During the New Year celebration period, 26 people lost their lives in road accidents across Laos.
As per recent reports, 190 road accidents took place between 29 December to 3 January in the country. The accidents injured 311 people, claimed the lives of 26, and caused damage to a total of 323 vehicles.
Vientiane Capital saw the highest number of road accidents at 26 and five deaths while Savannakhet saw 22 accidents which claimed the lives of five people. Luang Prabang had 19 road accidents and Bolikhamxay had 14 as well.
The main cause of the accidents was driving under the influence of alcohol.
This was after the Head of the Police Department, Colonel Kongsy Souvannatoum urged residents to follow road safety and traffic protocols last Tuesday.
He said this week that although the police had enforced strict measures during New Year Celebration to ensure safe and orderly traffic movement, some travelers still took the rules lightly, and indulged in speeding, drunk driving, and suddenly changing direction when driving.
However, the number of accidents and deaths reported during this recent New Year celebration is less than last year’s which saw 33 deaths and 197 road accidents.
