Laos Declares 19 December as National Alcohol Prohibition Day

This Week

The Lao government has declared 19 December of every year as Alcoholic Beverages Prohibition Day.

The authorities announced the move on 18 December as they ordered stronger enforcement of the Law on Alcoholic Control, first adopted in 2014. The move aims to protect public health and reduce harm linked to alcohol consumption.

On Alcohol Prohibition Day, drinking any beverage containing alcohol is banned nationwide.

Officials said the day is meant to raise awareness of the health and safety risks associated with alcohol and encourage greater compliance with the law.

Authorities also instructed provincial and city health offices, along with other agencies, to step up monitoring and enforcement from 2025 onward.

This includes checking the locations of alcohol-selling businesses to ensure they are not near schools, hospitals, government offices, religious sites, embassies, public parks, funeral homes, bus stations, petrol stations, sports fields, or factories. Businesses that violate the rules may face official warnings or further action.

Authorities said renewed enforcement of the 2014 Law will help improve public health, reduce drink-driving accidents, and lessen the social and economic impacts of alcohol use across Laos.
