deTour 2021 details “Use(fu)less” design festival
A simultaneous showcase of virtual and physical exhibitions in celebration of the annual event
HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 6 December 2021 – deTour 2021, Hong Kong’s design festival, makes its annual returns to central PMQ from 26 November to 12 December. Organised at PMQ and sponsored by Create Hong Kong, the 2021 deTour festival is a collaborative effort between local creative Shin Wong with Trilingual Design’s Chris Tsui and Adonian Chan that links the virtual with the physical through interactive exhibitions, design seminars and workshops under the singular theme “Use(fu)less”. Though rudimentary concepts and thinking, the exhibition encourages audiences to actively rethink the very basic functions of design.
deTour 2021 is divided into three main exhibitions presented via 37 workshops and 12 design lectures in both virtual and physical formats, available to the public for free:
International Collaboration: Sputniko! “Red Silk of Fate – The Shrine”
There’s a single common symbol that ties together Chinese, Japanese and Korean mythologies: the “Red Silk of Fate”. Believed to be tied by the gods to two people that are destined to be together.
It is the common subject for Japanese-British artist Sputniko!, who has brought the symbol to life with biotech scientists from NIAS, spun by engineered silkworms and injected with the social-bonding love hormone, oxytocin. Featured through a selection of mediums, from costume design to Japanese short films, each offers an alternative possibility and potential to the red silk thread.
For deTour 2021, especially Sputniko! has collaborated with local design firm, Napp Studio & Architects, for a brand-new reimagining of this mythical silk thread. Carefully ribboned through a piece of fabric, the piece is folded to replicate an ancient shrine that’s dedicated to love. It carries new meanings of beliefs and desires, emotions and purpose. Backed by diffused lighting to mimic the soft glow of moonlight, guests are encouraged to admire the ornate floral patterns, and with the ancient lore still fresh in mind, reflect on the meaning of emotion and connection during the time of social distancing, and how innovative biotechnology has granted new meanings to time-honoured tales.
Curators’ Choice: Four design installations that present the power of collaboration
- Philosophy x Design: I know not what CAFÉ (Upper left)
Wherever your go-to spot may be, it is the cup of coffee that defines the experience –– design often relegated to a second after-thought. “I know not what CAFÉ” flips this traditional model and brings design to the forefront to demonstrate how the subtle function of spatial design can shape the coffee shop experience –– and personal perspectives –– as a whole.
- Sound x Design: The Interpreter (Upper right)
- Typography X Design: Type–11 (Lower left)
Does typography matter?
- Sports x Design: Strong Hold Pavilion (Lower right)
The growing popularity of bouldering has opened up new avenues for a deeper understanding of the sport. Indoor bouldering, for example, relies on more conversation and communication of discussions regarding climbing routes and techniques in comparison to outdoor climbing. More importantly, it allows encouragement that can effectively motivate climbers to push further.
Hong Kong rock climbing athlete, Au Chi Fung, joins sustainable designer, Match Chen, in the creation of “Strong Hold Pavilion”, an experimental installation that explores the effectiveness of team camaraderie and verbal motivation. Can the presence of a full team push you further than an individual practice? Guided by a common training technique in sport climbing –– “hang-boarding” –– viewers are challenged to physically put this theory to the test and discover the “useful” and ‘uselessness” of team camaraderie and verbal motivation in the occasion of self-performance.
Selected Entries: 10 locally sourced design groups share creative angles
deTour has always operated as an inspiration space for creativity and open exchange between various design facets. This year’s open call entries were met with an enthusiastic response, receiving over 120 design proposals. Along with professional design teams, this year’s deTour 2021 extended to design students. 10 exhibitors were selected based on the 2021 “Use(fu)less” theme and covers an extensive range of concepts including living environment, technology, interpersonal relationship and spatial design. Two highlights include:
- “ELDER”, designed by JONO Craftspace (Left) – Inspired by the bones in our bodies, “ELDER” reimagines the basic framework of the human figure through the lens of precision manufacturing borne out of the Industrial Revolution. Wood scraps are ingeniously engineered with bionics to replicate the spine, with industry hardware posing as tendons and muscles. It presents a moving art installation that asks, “Can we replicate function shapes of bones in design?” Like those in the human body, the ‘bones’ are subjected to “evolution” overtime to learn new functions –– in this case, the adding of connecting parts impart new meaning and a structural purpose to defunct pieces of wood.
