Police Arrest Man Who Robbed Two Women at Gunpoint in September

This Week

Vientiane Police said on Monday they had arrested one of the two thieves who stole a motorbike from two women in Xaythany district in September.

According to Lieutenant General Soulivanh Keomanivong, after receiving a report from the victims in September, police coordinated with relevant authorities to follow up and track down the two criminals. The incident was also recorded on CCTV and went viral on social media.

The authorities managed to apprehend 22-year-old Mr. Phaksana or Na, a resident of Xaythany district, Phonhaikham Village in October. However, his accomplice, 26-year-old Mr. Sivilay, managed to escape. The announcement of the arrest was made by the police this week.

Mr. Phaksana confessed during an interrogation that he and his friend were at a restaurant in Xaythany district when they noticed two women who were leaving the establishment.

He revealed that the two of them followed the women to the premises of their rented house and robbed them. They were able to steal one motorcycle and LAK 4.9 million (USD 282.85) from the victims.

He also said that he had sold the stolen motorcycle and shared half the money with his accomplice then fled to another province to escape arrest. He was nabbed when he returned to Vientiane Capital.

Last month, another resident of Xaythany district shared a story on social media about his encounter with an elderly man who appeared to need assistance but ended up attacking and robbing him.

Residents in Laos have taken to social media to voice their concern about the rising crime rate in Laos, especially in Vientiane Capital, and urged police to double down on efforts to apprehend offendors.
