Laos-Vietnam Trade, Investment Surges as Leaders Eye USD 5 Billion Target

This Week

Trade between Laos and Vietnam reached USD 2.6 billion in the first ten months of 2025, a 50 percent rise from last year.

These numbers were presented at the 48th meeting of the Laos–Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee on Bilateral Cooperation between Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and his Vietnamese counterpart Phạm Minh Chính on 4 December.

According to the officials, Vietnam’s presence in Laos is significant, with 267 active projects worth USD 5.63 billion across clean energy, agriculture, mining, telecommunications, banking, and food processing.

Roadmap for 2026–2030 Targets Trade Growth, Workforce Development

Building on this momentum, both governments outlined strategies for 2026–2030.

They agreed to remove regulatory and operational barriers, improve infrastructure connectivity, and accelerate high-value projects such as the Vientiane–Hanoi expressway and expanded potash mining. Agriculture and rural development were also highlighted as strategic pillars to support trade and investment.

Human resource development remains another shared priority. Vietnam will continue offering 1,300 scholarships for Lao officials and students and send Vietnamese language teachers, ensuring workforce skills grow alongside the economy, the Vietnamese PM said.

Both sides said the new 2026–2030 roadmap aims to push bilateral trade toward USD 5 billion and lay the foundation for sustained economic cooperation.