- “Work in the Woods” (Right) – Ideated by three architects, Anson Kwan, Jackie Cheung and Ryan Tung, who collectively graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture at the University of London, “Work in the Woods” subjects its viewer to a futuristic look into a mixed work-life reality in Hong Kong’s micro apartments. Inspired by the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, changing realities have prompted us to reassess how we live in the future, with a growing desire to work from home. Redefining the meaning of a traditional workspace, “Work in the Woods” reimagines a space that is intuitive and physical to transform banal working routines.
Special Exhibition: Sci-Fi artist Lucy McRae on the future of human existence
To encourage further reflection on an item’s intrinsic Use(fu)less”, deTour 2021 invites world-renowned Sci-Fi artist and body architect, Lucy McRae. She is widely known for her thought-provoking pieces that comment on the future state of humankind through installations, photography, artificial intelligence, edible technology and film.
At PMQ, McRae shares five of her most iconic pieces that reflect this subject through exploring various limits of the body, beauty, biotechnology and the self. It’s a continuation of her exploration of the cultural and emotional impact on science and technology in redesigning the body and the state of the “Future” viewed while questioning “Who am I?”
A virtual exploration of exhibitions and design dialogues at deTour
As exhibitions at deTour are available in both physical and virtual formats, it has allowed deTour to become a destination for design enthusiasts near and afar. The installations are all accessible online through the official website, which is dissected into a short explanation and an accompanying audio track. The track can be played and paused throughout for easy addition of noted connotations at points where the listener feels are useful or useless — fitting into the design festival overall theme “Use(fu)less”. For digital visitors, design dialogues are available online and easily accessed via YouTube. It is these interactive features that have allowed deTour to bring a successful, multi-faceted experience to a wider audience.

Catalyst Motors one step closer to launching its made-in-Singapore sports car with successful car performance evaluation
SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 6 December 2021 – Homegrown automotive manufacturing start-up, Catalyst Motors, is one step closer to launching its made-in-Singapore sports car after a round of performance testing for its 1960s classic-style two-door sports car held several weeks ago.
Artist impression of Centre of Automobile and Industrial Design
The vehicle was put to a high-speed test in a circuit at Changi Aviation Park to evaluate its road-holding, driving and manoeuvring performance – especially in the areas of structural rigidity and torsional stability.
The firm completed the built of the rolling chassis in 2019, with its frame assembled in-house by hand using aircraft and automotive-grade aluminium. Modular in nature,
Catalyst Motors intended for its rolling chassis design to be easily applied to other types of cars. In addition to the retro-themed sports car, the company intends to build a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and supercar in the future as well.
Founded in 2014 by entrepreneurs Lionel Lau and Anthony Parks, two automotive enthusiasts who have known each other for 22 years, the duo also enlisted the help of three engineering instructors from the National University of Singapore (NUS) — Lim Hong Wee, Hozefa Husainne and Kenneth Neo — who have prior experience in building cars thanks to their involvement in NUS’ Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) race car project.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, plans for the fully private-funded sports car have been slightly derailed, with a shortage of manpower in the automobile manufacturing industry and factories. From the onset, Catalyst Motors envisioned a project team complete with local talent and embarked on a Singaporean-strong plan, curating a bevy of local partners to work with. Catalyst Motors aim to produce a car model that offers personal transportation in both neo-classic and utilitarian forms and is functional with modern personalised connectivity and individual styles and needs, offering owners the opportunity to determine various elements of their vehicle.
Strategic Collaborators
- Lytt Labs
Sealing an exclusive partnership with local timepiece label Lytt Labs, whose watch designs will be the inspiration of the vehicle’s dashboard, expect to see elements such as the odometer resembling the dial of Lytt Labs’ signature Inception V1.0 watch.
- Global Dynamics
Helmed by Edwin Seah, an international entrepreneur with a penchant for cars and watches; who also owns Lytt Labs, Global Dynamics, based in China, will be assisting in sourcing suppliers and logistics for Catalyst Motor’s operations.
