The Economist Group and The Nippon Foundation launch a new initiative to promote ocean health

TOKYO, JAPAN – Media OutReach – 3 March 2021 – Back to Blue, a new initiative from The Economist Group and The Nippon Foundation, launches today at the 8th annual World Ocean Summit. With an initial focus on ocean pollution, the three-year collaboration is a response to the escalating challenges posed by plastic pollution and, less visibly, pollution from nutrients and chemical contaminants that are damaging ocean life and ecosystems, and in turn human health. The programme, now under development, has been supported by findings from a Back to Blue global survey* which place plastic pollution (59.6% of respondents) and chemical pollution (39.1%) as the top two concerns, followed by climate change (31.1%).

The opportunity to embark on original research, stimulate fresh dialogue and explore new solutions to the vexing problems posed by pollution in the ocean is motivating both organizations. The Economist Group, through its World Ocean Initiative and World Ocean Summit, has been fostering a global conversation on the greatest challenges facing the seas. The Nippon Foundation–with its diverse programmes building and nurturing ocean networks, research and professionals–has a global reputation for championing ocean science and health. The Back to Blue initiative brings together two organisations that share a common understanding of the need for evidence-based approaches and solutions to the pressing issues faced by the ocean, offering a powerful platform from which to accelerate momentum for improving ocean health.

During remarks at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two organisations, Yohei Sasakawa, chairman of The Nippon Foundation, warned that “we are much aware of the land-based problems that occur around us[…]; however, when it comes to understanding the multifaceted problems of the ocean that covers 70% of the earth surface, I believe that our understanding is still very poor. This is already a threat to human security for every individual on this planet.”

Echoing these sentiments, Lord Deighton, chairman of The Economist Group, said: “We [at The Economist Group] have also developed our own passion for the ocean. We held our first World Ocean Summit in 2012, after we had argued in the newspaper that the seas were in trouble, and that human activities were having a profound impact on ocean health. A decade or so later we are more committed than ever to our vision of an ocean in robust health and with a vital economy. The ocean is too big to fail.”

Speaking on the Back to Blue initiative at the launch event, Charles Goddard, editorial director at The Economist Group, noted that “defining and heading towards a pollution-free ocean is an enormous challenge, as we are already seeing in the many extraordinary efforts to address plastic pollution. We hope Back to Blue can contribute vital new knowledge and perspectives on contaminants in the ocean, and to the global architecture of engagement needed to address them. The urgency is very real.”

* In January 2021, The Economist Group, in cooperation with The Nippon Foundation, undertook two related surveys–one of industry and public-sector executives, the other of the general public (global citizens)–to better understand their views and priorities around key ocean issues. The survey was conducted to provide a reference point for the Back to Blue initiative among the global audience we expect to be engaging, as well as to seek feedback on the direction and relevance of the initiative, and to help us gauge progress towards our goals.

New shorter-term and micro-insurance products enter Singapore to combat increased risk aversion: Aon Global Market Insights Report

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 3 March 2021Aon plc (NYSE: AON), a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement and health solutions, has released its Q4 2020 Global Market Insights Report, which indicates increased insurance pricing across most business lines globally. In Singapore, the reopening of businesses and optimism over the vaccination programme has boosted investor confidence and an economic rebound is expected in 2021. Besides pricing increases, the Singapore insurance market is moderately challenged when compared to the global market.

Aon’s report finds that more than capital and capacity, macro factors and events such as supply chain vulnerability, lower investment yields, ongoing economic uncertainty, social inflation and weather volatility will drive risk complexity in 2021.

Brent Clawson, Chief Broking Officer, Commercial Risk Solutions, Asia, Aon, said, “The impact of claims related to COVID-19 for businesses and insurers has not yet been fully seen. The fluid situation of business interruption driven by regulations, litigation and the macro-economic environment will continue to bring complexities to the fore in 2021. COVID-19 has also resulted in claims activity in other lines of coverage, with numbers and costs likely to increase.”

