Ukraine Ambassador Briefs Media in Laos on One Year Anniversary of War

Lao journalists attended a media briefing hosted by the US Embassy on Friday providing an update on the situation in Ukraine following one year of war.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr. Gaman Oleksandr, provided information on the situation in Ukraine to journalists at the US Embassy’s American Center in Vientiane Capital on Friday.

US Ambassador to Laos, Mr. Peter M. Haymond, and Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to Laos, Mr. Niall Leonard, hosted the event, which was also attended by ambassadors of Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, France, South Korea, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

At the briefing, Ambassador Gaman highlighted his country’s appeals for support, saying that his country would never yield to unprovoked aggression. He also said that his country hopes to receive support from all nations around the world

“We need every country’s support and assistance, including Laos,” said Ambassador Gaman.

He also stressed that the war is about more than just his own nation, maintaining that the sovereignty of all nations and global security remains at stake.

“This war must end with the triumph of international law and the UN Charter,” he said.

Addressing the recent visit of US President Joe Biden, Mr. Gaman expressed his gratitude to the United States and its allies for providing strong support to Ukraine.

For his part, US Ambassador Peter M. Haymond said that the US is continuing to support Ukraine, and that Ukraine has made good use of humanitarian and military assistance to date.

Journalists at the briefing questioned the Ukrainian Ambassador on areas such as post-war economic recovery and seaport closures.

Laos issued an official statement on the situation in Ukraine last year, encouraging all sides to maintain caution and seek a peaceful resolution through diplomatic means.
