Zenyum: First impressions matter, and so does your smile! 84% Hong Kong singles find a nice smile more attractive than a six-pack

Zenyum and Coffee Meets Bagel launch findings of joint survey “Smile At First Sight”

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 14 December 2022 – Although this concludes the third year of living with COVID, the pandemic has never stopped us from making new connections. A joint survey conducted by Zenyum and Coffee Meets Bagel (CMB) have found that 84% of singles in Hong Kong are attracted to a nice smile on a first date rather than other physical attributes like a six-pack. Titled “Smile At First Sight”, the survey sought to discover what singles really want in a partner and what the general sentiment is around dating in Hong Kong.

“This survey proves that despite the COVID lock-down and emigration wave in Hong Kong, people in the city are still very optimistic about going on quality dates,” said Steven Wu, Managing Director of Zenyum Hong Kong. “Be open, be honest, and be yourself. Go out there and meet people you feel you can build a meaningful connection and share many smiles with. People are most attractive when they smile!”

“A smile is the key to unlocking the magic on your first date,” says Dawoon Kang, Co-founder and Chief Dating Officer from Coffee Meets Bagel. “Attractiveness is more than physical traits, a kind smile is what people long for after this prolonged period of masked faces.”

Smiles or six-packs?

When asked about the post-COVID dating outlook in Hong Kong, 1,782 CMB app users say that they are active on the dating scene. 75% of respondents have spent more time on dating apps post-COVID, despite the difficulties brought about by closures of public spaces and limited availability of dating locations. Over 80% of them still desire to meet new people. In the past two years, 66% of app users have experienced a date getting cancelled or failed to attend a date due to the closure of public spaces. 60% felt it was harder to find a compatible partner in Hong Kong due to COVID restrictions, travel bans and the wave of emigration. Yet 81% of respondents expressed strongly that they would not skip a date or stop meeting new people due to the fear of COVID.

Some common misconceptions are that you need to be well-off or look like a movie star to get matched with someone on a dating app. Yet regardless of gender, the most important traits we look for in a partner are their personality, confidence and a kind smile. The top three qualities in the survey results include honesty (76%), a nice smile (60%), and intelligence (52%). Other interesting findings were that 10% of respondents believed star sign compatibility was important and 3.5% wanted their date to be a K-drama fanatic!

First impressions do count, but not in the way you think they do. Physical attributes like height (57%), straight teeth (49%), and cute dimples (23%) are still appreciated by many, but the highest ranking physical attribute that almost all users like is a nice and kind smile (84%).

In fact, over half of Hong Kong singles believe that their smiles (58%) and personal style (63%) are key to attracting the right date! Rather than just chasing after a six-pack which only 14% of respondents voted as an attractive or very attractive physical trait, it is still important to maintain those pearly whites to dazzle your date.

Another aspect that users highlighted is the importance of personal hygiene on a first date. The survey highlights the biggest turn-offs for our respondents, such as bad breath (65%), body odour (63%), and dirty fingernails (62%).

Profile Photo: Gym selfie or Cat pics?

How do you prepare yourself for a first date? First of all, it is important to look presentable and have good hygiene. The survey has shown that a smile is a curve that sets everything straight, so work on keeping your teeth clean and flash a big smile to make an excellent first impression.

Uploading a profile picture which shows you smiling widely will also make a strong statement about your personality. Ditch the gym selfie and party photos for a nice candid shot. Only 7% stated they would swipe right to a gym selfie and 96% voted against party shots. It is important to flaunt that smile on your profile, and even better if you have a furry friend in the frame!

Showing your teeth when you smile also exudes confidence; make sure you are not posing too much and keep it natural. If you are out of ideas, why not upload a photo of yourself enjoying some good food? Not only will this highlight your great taste, it can also serve as a good conversation topic when you meet your date.

