The weather bureau has forecast rain across Laos from today, with strong winds and thunderstorms set to wash away air pollution.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology had some good news today, issuing a forecast for rain across the country as early as this evening.
The central provinces, including Vientiane Capital, will have a 40% chance of rain, which could bring welcome relief from oppressive heat and choking smoke during the burning season.
The northern provinces of Phongsaly, Houaphanh, and Xieng Khouang are expected to see some storms and heavy rain, with temperatures ranging from 15 – 30 degrees.
Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, and Xayabory provinces will experience hot weather but will see strong winds with a 30% possibility of rainfall, and temperatures up to 30 degrees.
The southern provinces of Salavanh, Sekong, Attapeu, and Champasack also have rain in their forecasts, with hail and thunderstorms to come following highs of 38 degrees.
Air pollution has reached hazardous levels all around Laos as out-of-control agricultural fires have spread to forests and national parks, causing massive amounts of smoke to cover parts of the country.
Residents have complained of sore eyes and sinuses, headaches, and shortness of breath, and have been desperately hoping for rain to clear the skies.
