Luang Namtha Reports Over 20,000 Land Titles Destroyed in 2024 Floods

This Week

Luang Namtha Province experienced severe flooding in 2024, leading to significant destruction, including the loss of 20,000 land titles, according to the provincial authorities.

The statistics were revealed during Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bounkham Vorachit’s mission to the province from 14-15 January. Her visit aimed to evaluate the disaster’s impact, provide assistance, and oversee the progress of natural resource and environmental initiatives.

The authorities also noted that the September 2024 flooding was the most severe in 45 years, heavily impacting Luang Namtha district, a key site for the systematic land registration project. The floods caused damages exceeding LAK 4 billion (approximately USD 183,000) and inflicted extensive harm to property and public infrastructure.

In response, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has offered financial support and plans to deploy technical teams to aid in recovery efforts. These teams will prioritize restoring damaged land records, repairing meteorological stations, and fixing water level gauges and other essential equipment to ensure operations can resume efficiently.