First Date: Icebreakers and Deal breakers

When you are on a date, it is best to avoid conversations about your ex, your family or your pet peeves. Too much information shared on a first date can be a turn-off for many! 77% strongly believe that it is not good to speak about past relationships and 43% prefer not to talk about their family on a first date. Instead, respondents feel it is better to talk about your lifestyle (67%), favourite food & drinks (65%) or travel destinations (55%). One fun fact is that 34% of respondents do not think that talking about Netflix shows is a good icebreaker. So try building the conversation around other hobbies or shared values instead!

Live, Laugh, Smile!

“I’ve always been misunderstood because I had an unapproachable expression when I first started my career since my buck teeth made me very insecure about smiling. Now I’ve learnt to embrace my unique smile and take good care of it” said Val Cho, a member of the girl group “Strayz”. “I know a lot of friends who’ve had great experiences on dating apps, and many have even met lifelong partners online.”

“Being unclean and unkempt is the worst turn-off. Always maintain a good smile and appearance to charm your date,” said ViuTV artist Kilby Chan.

“Looking tidy with a nice scent would set the stage for a perfect date,” said Westtung Leung, the champion of Miss Mask Pageant 2. “A nice and attractive smile would be a big bonus too!”

Some singles also shared their best dating tips including uploading pictures of yourself without a mask, being honest and cutting out pretentiousness, and meeting up in person to avoid an endless chain of text messages. Users were asked to share one piece of advice for singles looking for a long-term partner in Hong Kong. The top five were being honest, punctual, having confidence, being who you are and smiling.

Four Key Survey Insights

Here are some quick dating app tips that our survey respondents have shared to help you in your search for a long-term partner.

1. Use a profile photo with a toothy smile

Invest some time in finding a photo of yourself smiling confidently to show your personality. You can even spice it up by taking a photo with some of your furry friends.

2. Groom yourself before meeting your date

While everyone may have different tastes for the perfect outfit, having a nice and kind smile always works. In addition, never underestimate the power of looking clean and tidy. Nothing is more off-putting than having bad breath, stained teeth, body odour, and dirty fingernails with that fancy outfit.

3. Prepare conversation topics for the first date

If you do not have the gift of the gap, start with common topics like your favourite food and drinks, or top travel destinations. Contrary to popular belief, talking about recent Netflix shows can be tricky, unless you are sure your date has watched the same show and that they are not bothered if you reveal a couple of spoilers. After getting warmed up, sharing your dreams and aspirations is a good option too. However, avoid going too deep into personal matters on the first date.

4. Make yourself more kissable

White, straight and clean teeth would definitely make you extra kissable. Keep your appearance neat and tidy too so you look more attractive to your date.

Pioneering in the commercialization of Perovskite, GCL Photoelectric Materials Completed RMB 500 Million B+ Round of Financing

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 14 December 2022 – Recently, Kunshan GCL Photoelectric Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “GCL Photoelectric Materials”), a subsidiary of GCL TECH, announced the completion of RMB 500 million B+ round of financing, which was jointly led by Temasek, Sequoia China, and IDG Capital, followed by Longwater Investment and other institutions. GCL TECH, the major shareholder, continued to increase their investments, with Lighthouse Capital serving as the exclusive financial advisor. It is reported that this round of financing will be used to improve the process and equipment development of the 100MW perovskite module production line of GCL Photoelectric Materials.

Photovoltaic technology is an important engine to boost the green transformation of energy under the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Perovskite solar cell is considered one of the most promising solar cell technologies in the future due to their advantages of high conversion efficiency, fast iteration speed, short process flow, low raw material cost, and low energy consumption. Perovskite solar cell is still in the early stage of industrialization with the formula, equipment, and technology still under iterative development. Once the mass production process of large-area modules is mature, perovskite batteries will go on a different commercial path from crystalline silicon with lower cost, and richer application scenarios.

As the global leader in the industrialization of perovskite in solar power modules, GCL Photoelectric Materials is far ahead in the conversion efficiency of large-area preparation of perovskite and the progress of a 100MW mass production line.

Leading the Industrialization Process of Perovskite
The 100MW Mass Production Line for Modules with the World’s Largest Area Has Been Built

GCL Photoelectric Materials has accumulated rich industrialization experience in the stage of large-area module efficiency and pilot test line and successfully enlarged it onto a 100MW large-area module production line, leading the world in the two key indicators of finished module efficiency and stability.

