Feasibility Study Begins for Boten–Nateuy Expressway, Highway Upgrades in Luang Namtha

This Week

A feasibility study for a proposed expressway linking the Boten International Checkpoint, on the border with China, to Nateuy in Luang Namtha Province has officially begun.

The project aims to connect inland regions with international markets and support Laos’ vision of becoming a land-linked nation.

The Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed on 27 October in Luang Namtha between the Provincial Administration and Lan Xang Bridge-Road Construction Sole Co., Ltd.

Under the agreement, the company will conduct a feasibility study for the proposed expressway, while also constructing, upgrading, and rehabilitating two key national roads in the province.

These include an 18-kilometer section of National Highway 13 North, from the Oudomxay provincial border to Boten, and a 28-kilometer stretch of National Road 13R, from the Nateuy T-junction to the Bouamphieng T-junction in Luang Namtha district.

According to Chanthachon Keolakhon, Head of the Bridge and Road Sector at the Luang Namtha Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, the agreement allows the company to survey the route, collect data, and carry out technical and economic analyses in accordance with national regulations.

Lan Xang Bridge-Road Construction Sole Co., Ltd. has 18 months to complete the feasibility study, with the possibility of a six-month extension.

Following the signing, the company is required to commence operations within 90 days and provide a USD 30,000 security deposit.

Once completed, the expressway is expected to enhance regional connectivity, promote trade and tourism, and drive socio-economic development in Luang Namtha Province and northern Laos.
