Phu Quoc International Airport in Kien Giang Province will undergo major expansion and upgrades to support the 2027 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Economic Leaders’ Week and boost local socio-economic and tourism development.
APEC is a regional forum established in 1989 to promote economic integration, sustainable growth, and trade liberalization among its 21 member economies.
Meanwhile, the Economic Leaders’ Week is APEC’s most prominent annual gathering, where heads of state, ministers, business leaders, and policymakers convene to discuss regional and global economic issues.
To accommodate the upcoming event, the airport will be expanded in two phases. The first phase of the expansion will span around 1,050 hectares, with an investment of over VND 26.5 trillion (USD 1.02 billion) and completion expected by 2030. The second phase, aimed at long-term development, will cost approximately VND 25.79 trillion (USD 1 billion) and is slated for completion by 2050.
As part of the project, the airport’s annual capacity will rise from 4 million to 18 million passengers by 2027, eventually reaching 50 million by 2050. A second runway, 3,500 meters long, will be built alongside the existing 3,300-meter one to accommodate wide-body aircraft and long-haul flights.
The airport apron will also undergo a significant expansion to support 70–80 parking positions, allowing the airport to welcome heads of state and dignitaries during APEC 2027 and other international events.
A new passenger terminal, designed by Singapore-based CPG Airport Consultants, will feature a phoenix-inspired design. The terminal will be equipped with modern amenities such as remote check-in, automated baggage handling, and biometric ID systems, streamlining entry and exit times.
Additionally, a separate VVIP terminal, designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, known for Phu Quoc’s iconic Cau Hon project, will take inspiration from the eagle ray to symbolize freedom and fluidity.
The expansion will also include a cargo terminal, radar systems, and supporting infrastructure.
In addition to the airport expansion, Phu Quoc is pushing forward with several key infrastructure projects in preparation for APEC 2027. These include a 10,000-square-meter Convention and Exhibition Centre, an international press center, APEC Square, and smart transport systems to ensure seamless connectivity between the airport and the city.
