Accessing healthcare is a hassle, Asia’s patients reveal: Prudential commissioned study

Complicated access to healthcare and a lack of guidance are keeping patients from receiving the care they need, when they need it

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 17 September 2025 – Patients in Asia want minimal disruption to their daily life when seeking medical care. This is according to research from Economist Impact commissioned by Prudential plc (“Prudential”). “Patient voices: experiences of healthcare access in Asia”, examines how people in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore access and experience healthcare services.

The study conducted between April-May 2025 draws on a survey of more than 4,200 patients and interviews with leading experts. The report reveals that thousands of people in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore believe getting medical care is a hassle, with more than eight in 10 people admitting they delay seeking care.

Asian patients highlight three main “pain points”:

  • Getting medical help is confusing: 55 per cent of respondents say they don’t know where to access care when they have health concerns. They report difficulties with booking appointments, long wait times, and complex payment processes.
  • Costs are high and unclear: One-third say the cost of healthcare is often higher than they expected. Nearly five in 10 turn to social safety nets such as family, charities, loans, or crowdfunding. For the 80% of respondents who report they have delayed getting care, the fear of becoming a financial or care burden on loved ones was the most frequently cited reason for the delay, mentioned by 22 per cent.
  • Patients aren’t getting the information they need: 55 per cent of patients say they don’t have the right information to make decisions about their medical treatment, with almost 40 per cent saying they use digital tools including artificial intelligence (AI) for treatment guidance after initial diagnosis.

Arjan Toor, CEO, Health at Prudential plc, says, “Asia’s patients want healthcare systems that work for them – that feel simple and easy to access, and capable of providing timely care. At Prudential, we believe this is where we can make the biggest difference to our customers’ peace of mind; by being there for them the moment they become a patient, and by guiding them at every step of their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. This means working closely with our healthcare partners to ensure patients feel understood and supported, while also doing our part to make the costs of healthcare clear and predictable. By making healthcare worry-free and hassle-free for people across Asia, we can help patients focus on what matters – getting better.”

Patients need clearer help to find the right care
Patients say the number one factor that brings them peace of mind when seeking care is minimal disruption to daily life. Yet nearly 60 per cent find visiting a general practitioner (GP) inconvenient. They report that it is hard to get an appointment, and they find billing and insurance confusing.

Patients delay care because of unexpected costs and financial risk taken on by families
Asia’s patients say the second most important factor for peace of mind is knowing they will be able to pay for their care. Yet many are caught off guard by hidden or unexpected charges, for example for specialist consultations, administrative fees or medication. According to the survey, such unexpected costs are among the top five barriers to accessing care.

Formal payment mechanisms, such as government-subsidised care or public health insurance, are commonly used in Hong Kong and Singapore, while in Malaysia and Indonesia, many patients resort to alternative sources, such as loans and crowdfunding, to cover their bills. Others may delay care because they are worried about losing earnings or becoming a financial burden on their families. In Indonesia, for example, 93 per cent of patients reported delaying care.

Patients increasingly trust digital sources to guide treatment decisions after diagnosis
Following a diagnosis, almost 40 per cent of patients turn to digital sources, such as AI, when making decisions about their care. This reflects patients’ desire to fill gaps in their knowledge and highlights a crucial need for trustworthy online resources.

Shaping healthcare around what patients need
Improving access to healthcare will require providers, insurers, governments, technology innovators and public sectors to work together. The report outlines that creating more transparent pricing, clearer processes, and increased digital access to information will make accessing care easier and more personal so that patients feel supported every step of the way.Hashtag: #Prudential

Bybit Signs MOU with Da Nang People’s Committee to Advance Vietnam’s Digital Asset Future

DUBAI, UAE, Sept. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Bybit, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the People’s Committee of Da Nang City, the Abu Dhabi Blockchain Center (ADBC), and Verichains Network Security Company Limited. This milestone underscores Bybit’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s digital asset ecosystem and deepening long-term cooperation in building Da Nang into a hub for international finance and innovation.

Da Nang, one of Vietnam’s largest cities and a major economic center, has been approved to deploy a blockchain sandbox — making it a natural location for the country to pilot progressive policies and attract international partnerships in digital assets and blockchain technology. Under the MOU, the partners will jointly support the city’s vision to establish an International Financial Center (IFC) through three core pillars:

  • Digital asset liquidity to connect Da Nang with global financial markets.
  • Ecosystem connectivity to link Vietnam with leading international finance hubs.
  • Infrastructure security to ensure a resilient, risk-controlled environment for blockchain innovation.

The partnership is key to translating national strategies into local implementation, ensuring that the IFC model is both policy-flexible and risk-controlled – minimizing exposure to threats targeting digital asset ecosystems.

The MOU underscores mutual commitments. Da Nang will facilitate administrative procedures for the partners to invest, open offices, and integrate into the IFC. In turn, Bybit and its partners will offer policy consultation on digital assets and blockchain technology, share international best practices, and support Da Nang in building a modern regulatory framework.

