Thongloun Sisoulith, the President of Laos will participate in the opening ceremony of the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in May, said Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen.
Mr. Hun Sen made the announcement on Tuesday while presiding over the graduation ceremony for over 2,000 Human Resource University students at the Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Center.
He said that during Mr. Thongloun’s visit to Cambodia in May, he would also attend the biennial multi-sporting competition.
The Cambodian Prime Minister added that he has sent invitations to Vietnamese leaders to attend the opening ceremony as well.
According to the Khmer Times, this will be Cambodia’s first time hosting both the SEA Games and the ASEAN Para Games. The games have been united and dubbed “Cambodia 2023” to represent unity, diversity, and equality. Cambodia 2023’s slogan is “Sport: Living in Peace.”
Last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen made an official visit to Laos after receiving an invitation from Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. During the visit, both leaders signed important agreements and discussed bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, border cooperation, tourism exchange, connectivity, and extradition.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbende also paid a three-day visit to Cambodia recently as part of their Indo-Pacific trip, which aimed to strengthen political and economic connections with Southeast Asia while also boosting German-Cambodian relations.