- Song Wei Teo
An industrial designer with a strong interest and fresh ideas for car designs, Song Wei Teo graduated from Automotive Design at Coventry University, United Kingdom.
Song Wei contributes to Catalyst Motor’s design processes with his belief that a car’s design must be lightweight, employing the practical use of design to enable manufacturing methods and materials to fit form and function – and making them work seamlessly.
- Meisterform
Meisterform’ Bryan Wong and Jake Lin specialises in forged wheels manufacturing and lends their expertise to Catalyst Motor’s kinetic and suspension development with their engineering experience in motion symmetry, kinetics and travel-surface telemetry, to facilitate the crucial road-going properties of the vehicles.
- Sound Image Productions
Aaron Koh, concert producer, sound specialist and owner of Sound Image Productions helms Catalyst Motor’s car cabin acoustics and sound design, customising the most optimum sound system in each vehicle.
- Robson Design
An industry veteran with over 25 years of experience and branches in Vietnam and Japan, Robson Design, founded by Tommy Wong, specialises in carbon fibre and interiors for automotive parts and will be supporting Catalyst Motors with the fitting-out of its bespoke vehicles, providing leather, interior finishing and fabrication needs.
- HHT Automation
In Catalyst Motor’s planned intelligent and future-ready production design, Vincent Wong of HHT Automation will consult on the company’s high-tech manufacturing needs through robotics and automation and play an important role for the Centre of Automobile and Industrial Design upon its completion. Production and manufacturing processes will be geared up to suit the fast-changing and evolving engineering landscape of today.
Lionel Lau shares that “durability, manufacturability and ease of assembly when designing a commercial roadworthy car is of utmost importance. We understand the challenges we are going to face and we are prepared to meet them head on as we are confident of the outcome of our project. We are pleased to assemble a truly Singaporean team and with the launch of our vehicle, we hope to be a testament that there’s creative talent everywhere in Singapore, in so many different design and manufacturing disciplines.”
The completed rolling prototype chassis – the integral form of the vehicle’s engineering base, will be sent to Britain in late 2021, to be certified and validated for the next step of its manufacturing progress.
Currently in the pipeline, Catalyst Motors, together with local architects and fabricators, is also working on the development of an automobile focused design and industry outreach facility, the Centre of Automobile and Industrial Design (CAID) by 2023, to promote academic and technical training, co-learning as well as to garner more interest and cultivate talents in the local automotive scene among youths.

Vihari Jewels’ new flagship store opens at Paragon amidst the ongoing pandemic
SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 6 December 2021 – Fourth generation private jeweller, Vihari Sheth-Poddar is ready to bring her eponymous brand, VIHARI JEWELS, to the next level with the opening of its 1340 sqft store at Paragon Shopping Mall, in the heart of Orchard Road. With the opening of a flagship store, Vihari hopes to evolve her brand from an in-the-know business to one that will be accessible to everyone and introduce the beauty of coloured diamonds to more.
Founded in 2006, VIHARI JEWELS has created a niche market for discerning clientele who values heirloom pieces composed of rare, opulent, one-of-a-kind, investment grade stones. More recently, the brand has also started offering a seasonal line of trendier jewellery that, while more affordable, still boasts rare stones that will carry their value across generations. Founded and designed by ex-model Vihari Sheth Poddar, the mother of three brings whimsicality, uniqueness and muted glamour to her collections inspired by travel.
The store was envisioned to feel like a museum and designed to be a creative space, simulating an industrial mine – the heartbeat of where gemology and jewellery begin, so that customers have the opportunity to learn about the origins of the various stones. With an island bar taking centre stage on the shopfloor, Vihari hopes customers would feel relaxed and comfortable to hang out in store, whether it’s jewellery shopping or whiskey tasting.
To celebrate its flagship store’s opening, VIHARI JEWELS has launched another exciting collection this holiday season with a glamorous and luminescent selection of pieces that are reminiscent of the brand’s commitment to celebrations and festivities while being enveloped in familial love.
