Luang Prabang Restricts Roadside Commercial Setups During Lao New Year

This Week

Authorities in Luang Prabang have announced restrictions on temporary roadside structures and commercial setups along Sisavangvong Road during Lao New Year celebrations from 14 to 16 April.

According to the notice, the measures apply to businesses, residents, and individuals operating along Sisavangvong Road, the main route used for festival activities in the historic city.

Officials said tables, chairs, tents, water stations, and other temporary structures will not be allowed along the roadside during the three-day celebration. The installation of large sound systems, decorative lighting, advertising banners, and promotional flags along the road is also prohibited.

Authorities also said commercial activities set up directly along the roadside, including promotional or profit-driven events in front of shops or homes facing Sisavangvong Road, will not be permitted during the festival period.

The restrictions are intended to keep the main festival route clear, safe, and accessible for public celebrations, while preserving the traditional atmosphere of Lao New Year in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Residents may still celebrate in front of their homes with family members, provided gatherings do not block pedestrian walkways or occupy the roadway.

The notice warns that individuals or businesses violating the regulations may face warnings, fines, or temporary confiscation of sound equipment and other materials, with serious cases subject to legal action.

To enforce the measures, the city public security office, the Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, and village authorities in Xieng Mouane and Choumkhong have been assigned to monitor the area and ensure compliance.

Authorities are calling on residents and businesses to cooperate in maintaining order and safety during Lao New Year celebrations in the heritage city.
