Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane will make an official visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) from 11 to 15 November at the invitation of his North Korean counterpart, Choe Son Hui.
The visit aims to strengthen long-standing bilateral friendship and commemorate two significant milestones, according to the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the 60th anniversary of the historic first meeting between former Lao leader Kaysone Phomvihane and North Korea’s then-President Kim Il Sung in Pyongyang on 28 October 1965, and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both countries.
During the visit, the Lao delegation will discuss expanding cooperation across multiple sectors and deepening bilateral ties.
This marks Thongsavanh’s second visit to North Korea in 2025. He previously accompanied President Thongloun Sisoulith’s delegation during the state visit on 7 to 8 October, where President Thongloun held official talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The October visit celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and reaffirmed decades of diplomatic cooperation through state ceremonies, a banquet, and visits to key Pyongyang landmarks, further strengthening cultural and political ties between the two nations.
