PM to Curb Spending on State Vehicles in Laos

This Week

Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh told the National Assembly that the government will cut spending on state vehicles.

The PM said that there are currently thousands of vehicles registered to the state, and that very soon he would issue a decree regulating the use of vehicles by government agencies.

He said the decree would see the redistribution of state vehicles fairly among government offices and employees, according to KPL.

The decree will define the exact number of vehicles required by each government ministry or agency.

“Politburo members will be provided with only two vehicles, an SUV and a sedan,” said Mr. Phankham, unlike in previous years when members were provided with numerous vehicles.

Extra vehicles will be confiscated and distributed among state bodies that have an insufficient number of vehicles, and when these have been fairly distributed, the government will not purchase new vehicles, according to the PM.

He also stated that retired officials would no longer be provided with new vehicles.

The move to counter excessive spending on vehicles comes as the country struggles to cope with financial difficulties brought on amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The National Assembly discussed plans to deal with financial problems at the extraordinary session of its ninth legislature.