Helen Liu, Co-CEO of Bybit, said:

Vietnam is an inspiring example of a nation embracing digital transformation, and we are honored to contribute to its journey. Bybit is committed to sharing our global expertise in blockchain and digital asset innovation to support Da Nang’s vision of becoming an International Financial Center. This partnership reflects our belief in building sustainable ecosystems hand in hand with governments, institutions, and trusted partners.”

This collaboration builds on Bybit’s earlier engagement in Vietnam. In April 2025, Bybit Co-Founder and CEO Ben Zhou met with H.E. Nguyen Van Thang, Minister of Finance of Vietnam, at the Ministry of Finance headquarters in Hanoi. During the meeting, Bybit expressed strong support for Vietnam’s regulatory sandbox initiative and its vision to establish a safe, transparent, and innovation-friendly digital asset ecosystem. Discussions focused on the Government’s plan to launch a pilot sandbox mechanism to test the issuance and trading of crypto assets in a controlled environment, with robust safeguards such as Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols to protect investors and strengthen financial security.

Today’s MOU marks a natural continuation of these efforts, reaffirming Bybit’s role as a long-term partner in Vietnam’s digital transformation journey.

China’s Exporter Adapts to New Economic Realities as Canton Fair Highlights Shift

GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The 137th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) wrapped up in May 2025 with figures that underscore a pivotal shift in global trade. When buyer attendance from Europe and the United States grew 3.4%, emerging markets participation continued to rise. Countries along the Belt and Road Initiative sent 187,450 buyers, representing a 17.4% increase. Strong momentum was also seen from BRICS nations, which brought 72,417 buyers, a surge of 24.1%. Meanwhile, buyer attendance from RCEP member states reached 64,808, marking a 6.9% rise.

This trend reflects a broader rebalancing in the global economy. Amid persistent tariff pressures from the U.S. and mounting trade uncertainties, emerging markets are expanding their influence in global commerce and industry. Chinese companies are adapting quickly, moving beyond traditional markets and strengthening ties with developing economies. In the first half of 2025, China witnessed growing trade volume with over 190 countries and regions. 61 partners, up five year-on-year, had trade volume exceeding 50 billion yuan with China. China’s import and export with Belt and Road countries rose 4.7%.

Moreover, Chinese technology-intensive and high-value products have won broader recognition in developed and emerging markets alike. At the 137th Canton Fair, a Rwandan buyer, facing Africa’s digital shift, sealed a deal for LED/LCD displays to introduce smart solutions locally. A Pakistani buyer, noting the soaring demand for energy-saving appliances in his country, called the fair his top source for cost-effective, quality Chinese goods. These evolving demands are prompting Chinese companies to roll out new technologies, premium products, and innovative solutions tailored to emerging markets.

Leveraging its unmatched product portfolio and vast network of global buyers, the Canton Fair not only helps ease market entry barriers through its comprehensive offline supply chain connections but also opens new avenues for cross-border investment with its growing digital trade infrastructure. The Fair has connected Chinese exporters with new demand through thematic exhibitions, business matchmaking, and trade promotion programs. Additionally, its year-round online platform further enables suppliers and global buyers to interact seamlessly across time zones and geographies.

Looking ahead, the 138th Canton Fair, set to open in October, is expected to build on this momentum. As emerging markets continue to rise, the Fair is poised to play an even greater role in advancing trade cooperation and fostering mutual benefit in an evolving global economy.

Thai Authorities Arrest Lao National, Seize Over 2,200 Rounds of Guns

On 10 September, Thai authorities arrested Lao nationals, one case for smuggling 2,200 rounds of ammunition in Mukdahan province, Thailand. (Photo credit: MGR Online)

On 15 September, they arrested three Lao nationals in Khon Kaen for working illegally on tourist visas during a nationwide crackdown.

In the first case, Kalasin provincial police arrested Wichai Jaichuang, 24, a resident of Khon Kaen Province, who was wanted under a Criminal Court warrant for his role in cybercrime involving the use of bank accounts and phones.

During interrogation, Wichai revealed contacts with Lao nationals to procure around 2,000 rounds of 7.62 mm AK-47 ammunition in Mukdahan Province. Acting on this information, Kalasin authorities coordinated with Mukdahan police and staged a sting operation.

There, officers intercepted Sakhone Xaiyamoungkhoun, 21, of Savannakhet Province, Laos, who was carrying a sack. He attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.

A search revealed 2,214 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition. Sakhone confessed that the ammunition had been supplied by a Lao man known as “Noy” and that he was tasked with delivering it to a buyer for THB 9,000 (approximately USD 283).

Authorities charged Sakhone with illegal possession of military ammunition and handed him, along with the seized evidence, over to Mukdahan investigators for legal proceedings.

On 15 September, in a separate operation in neighboring Khon Kaen Province, immigration police arrested three Lao nationals for working illegally on tourist visas.

The individuals were identified as Khongma, 30; Sisoumung, 31; and Maithai, 21. All three remain legally permitted to stay in Thailand but were found to be employed without work permits.