Titled “The Eternal Orchid”, the collection pays homage to Singapore’s national flower – the Vanda Miss Joaquim, to celebrate the jewellery house’s very first boutique in the city that has become home to its founder. Inspired by the orchid’s rare attribute of exhibiting symmetry which mirrors the exceptional symmetry found in VIHARI JEWELS’ diamonds, the 7-piece collection showcases bold and sophisticated pieces with understated glamour. Orchids also served as the muse as they can thrive for up to a hundred years in the right environment – considered a lifetime to plants; similar to the lasting power of natural diamonds that are forever.
Hailing from a long line of jewellers, Vihari credits her father as her greatest mentor and her brother as her reliable partner who is responsible for the sourcing and cutting of all the diamonds she uses, giving her an edge over other jewellers. “The pandemic has led to certain constraints, especially on cross-border travel, but it has also given rise to new ways of doing business, hence I felt it was the right time to expand my business and reach out to more customers who are looking for alternative assets investments. We have also used this time to establish a strong digital presence and focused on customer relationship management,” Vihari shares.
With the ongoing Covid19 pandemic and the decline of large-scale events, Vihari notes that there’s been a shift in consumer behaviour when it comes to gems and trendier, quirkier and less formal pieces are more in demand and the jewellery house continues to create conversation pieces that are perfect for intimate gatherings.
Tying old traditions with new memories, the 15 year old jewellery house looks set to herald a new dawn with more engaging lifestyle events and one-of-a-kind designs at its new location. Vihari also aims to educate clients on how to select jewellery and provide consultations for those who would like to know which pieces are a good fit for their private collections.
About VIHARI JEWELS
VIHARI JEWELS is the eponymous fine jewellery label created by Vihari Sheth Poddar in 2006. Headquartered in Singapore, with a base in Hong Kong, VIHARI JEWELS specialises in meticulously crafted heirloom pieces which showcases the beauty of the exquisite stones that the house sources around the world for. The design aesthetic of the brand is classic contemporary and counts many of Singapore’s social elites among its customers.
Operating initially as a by-appointment-only boutique, VIHARI JEWELS served as an in-the-know jeweller with a penchant for acquiring extremely rare coloured diamonds, Colombian emeralds and Burmese rubies. The brand launches its first flagship store at Paragon, at the heart of Orchard Road, at the end of month, expanding its collections and clientele at a prominent location.

LESSO Upgrades its Brand Strategy in the Hope of Accelerating Development in the Next Decade
HONG KONG, CHINA – Media Outreach – 6 December 2021 – China Lesso has upgraded its brand strategy comprehensively, unveiled a brand-new logo, and sped up its pace towards Branding 4.0 on its 35th anniversary.
Throughout the long history of human development, the relationship between human and nature is one of the main universal themes that evolve constantly. Impacted by social development, balancing environmental sustainability and social progression has become the core of daily life for Chinese citizens. For people’s well-being, it is imperative to build green, livable, and efficient ideal cities.
China Lesso (https://en.lesso.com/) believes that the world will be a better place while all sectors of society work together to build a healthy and organic human environment and living space. To achieve the Big Ideal, Lesso shall adhere to new brand values of “Focusing on product quality, insisting on creativity, creating high-value products and services for society”, and to fulfill its brand promise of “Striving for a sustainable, healthy and beautiful life”. It is hoping to gather insight across the industry to create a wonderful living space for people to live in harmony with nature. China Lesso will continue providing high-quality building materials as well as household products and services for human-nature coexistence, helping upgrade cities and residences, and exploring the potential for sustainable urban development.
China Lesso has also explicitly stated its brand positioning and strategic orientation for a promising future. In the next decade, China Lesso is committed to becoming a global group for manufacturing and supplying piping and building materials and offering an eco-industrial platform for humanistic environment and living spaces. Giving full play to its core values as much as possible, China Lesso will facilitate the construction of humanistic and healthy green buildings with high-quality pipelines, building materials, and home furnishings. In addition, China Lesso will also endeavor to optimize the construction of urban infrastructure and promote sustainable urban and town development; strengthen intelligent industrial management and support the modernization and upgrade of traditional industries; and provide high-quality technical products and services for national megaprojects.