In Asia, pricing has seen an overall increase. However, the extent of increase varies by several factors such as business line, sector, geography, renewal vs. new business and whether the insurer is local.

Singapore trends:

As the COVID-19 situation evolves, a tight market is likely to continue, at least through the first half of 2021.

  • Coverage is stable; however, pandemic exclusions have become common.
  • Credit insurance has become more difficult and is under heightened scrutiny.
  • New shorter-term and micro-insurance products are coming into the Singapore market.

Market dynamics of key products in Singapore:

  • Auto: Following a slump during the Circuit Breaker period in the first half of 2020, businesses are re-opening and ridership of private hire fleets is now slowly increasing. As a result of many months of reduced ridership and fewer vehicles on the road, insurers experienced favourable claims performance in 2020. In anticipation of a return to normal traffic patterns once restrictions are lifted, market pricing is seeing a modest increase.
  • Casualty: Pricing and deductibles are increasing in this field. Many insurers are imposing blanket exclusions for communicable disease as well as data risk and cyber threats. Reinsurance costs are escalating, which are likely to keep primary rates elevated.
  • Employer’s Liability / Workers Compensation: Premiums are increasing, mainly driven by changes in the new Work Injury Compensation Act, 2019 (WICA). In addition to increased benefit levels, insurers now have the added responsibility of assessing Permanent Incapacities. Some insurers have appointed third-party providers to make these assessments, thereby increasing costs for this class of insurance. Insurers are becoming more stringent in their underwriting requirements and approach in an effort to balance underwriting guidelines with WICA requirements.

The Ministry of Manpower (MoM) has mandated a minimum level of the required information, which has resulted in more accurate insurer ratings and premium changes for many insureds. Some Employer’s Liability insurers are scaling back coverage related to Contingent Liability, especially for contractors and subcontractors. As insurers seek more clarity following recent changes to WICA, renewal terms have changed in ways that have not been experienced in previous updates to the Act.

  • Financial Lines: Insurers are leveraging technical pricing approaches and rationalising capacity at the portfolio level leading to increased premium and decreased capacity. Insurers are being conservative in their scrutiny of insureds’ financial positions, operations (including return-to-work policies), controls and governance. Companies that are in industries severely impacted by COVID-19 and/or have weak financials will likely see narrowing coverage with little room for negotiation.
  • Property: Insurers are imposing Communicable Disease Exclusions, withdrawing Contingent Business Interruption coverage and imposing Cyber exclusions on Property Damage and Business Interruption (PDBI). Deductibles are increasing, particularly for Business Interruption for Singapore risk locations. Insurers continue to reduce capacity as they focus on diversification of risk, and a further reduction in capacity is expected as reinsurance rates continue to increase.

Insurers are reacting to recent losses and uncertainty by focusing their appetite and withdrawing capacity. In some cases, new terms and conditions are being required to renew coverage. With the centralisation of the underwriting function and an increased focus on profitability, insurers are no longer looking at risk through the same local lens.

Insureds are also more mindful of pricing given the current economy. Many insureds, especially those whose budgets are not aligned with current market conditions, are exploring alternatives and trade-offs (e.g., increasing deductibles) to offset proposed premium increases.

Cynthia Beveridge, President, Aon Broking, Commercial Risk Solutions, Aon, said: “There is general optimism that the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine will have a positive economic impact. Along with the introduction of additional capacity into the market, this may result in an easing in the second half of 2021 of some of the challenges experienced in the risk and insurance environment during 2020. That said, risk complexity will continue to be impacted by supply chain vulnerability, a virtual workforce, ongoing economic uncertainty, social inflation and weather volatility. We expect heightened underwriter scrutiny on supply chain transparency and resilience, COVID-19 and communicable disease safety measures and cyber threat resilience. Pricing and coverage terms will continue to address these concerns.”

