Cambrex Expands Peptide Manufacturing Capabilities in Waltham, Massachusetts

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Cambrex, a leading global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), today announced that Snapdragon Chemistry, a Cambrex company, has expanded its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) facility in Waltham, Massachusetts to further support the development and manufacturing of peptide therapies.

The new GMP manufacturing suite increases the overall facility footprint by 20% and includes an ISO-7 cleanroom for preparative HPLC chromatography and lyophilization, cold storage for raw materials and a product storage suite. With the completion of this investment, Snapdragon can now support peptide projects from development to GMP manufacturing using solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), liquid-phase peptide synthesis (LPPS), or hybrid approaches.

“We designed this facility with a three-step strategy in mind for the development of peptide drug candidates,” said Dr. Eric Fang, General Manager at Snapdragon Chemistry. “We start with automated SPPS technology for proof-of-concept. In parallel, we optimize the process using LPPS technology to accelerate development and reduce manufacturing cost. We can then transfer the process to our large manufacturing facilities, such as Charles City, Iowa, to produce materials in traditional large batch reactors, significantly reducing the cost of those drugs.”

Snapdragon’s LPPS technology utilizes traditional API batch reactors and continuous flow, obviating the dependency on specialized, solid-phase reactors. This new LPPS technology materially reduces solvent demand and the need for excess reagents compared to standard solid-state peptide synthesis processes.

“SPPS certainly has its place. We use it in early development to get to the clinic and to proof-of-concept quickly, but it’s not a scalable solution if you want to supply a huge patient population,” said Dr. Matt Bio, Chief Scientific Officer, Cambrex. “We designed the LPPS process so that we can leverage all 1.4 million Liters of capacity within Cambrex to deliver peptide therapies.”

Cambrex continues to invest in R&D across complex synthetic modalities, including further innovation for peptide manufacturing, as well as new research on the application of artificial intelligence for the optimization of oligonucleotide processes.

Philippines’ First Megawatt-Scale Floating Solar Plant Successfully Connected to the Grid

HEFEI, China, Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In active response to the Philippines’ energy transition strategy, Black & Veatch, a global leader in energy and infrastructure, has successfully completed the country’s first megawatt-scale floating solar power plant at the Malubog Reservoir in Cebu City. The project, fully equipped with Sungrow FPV’s floating solar system solutions, supplies clean and stable power to the Carmen Copper mining site, contributing to the Philippines’ national target of achieving a 35% renewable energy share by 2030.

With a total capacity of 4.99 MW, the plant’s electricity is entirely for self-consumption, meeting around 10% of the mine’s energy demand.

Highlights of Sungrow FPV’s floating solar system:

  • Robust Wind Resistance: Located in an area prone to strong winds and extreme weather, the project was engineered with a special anti-wind and wave design based on an ultimate wind speed of 75 m/s, enhancing the system’s impact resistance by 50%. It passed fatigue tests of over one million cycles, far exceeding the industry benchmark of 100,000 cycles. An elastic mooring system effectively absorbs and dissipates wave energy, ensuring long-term stability.
  • Superior Anti-Corrosion Performance: An innovative composite coating scheme was applied for anti-corrosion protection. The system withstood 4,200 hours of the harshest CX-class environmental testing and showed no changes after over 18,000 hours of real-world marine exposure, effectively addressing the project’s corrosion challenges.

Floating solar plants save valuable land resources and offer high generation efficiency, making this project a key step in the Philippines’ mining sector’s green transition. From solution design and installation to grid connection and commissioning, the Sungrow FPV service team provided end-to-end technical support and rapid response, ensuring smooth project completion.

Sungrow FPV will continue to drive innovation and deepen collaboration with global partners to deliver more benchmark projects and accelerate the path toward a greener, more efficient renewable energy future.

About Sungrow FPV

ASTRI Summer Internship Programme Nurtures I&T Talents

Develop Smart Technologies from Scratch

HONG KONG, Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) concluded its Summer Internship Programme on 15 August.  A total of 38 interns from top-tier universities worldwide, selected from 2,500 applicants, have successfully completed an enriching eight-week work experience.

“At ASTRI, we are committed to nurturing young talent and driving innovation forward,” said Ir Dr Ted Suen, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI. “I’m delighted to see how the internship programme has inspired these bright minds to embark on their innovation and technology (I&T) journey in this vibrant city after graduation.”

Industry Engagement

During the programme, ASTRI’s talent acquisition team organised a series of events, including a CTO Dialogue, two “Tech Talk” seminars, a presentation skill training workshop, company visits and networking sessions. These activities offered interns valuable exposures to industry experts and insights into Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem.

Visits to organisations such as Bank of China (Hong Kong), Cyberport, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, IBM and HKSTP Experience Centre provided a comprehensive understanding of the industry landscape.

Funded by the STEM Internship Scheme under the Innovation and Technology Fund of the Innovation and Technology Commission, the programme paired interns with senior researchers to work on hands-on research and development (R&D) projects. These projects spanned diverse areas, including AI-powered solutions, digital health, FinTech, green technologies, robotics and more.

Smart Technologies for Greater Good

Darshbir Singh Kohli developed a real-time monitoring system to track environmental conditions and optimises inverter efficiency. His projects contribute to the development of a solar-powered bi-directional DC-AC inverter and EV charging station, advancing smarter energy management and sustainability.

A first-year engineering student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Darshbir shared, “I felt deeply motivated knowing that my work could make a tangible impact on improving the environment and achieving carbon neutrality.”

Russell Lam, a second-year life science student at the University of Toronto, contributed to the development of an electronic nose system to classify food waste based on gas profiles. He conducted rough trials, determined the concentration range for spoilage gases, and experimented with flow and diffusion sensor systems.

This low-cost energy solution efficiently sorts food waste for reuse in energy production or animal feed, promoting sustainable waste management. Reflecting on the internship, Russell said: “The opportunity to develop the electronic nose system from concept to prototype taught me the importance of considering both technical feasibility and practical implementation in innovation.”

AI-powered Financial Solutions

Heison Cheung addressed financial fraud by creating a font recognition model to detect fake bank statements. Using real data and a convolutional neural network, he developed a system capable of identifying unusual font styles, even detecting subtle variations that might escape human notice.

A second-year data science and analytics student at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Heison described his experience as transformative: “Working at ASTRI has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic journey. I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge to real-world problems, contribute to meaningful solutions, and learn from seasoned professionals.”
