The Vientianale 2017 Short Film Competition is currently calling for entries with the deadline being the end of January next year.
Vientianale Short Film Competition Representative Ms Helen said the project is open to anyone currently living in Laos and it didn’t matter about the filmmakers nationality and filmmaking experience.
There competition has no theme so filmmakers can be creative.
The project was currently being publicised through social media and generating a lot of interest and she expected more than 40 films would enter before the January 31 deadline.
An independent jury will choose the three best films with the winner receiving 8 million kip, second 5 million kip and third place 3 million kip.
All the short films will be screened on the final day of the Vientianale Film Festival, with the audience voting for their favourite in the People’s Choice category.
Films should be no more than 7 minutes in length (including title and end credits), must be subtitled in English (or in Lao if the film is in English) and filmmakers must currently live in Laos.
All material in the film must observe copyright rules with entries submitted on DVD (data) in MPEG4, AV, WMV, H264 or MOV formats along with the entry form.

Vientianale International Film Festival celebrates the art of film and the diversity of Lao culture in the country’s capital. The annual festival showcases an exciting programme of international features and short films, emerging as an important platform for local filmmakers to screen their works.
Last year attracted 39 entries for the short film competition, along with six shorts created in the Art of Short Filmmaking workshop run throughout the Mini Vientianale.
The winners were announced at the Cultural Hall on March 13 with1st Prize: Without Mindfulness, directed by Novice Bouasy, 2nd Prize: Sinh directed by Mitpasa Sitthihankanya, and two 3rd Pr izes: Smack That Mosquito, directed by Soukthavone Panyaphone and Don’t Tell Me How To Be Perfect, directed by Sophie Vo ngkhamsao .
The People’s Choice Prize went to The Office directed by Souphalack Keomaneekone.
The Lao New Wave Special Award for Promising Filmmaker was presented to two entries: Monk Noy directed by Hutsadee Outhathip, and Your Choice, directed by Pongphone Lammaggoun.
Special Mention for Outstanding Technical Achievement went to 300 Seconds, directed by Palinya Xayamong khoun and Special Mention for Outstanding Cinematography was presented to Melody of Bamboo directed by Ka Xiong .