In September 2021, GCL Photoelectric Materials built the world’s first 100MW mass production line, with a module size of 1m × 2m. At present, GCL Photoelectric Materials’ 100MW mass production line is in the stage of process development and equipment transformation, with the conversion efficiency of finished modules steadily improving. It is expected that the conversion efficiency will exceed 16% by the end of this year and 18% by the end of 2023, becoming the first 100MW production line in the world to run through mass production.

-image.jpg

The conversion efficiency of 18% is of great significance to perovskite industrialization. At present, the actual efficiency of 1m × 2m crystalline silicon modules on the market is about 20%. Due to the different circuit structure from crystalline silicon modules, the power generation of perovskite modules with the same efficiency is 5% higher than that of crystalline silicon on average. If GCL Photoelectric Materials’ 100MW production line were able to mass produce 18%-efficiency large-size modules, with the lower manufacturing cost of perovskite modules, it would significantly strengthen the competitiveness of perovskite modules in the photovoltaic market.

In terms of stability, most advanced laboratories have been able to continuously operate perovskite modules for at least 1,000 hours without attenuation. The service life of GCL Photoelectric Materials 100MW finished products is expected to exceed 25 years. On June 7th, 2022, the 1m × 2m perovskite modules produced by the company passed the hail test, which is a strong piece of evidence for the tolerance of large-area modules in severe weather.

With Continuous Independent Innovation, GCL Photoelectric Materials Leads the World in Large-Area Preparation Efficiency

The conversion efficiency of perovskite is the industry’s most concerned index. Currently, the conversion efficiency of a single junction of perovskite can reach 26% in the laboratory, the theoretical conversion efficiency can reach 33%, and the theoretical efficiency of tandem perovskite cells can reach 45%, which is much higher than that of the crystalline silicon battery. However, this index is only of practical industrial significance when it is on a module with a large enough area for commercialization.

Large-area preparation is one of the biggest challenges for perovskite mass production. Small-sized modules are of little economic value. Therefore, perovskite components need to be larger to reduce costs for mass production. However, the large-area preparation of perovskite films faces such problems as non-uniformity and increased resistivity, sharply reducing the conversion efficiency. Manufacturers must systematically redesign and commission the material formula, coating, crystallization, laser, and more to ensure that the module efficiency will not be impaired in large-area preparation.

As early as 2019, GCL Photoelectric Materials took the lead in completing 15.31% efficiency certification of 45cm × 65cm (2925cm2) large-area perovskite module.

With continuous technological innovation advantages, GCL Photoelectric Materials has made breakthroughs in the conversion efficiency of large-area modules. At present, the 1m × 2m perovskite module produced by GCL Photoelectric Materials is the world’s largest perovskite module, with the conversion efficiency of finished modules being nearly 16%, which is expected to exceed 18% by the end of 2023.

Accelerate the Green Transformation of Global Energy
To Become a Globally Competitive Perovskite Module Manufacturer

Driven by the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, governments worldwide have accelerated the transition to green energy. New energy technologies represented by photovoltaics have ushered in a golden stage of development, with the installed capacity of new photovoltaics globally rising rapidly every year. According to the survey report of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global installed capacity of new photovoltaics is expected to be 190GW in 2022, reaching a record high. However, due to the cyclical adjustment of the photovoltaic industry and the rising cost of silicon materials, among other factors, the actual installed photovoltaic capacity in the world has fallen short of expectations since 2021.

In this context, perovskite battery, as a new generation of solar cell technology, has a broad commercial prospect. Compared with traditional crystalline silicon batteries, the perovskite battery preparation process is shorter with lower energy consumption, boasting obvious cost advantages. The highest process temperature in the whole process of perovskite module preparation is lower than 150 Celsius degrees, with the unit energy consumption being only one-tenth of that of the crystalline silicon module and the investment per unit capacity is only about half of the crystalline silicon. At the same time, because of its excellent characteristics, such as being lightweight, thin, flexible, and translucent, perovskite photovoltaic modules have more applications than crystalline silicon batteries. They can be used in photovoltaic panels for ground power stations, BIPV curtain walls, electric vehicles, and more.

