China is set to introduce a new digital immigration system that allows foreign visitors to complete arrival forms online before entering the country.
Beginning 20 November, travelers can submit their entry information through multiple platforms, including the National Immigration Administration (NIA) official website, China’s Government Service Platform, the “NIA 12367” app, as well as WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. QR codes on physical Arrival Cards will also link directly to the online form for easy access.
Travelers who are unable to complete the process in advance will still have the option to fill out forms at immigration checkpoints using either digital terminals or traditional paper forms.
Seven categories remain exempt from completing arrival cards: holders of Chinese permanent residence permits, individuals with travel permits for Hong Kong and Macau, group visa holders, 24-hour transit passengers, cruise travelers, users of fast-track entry channels, and foreign crew members.
In addition to the new online system, China has expanded its visa-free transit policies.
As of 5 November, ten airports across China now offer 24-hour visa-free transit without requiring immigration inspections. These include Tianjin Binhai, Dalian Zhoushuizi, Nanjing Lukou, Fuzhou Changle, Qingdao Jiaodong, Wuhan Tianhe, Nanning Wuxu, Haikou Meilan, Chongqing Jiangbei, and Kunming Changshui airports.
Transit passengers with connecting flights to third countries remain within the airport’s international zone without formal entry procedures.
Meanwhile, Guangdong Province’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy has been extended to include five new entry ports: Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal, Hengqin Port, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port, Zhongshan Port, and West Kowloon Station.
Eligible travelers from countries covered by China’s visa-free transit program may stay in the country for up to 10 days for tourism, business, or family visits. However, activities involving employment, study, or journalism will still require appropriate visas.
