Education officials are taking part in a capacity development workshop on test development and design in schools.
Participants will learn about test design for students using several methods to assess learning/teaching in their fields for primary and secondary school levels and state and private schools.
The Education Quality Assurance Centre is holding the workshop from September 27-30, supported by the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Director of the Education Quality Assurance Centre, Mr. Vanhsay Noraseng, and UNESCO Bangkok representative Ms Ramya Vivekanandan Rodrigues, along with officials from educational institutions are attending the workshop.
The workshop aims to upgrade skills in test development and design for education officials and teachers and to provide methods for test design that correspond to the capacity and knowledge level of students.
Participants will learn how to develop test designs that match international standards.
Workshop activities include presentations on education quality monitoring and learning assessment systems in Laos and modern assessment theory, with participants gaining an understanding of the difference between difficulty level and cognitive level.
The workshop will have a presentation on developing quality assessment items including descriptions of the best practices associated with developing multiple-choice items for assessment.
It will outline the fundamentals of multiple-choice item development and provide information on developing technically sound multiple-choice test items, and communicate the best practice in test question development of practice, critique and solicit feedback.
Meanwhile, the workshop will present an analysis of test items using classical test theory, developing rubrics for assessing non-cognitive skills and national and international assessment.
After that, participants will evaluate the quality of multiple-choice items provided by the presenters and taken from a teacher entry test.
Participants will present to the whole group some of the items they have evaluated, citing both good and bad characteristics of these examples.
