ASEAN Youth’s Role Promoted in Laos

ASEAN Youth representatives have agreed to promote ongoing cooperation and the enhancement of the role of ASEAN youth in Vientiane on Tuesday during the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits in Laos.

The ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with the Representatives of ASEAN Youth 2016 took place at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane on Tuesday and was chaired by the Prime Minister of theLaoPDR and ASEAN Chair 2016, Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith.

The interface, one of the annual sideline events of the ASEAN Summit, was also attended by ASEAN Heads-of- State and government, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the representatives of ASEAN youth, two from each ASEAN Member State.

The purpose of this interface is to exchange views with and seek guidance and support from the ASEAN leaders to ensure the effective participation and enhancement of the role of ASEAN youth in contributing to the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 as well as ASEAN Community building in accordance with the set goals.

The youth representatives from the Lao PDR as the ASEAN Chair 2016 together with fellow ASEAN youth delegates delivered the message of ASEAN youth to the ASEAN Leaders.

This year’s ASEAN youth theme is “Forging together towards ASEAN 2025: The Role of ASEAN Youth in Contributing to Promote Cultural Heritage Cooperation.” During the interface, the ASEAN leaders have taken note of the important role and active contributions of ASEAN youth, including those towards ASEAN Community building throughout the past years and encouraged ASEAN Youth to continue enhancing their efforts to constructively and responsibly contribute to socio-economic development.

The protection, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage is one of eight priorities introduced by the Lao PDR as the ASEAN Chair 2016, aiming to successfully implement the ASEAN Strategic Plan for Culture and Arts 2016-2025 and other youth-related outcome documents adopted by the leaders.
