Japan Grants USD 18.3 Million for Champasak Hospital Upgrade

This Week

Japan has provided grant aid worth JPY 2.865 billion (approximately USD 18.3 million) to support the Project for the Improvement of the Referral Hospital in Champasak.

Officials signed the grant agreement on 9 January in Vientiane Capital.

The 48-month project will construct a new central clinical building equipped with emergency and surgical departments and an Intensive Care Unit at Champasak Provincial Hospital, the main referral facility serving four southern provinces: Champasack, Attapeu, Salavanh, and Sekong.

Facility construction is expected to be completed within 36 months starting in January 2026.

The initiative will upgrade hospital infrastructure and procure modern medical equipment, with a one-year warranty period following installation. These enhancements aim to strengthen diagnostic and treatment systems, improve the regional patient referral system, and increase the efficiency of medical services for critically ill patients.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Laos’ Ministry of Health will jointly implement the project.
