This Week

Dr. Sonexay Siphandone has been elected Prime Minister of Laos after receiving nearly 100% of votes from the National Assembly.

The results of votes by National Assembly members were announced today during a live broadcast of the 4th Ordinary Session of the National Assembly’s 9th Legislature.

Addressing the National Assembly, Dr. Sonexay thanked members for their support and trust, saying it was a great honor to have been elected the new Prime Minister of Laos.

“I understand deeply that this will be a difficult and challenging role, requiring me to take over the leadership of the 9th Government of Laos, as well as the management, safeguarding, and development of our nation,” he said.

“I promise to do my utmost to carry out my duty to the best of my ability in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the Lao PDR,” said Dr. Sonexay, swearing the oath before the assembly.

Dr. Sonexay also praised the efforts of outgoing Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh, and thanked him for his service.

Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh, who was elected to the post on 21 March 2021, also gave a speech to the National Assembly.

The outgoing PM cited various difficulties during his tenure, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the global economic downturn, that had led to his deteriorating health.

“I am 72 years old, and am no longer in good health,” said Mr. Phankham, addressing the assembly.

“Because of this, I feel that I can no longer carry the heavy burdens our country is facing,” he added, saying that on 15 December his request for early retirement was approved by President Thongloun Sisoulith.

Following speeches, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the National Assembly President, Saysomphone Phomvihane, and given a standing ovation by assembly members.