The advantages of high efficiency, low cost, low energy consumption, and rich application scenarios make perovskite batteries one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies with the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. According to the report of Precedence Research, an international market research organization, the global perovskite solar cell market was about USD 600 million in 2021, which will jump to USD 7.2 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 31.8%.

GCL Photoelectric Materials is a world leader in the R&D and mass production technology of perovskite batteries. As of now, GCL Photoelectric Materials has been granted 64 patents, including 17 invention patents and 47 utility model patents. With this round of financing, GCL Photoelectric Materials will continue to increase its R&D efforts on the 100MW mass production line, strive to become the top perovskite module manufacturer with global competitiveness, and accelerate the green transformation of the global energy structure.

Fan Bin, founder and CEO of GCL Photoelectric Materials, stated that “GCL Photoelectric Materials has been committed to the industrialization of perovskite photovoltaic technologies for almost a decade. Thanks to everyone at GCL Photoelectric Materials and our investors, the commercialized production of perovskite modules is a dream that is about to come true. Compared with traditional technologies, perovskite photovoltaic technologies are expected to enable higher conversion efficiency, lower cost of power generation, and a significant reduction in environmental impacts during module manufacturing. Environmental-friendly, sustainable, and economical energy is the foundation for building a bright future for human society, which is worth fighting for. New shareholders introduced in this financing round are investment institutions with prestigious reputations and insightful visions in terms of capital and industry. Our earlier shareholders are also actively increasing their investments to show their continuous and strong support. Our team will work even harder to achieve our goals as soon as possible.”

Wang Xin, Partner of IDG Capital, said that “IDG Capital has been paying attention to the new energy domain since 2005 and is firmly optimistic about the photovoltaic industry in the long haul. Crystalline silicon batteries are approaching their theoretical efficiency, whereas perovskite is one of the most prospective technological pathways for the next-generation battery, opening up more potential for conversion efficiency and promoting the reduction of the cost of photovoltaic power generation. GCL Photoelectric Materials has been deeply involved in the field of perovskite for years, with its industrialization progress leading the industry. IDG Capital is happy to work with GCL Photoelectric Materials and looks forward to witnessing grander breakthroughs from them in the future.”

GCL TECH, a major shareholder of GCL Photoelectric Materials, stated “Guided by technology, driven by innovation, and empowered by digitalization, GCL Photoelectric Materials has successfully produced the 100MW large-size perovskite module and has entered the ecology of commercialized operation. GCL Photoelectric Materials is also thrusting the conversion efficiency to 18% from 16%, which was already a major breakthrough, creating an unprecedented record in the industry. We believe that the process and equipment development of GCL Photoelectric Materials would make even more significant progress after this B+ round of financing. Boasting frontier technologies that GCL has attached great importance to, GCL Photoelectric Materials will continue to be a top perovskite company that leads the industry by implementing continuous investment and key support to technologies for large-area perovskite modules. In the context of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, GCL TECH will provide comprehensive support in aspects including industrial synergy, scenario verification, technology application, and capital collaboration, accelerating the commercialization progress of large-size perovskite modules of GCL Photoelectric Materials and realizing the implementation and manufacturing of GW-level production lines.”

Xue Ling, Managing Director at Lighthouse Capital, expressed that “Lighthouse Capital has been continuously searching for industrial innovation opportunities under the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, focusing on technological breakthroughs as well as the implementation of industrialization of technologies. Perovskite is commonly recognized as the key material for next-generation photovoltaic modules and holds great potential. The GCL Photoelectric Materials team led by Dr. Fan has been committing to the industry for almost a decade and has been focusing on the first principle for technological breakthroughs of perovskite material and implementation of commercialization, pioneering the industry with breakthroughs in key processes such as coating and crystallization and leading far ahead in the progress of 1m × 2m large-area high-efficiency modules and 100MW mass production line. Lighthouse Capital fully recognizes the dedication and arrangement made by GCL Photoelectric Materials in the perovskite field and the foresight investment from the GCL Group in terms of innovation incubation. We are honored to work with GCL Photoelectric Materials during this new round of financing and hope to work hand in hand with them to promote the green transformation of the global energy structure.”

