Displaced Xayaboury Folk to Get Compensation from Hydro Project

Local residents who had to leave their homes to make way for the construction of a dam on the Nam Ngum river in Ngeun district, Xayaboury province,

will receive compensation, the Pathetlao Daily reported yesterday.

Authorities assessed the situation in January this year, concluding that 250 households in Thong, Namthon, Phadaeng and Kok-ngiew villages were eligible for compensation by the hydropower project.
Donsavang and Pakngum villages and about 651 hectares of forest were also affected.

The authorities will be responsible for financing the building of new houses, providing new farmland and building new infrastructure for the displaced villagers.
