming their metabolism to prevent the dreaded post-treatment rebound. This is the definition of high-quality weight loss.”

Key Highlights from the ADA Late-Breaking Presentation:

  • True “High-Quality” Weight Loss: In diet-induced obesity (DIO) models, LiCO-saUcp1 slashed fat mass by 45% while completely preserving lean muscle mass. In a direct comparison, standard-of-care semaglutide caused a detrimental 19% loss in lean mass.
  • Elimination of the Rebound Effect: Animals treated with LiCO-saUcp1 maintained their body weight and sustained a 46% fat mass loss for two full months after the drug was withdrawn, sharply contrasting with the rapid weight regain seen upon semaglutide withdrawal.
  • Best-in-Class Synergy: When combined with semaglutide, LiCO-saUcp1 synergistically drove a remarkable 69% reduction in fat mass (compared to 47% with semaglutide alone), without worsening the muscle depletion typically caused by GLP-1s.
  • Significant Liver Health Benefits: The therapy dose-dependently reduced liver triglycerides by up to 79%, demonstrating deep resolution of hepatic steatosis (fatty liver).

By proving that RNA activation can safely unlock Ucp1-driven thermogenesis, Ractigen Therapeutics is establishing a highly differentiated therapeutic mechanism that can act as a standalone treatment or as the ideal combination partner for existing incretin therapies.

The abstract is available online via the journal Diabetes® website.

Presentation Details at ADA 2026:

  • Title: Activating the Adipose Thermogenic Switch: A First-in-Class Ucp1 saRNA Drives Durable, High-Quality Weight Loss in Diet-Induced Obese Mice
  • Poster Number: 3066-LB
  • Presenter: Moorim Kang, PhD, Chief Technology Officer
  • Date/Time: Sunday, June 7, 2026, 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
  • Location: Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, LA