Good For The Earth: Honpo Introduces New Range Of Environmentally Friendly Wallpapers

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 14 December 2022 – Honpo, the top-rated wallcovering supplier in Singapore, is delighted to introduce a new collection – Flax Wallpaper – that allows homeowners to live more sustainably through the walls of their homes. Designed, developed, and produced by Honpo in their flagship factory in Japan, the Flax Wallpaper is the company’s first-ever initiative to expand its product offerings to cater to a rising number of green consumers in Singapore and around the world.

The Flax Wallpaper is 100% plant-derived and made from 65% flax fibre and 35% viscose. These raw materials not only adhere to global safety standards but also do not contain any harmful chemicals that further pollute the environment. In addition, the Flax Wallpaper will be decomposed by bacteria into the soil, preventing excess wastage and allowing consumers to lower their overall carbon footprint.

Despite the common misconception that environmentally friendly products are less effective, Honpo’s Flax Wallpaper does not fall into that category – being highly durable, tear-resistant, and robust. The Flax Wallpaper is also specifically designed to cater to Singapore’s weather conditions. It can reduce indoor humidity by absorbing moisture in the air.

Considering that sustainability is increasingly becoming a crucial factor for homeowners and interior designers worldwide, eco-friendly wallpapers, such as Honpo’s Flax Wallpaper, will provide an opportunity for consumers to lead their desired lifestyle.

Honpo has always made the effort to stay ahead of interior trends, which is why the company has decided to take the lead in producing sustainable wallpapers that have yet to be mainstream in the industry. This is made possible by the company’s effort to travel yearly to discover obscure brands and designs and experiment with different interior styles, materials, and many more.

Launched in Singapore in 2019, Honpo can be regarded as a global wallpaper specialist and the one-stop shop for all international wallpaper designs and wall decal stickers in Singapore. The company also provides a personalised interior design solution, which consumers can receive by heading down to its showrooms at 61 Ubi Rd 1, Oxley Bizhub, #01-31, S(408727), and 30 Loyang Way, #06-02/03/04, S(508769), for inspiration and wallpaper installation services. There is also an in-house designer to offer interior décor suggestions. Internationally acclaimed brands, such as Toli, Arte, and Mooi, have worked alongside Honpo to deliver unique materials and finishings for residential and industrial renovation projects.

LUX creates bold new workplace training designed to stop everyday sexism in the workplace

  • LUX launches its first interactive training programme fueled by real-life consumer insights and co-designed with DE&I behaviour change experts to counter sexism in the workplace.
  • LUX Allies Against Workplace Sexism is a training programme that will equip both men and women with skills to identify and stand up against everyday sexism and ultimately become allies.

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 14 December 2022 – With a mission to power women with the strength to express their femininity without fear of everyday sexist judgments, Unilever’s global beauty brand LUX takes another leap forward in fighting everyday sexism at the workplace. This month LUX has launched the Allies e-learning programme – a free global training resource for companies to rally colleagues to come together and stand against everyday sexism.

Everyday sexism exists regardless of profession, country, or cultural background. This is even more prevalent and ingrained in developing and emerging countries. Despite greater advocacy for gender equality since the #MeToo movement took off, sexism and sexual harassment continue to be persistent issues that plague society today. LUX’s ‘Finding Strength in Beauty’ 2021 whitepaper supported this view and discovered that women regularly face up to 17 types of judgements, 70% of which are appearance-related with even 26% worried about being seen as overly successful at work.

Purpose built into its business model

LUX understands the daily plight of women and how much judgements can impact confidence. Being recognised as the 15th most chosen brand and the third most chosen beauty brand in the world by Kantar, the brand has the scale to make a difference for good in people’s lives. This has been reflected in its content, products and partnerships that have made a positive impact in the markets it operates in.

