Lao Woman Arrested for Smuggling 137,000 Ecstasy Pills at Thai Border

This Week

On 11 May, Thai authorities arrested a Lao woman attempting to enter Thailand at the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai Province for smuggling ecstasy pills worth approximately THB 55 million (USD 1.48 million).

Officers became suspicious of a bronze Toyota with Lao license plates attempting to cross the border, and requested to search the vehicle.

During the inspection, police discovered 137,000 ecstasy pills packed in 139 plastic bags. The pills came in various colors, including green, purple, and orange.

The suspect, identified only with her nickname Namwan, later confessed that she had been hired by another Lao national to deliver the drugs to a recipient at a shopping mall in Nong Khai in exchange for THB 10,000 (about USD 304).

The seized drugs and the suspect were handed over to the investigation team for further legal proceedings.
