Attapeu Cracks Down on Illegal Gold Mining, Fishing

This Week

Authorities in Attapeu Province announced the results of two enforcement operations carried out from 16 to 24 February in Xaysettha district, targeting illegal gold mining and destructive fishing practices.

Along the Sekong River, officials educated six households in Thalan village and confiscated eight gold-panning carpets used in illegal mining activities.

In a separate operation, seven individuals from four villages were detained for using electric shock devices and suction equipment. Authorities also seized three boats, three engines, and one homemade firearm.

Offenders were fined, required to attend education sessions, and signed commitments pledging not to repeat the violations.

The actions form part of a broader crackdown on activities threatening waterways and aquatic ecosystems.

Earlier in February, Samakkhixay district issued a notice banning unauthorized extraction of gravel, sand, and gold ore, as well as destructive fishing methods including electric shock devices, suction machines, explosives, and toxic chemicals.

Under Lao law, illegal gold mining carries fines of LAK 5–20 million (USD 232–930) or up to five years’ imprisonment. Destructive fishing can result in fines of up to LAK 50 million (USD 2,320) and up to three years’ imprisonment.

The crackdown aligns with a national directive issued by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone in March 2025, calling for stricter monitoring of river-based extraction activities nationwide.