Led by Wunderman Thompson, the communications are rooted in real-life insights relevant to the audience in developing and emerging markets that LUX serves. The brand is behind award-winning and purpose-driven campaigns such as “In Her Shoes” and ‘UNSTOPPABLE“, which made waves in advocating for greater social inclusivity against sexism in the respective countries.

Today marks a new chapter for LUX through the creation of an e-training programme to give women and men the tools to call out and stop bad behaviour in the workplace. The course called ‘LUX Allies Against Workplace Sexism‘ has been designed with a DE&I behaviour change expert to counter sexism in the workplace. Furthermore, it was created specifically for emerging markets where patriarchal values and the traditional mindset about gender roles are entrenched in society.

Severine Vauleon, Global Brand Lead at LUX, says, “Beauty can be a powerful source of strength and self-confidence for women. At the workplace in particular, confidence and self-belief can make a huge difference in a woman’s job satisfaction and career trajectory. As a brand that touches the lives of millions of women worldwide, we want to be an enabler that supports women’s confidence and authenticity to thrive, rather than see them self-edit and wither. As such, we will continue to help women everywhere fight casual sexism especially related to their experience, at home, in the workplace and in wider society.”

In today’s climate, personal values drive consumer preferences. Through the brand, LUX is taking action to drive positive change. Often, it is the small and seemingly harmless instances of everyday sexism that are working to maintain and normalise inequality between men and women.

“We intend to use our extensive breadth to help all women worldwide to be given the freedom to express themselves and allow their authentic selves to shine through. LUX shall continue to create blockbuster ads and tools to spark conversation around everyday sexism and empower people to stop it.”

LUX Allies Against Workplace Sexism programme is structured as three module pillars – AWARE, ACT and ALLY. It confronts participants with everyday scenarios in the workplace where women may face casual sexist remarks from colleagues – whether male or female – and simple yet effective actions to call out these belittling comments. Equipping them with the knowledge and tools through the Allies programme, LUX ultimately seeks to empower and inspire participants to become an ally against everyday sexism and put a stop to it, both at and beyond the workplace.

To drive home this agenda, LUX worked with organisational and behavioural scientist and indigenous rights advocate, Matthew J Yazzie, who specialises in workplace discrimination and launched Allies, an e-learning resource. Matthew played a pivotal role in creating the content schedule for the modules. Part of the modules, he sheds light on casual sexism being often built into everyday phrases, and how it can sometimes be difficult to notice how some words can hide biased judgements.

The modules uses short-form videos to highlight seemingly casual remarks that disempower individuals based on gender stereotypes and share how simple yet effective actions to call out belittling comments can make a difference.

From today, anyone can access the Allies programme at no charge via LUX’s website and complete the modules to be a certified ally against sexism. Encouragingly, individuals who completed the Allies modules shared that they have become more cognizant of the underlying gendered biases in everyday conversations at the workplace and beyond. This gives people greater confidence to stand their ground and call out such behaviour, especially if they feel supported by a network of allies around them.

Nicolas Tran Dinh, Global Digital & Masterbrand Lead at LUX, shares, “Women, just like men, want to live in a world where they have equal opportunities to be their best selves. The first step in reducing the pressures of everyday sexism that women face starts with us. We must be more aware of our actions and be allies rather than bystanders to support women to rise above daily judgements. This is how we can build a world where men and women are celebrated equally and why we are providing this training as a free resource for all companies.”

Echoing his comments, Hinoti Joshi, Global Business Director, from Wunderman Thompson, Singapore, who leads LUX communications, adds, “This is the next step in our Purpose journey towards our end goal of putting an end to everyday sexism. WT APAC and Unilever staff will be actively using it as part of our training to help empower and inspire a community of women and allies to speak up and hold their truth for their beliefs.”

Allies may be accessed at https://www.lux.com/arabia/en/luxalliesagainstsexism.html.

