Affordable Access in Africa: GSMA and Handset Affordability Coalition Pioneering Members Identify Six African Countries to Pilot Affordable $40 Smartphones

BARCELONA, Spain, March 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The GSMA today announced that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda have been identified by the GSMA Handset Affordability Coalition for initial pilots to introduce affordable 4G smartphones.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the GSMA, the G6 African operators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), formalises collaboration to pilot affordable entry-level 4G smartphones in Africa in 2026. The pilots build on the minimum requirements for low-cost 4G devices unveiled at MWC Kigali in 2025.

The GSMA Handset Affordability Coalition aims to lower the cost of entry-level smartphones worldwide and accelerate digital inclusion in markets where affordability remains a key barrier.

However, the current surge in the global cost of memory prices is making it increasingly difficult to attain a US$30 – US$40 price range required to unlock mass adoption. Against this economic context it has become even more important to reduce or eliminate taxes and import duties on entry-level 4G smartphones.

Vivek Badrinath, Director General of the GSMA, said: “Affordable smartphones enable digital and financial inclusion, economic opportunity and innovation. 3.1 billion people have mobile coverage but are not connected to the mobile internet. Together with the G6 group of leading African operators, we are sending a clear demand signal to bring low-cost 4G devices to market. In a global context of rising memory costs, governments have an important role in bridging the usage gap. Removing taxes and import duties on entry-level 4G smartphones will be critical to achieving scale.”

A Vast Untapped Opportunity

Africa has one of the world’s largest mobile internet usage gaps. Millions live within broadband coverage but remain offline, with handset affordability consistently cited as the biggest barrier to adoption. Affordable 4G smartphones at scale could bring tens of millions of people online.

Enabling Local AI Innovation

The impact of rising memory costs extends beyond connectivity. Memory-intensive technologies are essential for on-device AI, local language processing and the growth of regional tech ecosystems.

Against this backdrop, the GSMA-led AI Language Models Initiative is advancing scalable, locally relevant AI models. The Africa Pavilion at MWC26 will showcase a live demonstration of the first open Swahili reasoning model in collaboration with MeetKai Zambia, capable of browsing and translating online content to reduce language barriers to digital services.

Steven Zhao, delivering a keynote speech titled “Moving Towards the All Intelligence Era, Net5.5G Leads Intelligent IP Innovation”

Steven Zhao, Vice President of Huawei’s Data Communication Product Line, said, “To embrace the All Intelligence era, WBBA is promoting the in-depth integration of networks and AI based on Net5.5G, and Huawei has upgraded IP bearer networks across three dimensions—security resilience, multi-dimensional awareness, and network autonomy. These efforts empower carriers to build a Net5.5G intelligent IP network foundation to safeguard service experience, accelerate monetization, and enhance efficiency, leading a new chapter of intelligent connectivity.”

Global practices: Net5.5G moving from standards to real-world business value

Leading carriers and industry players showcased their latest Net5.5G practices. France’s Orange Group turns its networks into an AI-ready platform, leveraging high bandwidth, intelligent and agile, efficient, trusted and reliable transport and access networks. CTM in Macao (China) built an intelligent bearer network with Net5.5G AI WAN. It leveraged AI training and inference-driven perception to identify encrypted video traffic and enable precision marketing and application-level experience assurance, reducing customer churn and boosting the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). Meanwhile, IGA in Türkiye leveraged AI-driven decision-making to reduce three-runway scheduling wait times by 20%. Powered by a reliable network capacity that ensures safe and real-time visualized baggage handling, the airport harnessed digital intelligence to enhance aviation safety and deliver an exceptional network experience for passengers. IGA has become a shining example for efficient, eco-friendly, and resilient development among global hub airports.

Looking ahead, WBBA calls on global industry organizations to deepen collaboration and drive innovations in technology standards, industry policies, and commercial practices for intelligent evolution to Net5.5G. Huawei will continue to work with WBBA and global partners, leveraging Net5.5G standards and cutting-edge intelligent solutions to promote industry prosperity.

GameChange BOS Transformers Achieve Short-Circuit Certification, Validating Resilience for Critical Grid Infrastructure

Dynamic testing at CPRI confirms capability to withstand extreme grid conditions for large-scale power projects

NORWALK, Conn., March 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — GameChange BOS, the transformer division of GameChange Energy Technologies, announces its successful completion of Dynamic Short Circuit Type Testing for its high-capacity, multi-winding transformers. The rigorous type test, conducted at the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in Bhopal, India, validates the company’s manufacturing readiness to supply grid-compliant, resilient transformers for renewable energy and utility applications worldwide.

GameChange BOS Factory
GameChange BOS Factory

The destructive short-circuit test assesses a transformer’s ability to withstand dynamic mechanical impacts due to short circuits, and extreme electrical conditions that can occur during grid disturbances. GameChange BOS’s 17.6 MVA, 5-winding Inverter Duty Transformer (IDT) successfully endured nine consecutive asymmetrical shots at 100% of requested current for 0.25 seconds each—confirming its resilience against the types of severe electrical events that can cause catastrophic equipment failure.

Conducted in accordance with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards, the comprehensive testing program included:

  • Routine measurements per IEC 60076-1, performed both before and after short-circuit tests to verify electrical performance integrity
  • Short-circuit tests per IEC 60076-5, utilizing a three-phase supply on the high-voltage (HV) side with pre-set short-circuit on the low-voltage (LV) side
  • Dielectric routine testing per IEC 60076-3, including Applied Voltage (AV) and Induced Voltage Withstand (IVW) tests conducted before and after short-circuit events
  • Sound level determination in no-load conditions per IEC 60076-10
  • Physical inspection following complete transformer un-tanking to visually examine internal active parts, in compliance with IEC 60076-5 Clause 4.2.7.4-a

With capacity for transformers up to 138 kV and 50 MVA (with planned expansion to 345 kV and 300 MVA), the company provides fast delivery timelines at a time when traditional transformer lead times remain extended. The company has already surpassed 190 medium-voltage transformer orders, with strong demand driven by renewable energy project timelines, Safe Harbor qualification requirements, and customers seeking to mitigate Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) supply chain risks.

“This certification represents a significant milestone in proving our transformers’ reliability under the most demanding real-world conditions,” said Phillip Vyhanek, CEO of GameChange BOS. “This testing validates that GameChange BOS transformers are built to perform when it matters most for our clients.”

About GameChange BOS

GameChange BOS delivers Balance of Systems (BOS) solutions, including transformers for Renewable Energy, BESS, Utilities, C&I, Data Center and other applications. With a focus on technical excellence, we design and manufacture products that meet the highest industry standards through extensive research, development, and rigorous testing. Our best-in-class facilities and advanced manufacturing processes enable us to provide reliable, innovative solutions that drive efficiency and performance in the markets we serve.
