Vietnam’s Internet Speed Affected by Undersea Cable Fault

Due to Monday’s technical issues with APG’s undersea connection and the ongoing repairs to two additional undersea cables, Vietnam’s internet speed will continue to be poor in the coming days.

An internet service provider in Vietnam reported that the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG), which connects Vietnam with other Asian nations, experienced technical issues early in the morning on Monday.

The problem was eventually detected on the S6 cable segment near the Hong Kong landing station. Currently, neither the particular cause nor any intended solutions have been communicated to Vietnam’s Internet service providers.

Additionally, undersea cables for Asia America Gateway (AAG) and Asia Africa Europe 1 (AAE-1) are also yet to be repaired.

All of the data on the AAE-1 line has been lost since the end of November due to a shunt failure at the S1H cable section, but the AAG cable has experienced faults in some sections since June as well. An undersea cable’s most common failure is a shunt fault, which could be brought about by anchors, fishing boats, powerful ocean currents, or even marine life.

Operations on the AAE-1 cable started in July 2017, enabling Vietnam to connect with Europe and the Middle East, as also Hong Kong and Singapore.

The 10,400 km (6,460 mi) long APG cable under the Pacific ocean connects mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Six underwater cable networks and a 120-gigabit overland link provide internet connectivity to Vietnam, where 72% of the population is online. Affected internet connection due to faulty undersea cables is not uncommon in Vietnam.

According to the Vietnam Internet Association, ISPs in Vietnam are already accustomed to this, thus effects on Internet connections should be confined and only noticeable at specific times.
