Laos Going Green, Aims to Plant 20 Million Saplings

In a commendable effort to restore 70 percent of forest coverage by 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry aims to farm over 20,000 hectares of tree saplings.

In prior years, Vientiane has planted over 2.7 million seedlings on nearly 400 hectares, with an estimated 90 percent survival rate. The majority of trees have been planted along both sides of the 450 year road and include rosewood, teak, eucalyptus, rubber, fruit and ornamental trees.

According to the Director of Agriculture and Forestry Department, Mr Sousath Xayakhoumman, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoAF) has been closely working with each District Agriculture and Forestry Divisions, and have organized for over 20 million saplings to be planted for the upcoming National Arbour Day and Children’s Day.

Officials and each District Agriculture and Forestry Division also want to encourage the public and private plant nurseries to support the planting of young trees.

Vientiane Capital aims to plant over 500,000 seedlings to be grown on 300 hectares.