In terms of visual identity, the redesigned logo not only extends brand equity with 35 years of history, it also brings forward new connotation, which better illustrates the trends of modern design. It consists of two components, “LESSO” in English and “Liansu” in Chinese. For the innovative design of the English logo, China Lesso was inspired by its brand slogan “Envisioning the better, Building the future”, and adopted a circle as the framework of the English logo to highlight the characteristics of the pipeline industry and create a great sense of visual coordination.
To fully embody the concept of “Envisioning the better, Building the future”, Lesso has incorporated every English letter into the circle, with all right-angle corners of letters softened, to greatly enhance brand affinity. In addition, the proportions between letters are optimized with well-designed spacing to improve integrity and legibility of the brand name.
For the design of the Chinese logo, China Lesso chose to unify the width of each stroke visually by weakening the traditional sense brought by the contrast of the width of strokes and increasing the sense of modernity. The design technique of the English letters was also adopted for the stroke design of the Chinese characters to integrate them with the perfect circle to augment the large rounded corners feature, which works with the affinity of the font and shortens the distance between the brand and consumers.
In terms of color optimization, red is an important brand visual asset of Lesso. Therefore, China Lesso retained the colour red as the theme and made the tone more conspicuous by increasing its brightness and saturation, which reduces the traditional industrial sense that the color normally conveyed to us, making the brand stands out among other brands at first glance, and improving Lesso’s brand recognition. Learn more about Lesso’s rebranding from this video: https://youtu.be/UX5AltnPWmM
The brand upgrade channels China Lesso’s good expectations for brand and social development. In the future, China Lesso will move forward with practical actions, and constant innovation, providing better urban construction and living space for everyone, building green, livable, and efficient ideal cities, gathering wisdom and strength of the whole society, and striving for sustainable healthy and beautiful life.

SunMirror AG: Latitude 66 Announces High-Grade Cobalt Intercepted at K9 Target
ZUG, SWITZERLAND – EQS Newswire – 6 December 2021 – SunMirror AG (“SunMirror”; Vienna Stock Exchange: ROR1; Frankfurt Stock Exchange: ROR; Düsseldorf Stock Exchange: ROR; ISIN CH0396131929), is pleased to advise that Latitude 66 Cobalt Limited (“Lat66”), which is in the process of being acquired by SunMirror, today announced the discovery of a new high-grade cobalt zone at its 100%-owned Kuusamo Schist Belt Cobalt-Gold-Copper Project in Finland. This new high-grade discovery is located approximately 23 kilometres south-west of the existing K1 resource zone.
The intercept returned from the diamond drill hole (51.7 metres @ 0.44% Co, 0.24 g/t Au, 0.07% Cu from 123.2 metres) is thick, relatively shallow and inclusive of an exceptionally high-grade zone (8.3 metres @ 1.02% Co). This new prospect remains open in all directions.
Thomas Hoyer, CEO of Lat66, stated: “This is a very significant initial result, testing one of three known geophysical anomalies in the area. We will commence down hole electromagnetics to gain a better understanding of the local prospectivity and establish high potential drill targets with the aim of expanding this intersection and to test the other two anomalies.
Mr Hoyer added “The Finnish Geological Survey has previously performed extensive scientific research in the region targeting battery minerals and this additional high-grade intersection, 23 kilometres south west our existing K1 resource, underpins our belief that the Kuusamo Schist Belt hosts a series of high-grade cobalt zones.”
Dr Heinz Kubli, CEO of SunMirror, stated that: “This high-grade intercept and discovery of a new mineralized zone, reinforces our view that Latitude 66, which holds 9400 square kilometres of exploration permits in Finland and an existing cobalt resource, has the potential to be a significant part of the sustainable and ethical supply of critical raw materials for the EU as part of the green transition.”
In June 2021, The International Energy Agency published a report estimating that in order to achieve the goals agreed at the Paris Climate Agreement, the demand for Cobalt will grow 21 times by the year 2040. Such unprecedented growth in demand will require substantial volumes of material originating from new mines. Finland today has 3 cobalt refineries and is the second largest refiner of Cobalt after China. Additional sources of supply of cobalt from within Finland feeding this Cobalt refining capability, together with available renewable energy to drive the mining and refining process, will help to enable the EU to have a secure domestic sustainable and ethical supply of low carbon footprint cobalt.