Cordlife launches OptiQ: A first-of-its-kind corneal lenticule banking service in Singapore

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 3 March 2021 Cordlife Group Limited, a consumer healthcare company announced today that the Ministry of Health has issued a license permitting the Company to launch OptiQ, a corneal lenticule banking service in Singapore. Cordlife is the first company in Asia to let patients undergoing refractive eye surgery using lenticule extraction method (e.g. SMILE) for myopia or astigmatism to cryopreserve their corneal lenticules for potential treatment of presbyopia and other ocular conditions in the future.

The technology behind OptiQ was invented by Professors Donald Tan and Jodhbir Mehta from Singapore Eye Research Institute (“SERI”), the research arm of Singapore National Eye Centre (“SNEC”).

Ms Tan Poh Lan, Cordlife’s Group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, said: “Cordlife has accumulated 20 years of experience in the banking of biological materials so offering the storage of corneal lenticules is a natural extension of our services.”

Myopia is an extremely common refractive error in Singapore with 82 percent of the 20-year-olds suffering from this condition — one of the highest in East Asia.

Newer flapless refractive surgical procedures, such as SMILE can correct myopia or astigmatism by extracting a tiny lenticule from each eye of the patient using a femtosecond laser. Presently, corneal lenticules extracted during such surgeries are routinely thrown away. Early animal and human studies have shown that corneal lenticules may help to correct presbyopia and hyperopia (longsightedness) as well as certain ocular conditions.

Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which the eyes gradually lose the ability to focus on objects clearly at close range. Currently, patients treat presbyopia using reading glasses, contact lenses, or artificial inlay implantation but this last method carries risks such as corneal inflammation, scarring and haze. By implanting corneal lenticules, such risks can be reduced and the rate of rejection will also be marginal due to inherent superior biocompatibility. Once lenticule implantation is approved as a standard of care, patients who have stored their own lenticules will have additional vision correction options.

“Almost everyone will have presbyopia after the age of 40. We believe this advancement in ophthalmology can help a lot of people and even bring healthcare in Singapore to the next level,” Professor Mehta of SERI added.

OptiQ is now available at SNEC and some eye clinics offering refractive eye surgery using lenticule extraction method in Singapore.

Teledyne SP Devices Announces 12-bit Digitizers with 7 Gbyte/s Sustained Data Transfer Rate

Flexible platform for acquisition and custom digital signal processing

Linköping, Sweden – Media OutReach – 9 February 2021 Teledyne SP Devices, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), today announced the release of ADQ32 and ADQ33 — a fourth-generation modular data acquisition boards optimized for high-throughput applications. The combination of on-board open field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and high-speed data streaming makes them ideal even for the most computationally demanding applications.

The dual-channel 12-bit digitizers support synchronous sampling at 2.5 gigasamples per second (GS/s) per channel for ADQ32 and 1 GS/s per channel for ADQ33 and feature an open Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale KU040 field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The digitizers are streamlined for high-volume applications and are therefore suitable for integration by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in areas such as swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToF MS), and distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS). ADQ33 is not export-controlled and therefore does not require any license.

Custom application-specific digital signal processing (DSP) can be performed in real-time in the on-board FPGA to characterize signals and extract valuable information. It can also be used to perform data reduction so that the output rate matches the 7 Gbyte/s sustained transfer capacity of the PCI Express interface. The data can then be post-processed either on the central processing unit (CPU) of the host PC, or transferred via peer-to-peer to a graphics processing unit (GPU).

This architecture offers great flexibility and allows the designer to use the most suitable type of processing resource for a given task. Examples of application-specific DSP include fast-Fourier transform (FFT) and k-space remapping for SS-OCT, and waveform averaging and zero suppression for ToF MS.

In addition to the high streaming rate and computational flexibility, the ADQ32 also offers excellent analog performance in terms of the effective number of bits (ENOB), spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and more. Hardware trigger, selection of internal/external clock, and general-purpose input/output (GPIO) simplify system-level integration. Please refer to the datasheet for full specifications.