Successful Conclusion of “Hong Kong Smart Design, Sparkle in Greater Bay Area 2022”

Leading Hong Kong Original Designs to the Mainland market

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 13 December 2022 – Organized by The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association(HKEA), with Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the Lead Sponsor, the flagship business platform “Hong Kong Smart Design, Sparkle in Greater Bay Area 2022” (the Project) held its physical Closing Ceremony today (13 December). Mr. Raistlin Lau, JP, Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Mr. Victor Tsang, Head of CreateHK, among representatives of the Hong Kong original design brands participated in the Project, commended the Project for the results achieved over the past few months. The participants also exchanged their forward-looking and in-depth views on the further promotion of Hong Kong original design.

Speaking at the Closing Ceremony, Mr. Raistlin Lau, JP, Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism appreciated the efforts of The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association in organizing the Project and its remarkable achievements.

The Project, which was launched in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, provides a one-stop business platform to showcase Hong Kong’s original designs to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) market. Since its launch in April this year, the Project has successfully recruited nearly 30 Hong Kong design brands and their some 70 quality design products for showcasing in a number of promotional and exchange activities targeting the GBA market. These activities included the staging of a series of pop-up stores in shopping malls as well as roving exhibitions in cultural and creative bookstores and design shops in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Guangzhou and Foshan – key cities of the GBA – since early August; online participation in the “132nd China Import and Export Fair” (a.k.a Canton Fair) in October; and setting up of an online sales channel on the cross-border e-commerce platform “JD.com” to promote the participating Hong Kong original design products. Through its online and offline product exhibitions, the Project has reached a cumulative total of over 830,000 consumers as of November, enabling more Hong Kong designs to make their names in the key cities of the GBA.

In addition, the Project organized the “Hong Kong Creative Industries Summit: Energize Borderless Opportunities” on 3 August with sharing by industry leaders on their winning business strategies and insights to help industry players with vision to expand into more GBA cities better understand the business environment in the region.

Mr. Eric Sun, Chairman of The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association, said “‘‘Hong Kong Smart Design, Sparkle in Greater Bay Area 2022’ would not have been a success without the support of CreateHK and the active participation of the industry. When many companies’ businesses were suspended due to the epidemic, we worked with our full effort to organize promotional activities and assist brands in developing online sales channels to give participating brands and products more exposure, and provide a direct buying channel for Mainland consumers to buy Hong Kong’s quality original design products. With Mainland’s 14th Five-Year Plan actively promoting the development of the GBA and the strong support of the HKSAR Government, the future of the region is limitless. The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association, SMEs, and the design industry will work together to seize the opportunities and harness the creative spirit of Hong Kong as part of the region, creating a win-win situation.”

Immediately after the Closing Ceremony, a number of sharing sessions were held today with leading figures from the trade including Ms. Nithia Law, Deputy General Manager of Hi Lifestyle Grandview Mall, Mr. Du Jun, Chairman of Jiangsu D&E International Creative Industries Co. Ltd., Ms. Liu Chunyan, Marketing Director of ibuychem.com, and representative of Cultural & Creative Project of China Import and Export Fair provided their unique insights from the perspective of Mainland professional buyers, facilitating Hong Kong SMEs to better understand and hence connecting with the needs of the Mainland consumer market, thereby promoting more collaboration between Hong Kong and Mainland enterprises. Some local designers and brand representatives who participated in the Project including Ms. Irene Yeung, Founder and Designer of Derangedsign Co. Ltd., Ms. Cathy Jim, Director of RHT Industries Ltd., and Mr. Will Ng, Chief Designer of Zasia Ltd. were also invited to share their experiences and challenges in doing business in the Mainland.

Before the Project is officially wrapped up, two more finale events will be held in December, including a product showcase at United Bookstore in Shenzhen, and introducing 18 Hong Kong original design brands and their nearly 50 design products at the first “Design Shenzhen” physical exhibition. Both events aim to provide multiple channels that can showcase the unique appeal, strengths, and creativity of Hong Kong original design brands to the Mainland consumers.
