Cambodian Ministry Plans Khmer Version of ChatGPT

This Week

Cambodia’s Digital Government Committee plans to make a Khmer language version of the popular artificial intelligence (AI) technology, ChatGPT, available to the public.

The country’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunications revealed that it has been using the AI chatbot technology to ease its daily workload for the past six months, Phnom Penh Post reports.

It is now holding discussions with the developers of the software on creating a Khmer language version.

ChatGPT is an AI Chatbot developed by OpenAI, launched in November 2022. The core function of the chatbot is to mimic human conversations, however, ChatGPT is versatile enough to write computer code, compose music, and even play simple video games.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunications said that ChatGPT has the ability to handle day-to-day tasks such as administrative work, human resource management, answering questions, writing articles, translating, and even coding – much like a virtual personal assistant.

The country’s Digital Government Committee is part of plans to turn Cambodia into a digital economy, streamlining public administration, advancing good governance, and improving public services.

A smart government would use digital technology to enact transparent reforms to develop an inclusive economy and digital society, according to Telecoms Minister Chea Vandeth, who said last year that people in all industries must be prepared to master the use of technology in their professional lives, including state institutions and public sector workers.

OpenAI has not yet made ChatGPT available to users in Laos.
