New Road Connects Thai Border to Luang Prabang, Reduces Travel Time

This Week

A new road connecting the Thai border at Nan Province with Luang Prabang Province in Laos has officially opened, cutting the travel time for visitors.

The new road extends from Hongsa District to Luang Prabang, and then reaches the border crossing with Nan Province in Thailand.

Prior to the construction of this road, travel between the two provinces took nine hours, while the trip will now take between four and five hours.

The new road and subsequent drop in travel time is expected to draw more visitors from Thailand to Laos, including Thai nationals and overseas tourists.

The total cost of the road was 64 million US dollars, with Thailand contributing to construction and also providing a loan for 80% of the cost.
