Cambodian Prime Minister to Visit Laos Amid New Election in Cambodia

This Week

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen will pay an official visit to Laos from 13 to 15 February amid the upcoming Cambodian general election in July this year.

KPL reports that Prime Minister Hun Sen will visit Laos in response to the invitation of his Lao counterpart, recently-elected Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

The Cambodian prime minister will be accompanied by a delegation of senior officials, with the visit expected to enhance the friendship, traditional solidarity, and comprehensive and long-lasting strategic partnership between Laos and Cambodia, according to the Lao Ministry of Affairs.

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s visit to Laos comes as the neighboring country begins preparations for its seventh quinquennial election, in which the country’s leader is expected to run for another five-year term.

However, in 2022, Hun Sen announced his public support for his oldest son, Royal Cambodian Army Commander Lieutenant General Hun Manet, 44, as his successor.
