Laos is continuing efforts to strengthen access to health services while addressing barriers that can prevent some communities from receiving care.
On 14 August at the inaugural Inclusion Champion Awards 2026, held in Vientiane under the theme “Inclusive Community Health.” The event aims to recognize progress and discuss ways to make health services more accessible and responsive to community needs.
Phayvanh Keopaseuth, Vice Minister of Health, said the event provided a platform to highlight the importance of ensuring health services are accessible to all without discrimination based on factors including gender, age, disability, ethnicity or social and health status.
Recognizing Community Health Champions
Three individuals and organizations received recognized during the event for their contributions to inclusive health services.
Udon Souphavanh received recognition for his work in the HIV/AIDS response, Setthathirath Hospital was recognized for inclusive public health, and TestVTE was honored for its contribution to community wellness.
The awards highlighted the role of health providers, community organizations and individuals in helping people access services they can trust.
Over the past decade, cooperation between government agencies, civil society, development partners and communities has also helped raise awareness of health issues, improve access to essential services and address stigma and discrimination.
Strengthening Inclusive Health Services
The Ministry of Health continues to work toward more inclusive healthcare by responding to the different needs of communities. Efforts include strengthening sexual and reproductive health services, HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention and treatment, mental health support and harm reduction, while addressing barriers such as stigma, violence and discrimination.
Community participation remains an important part of these efforts, as people’s experiences can help health providers better understand barriers to care and identify practical ways to improve services.
