The Communist Party of Vietnam’s 13th Central Committee announced the resignation of Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong on 20 March after his alleged serious violation of party regulations and corruption allegations.
Thuong, who assumed the presidency in 2023, submitted a letter requesting relief from his duties, a request that was subsequently accepted by the Party Central Committee.
In response to the vacancy, the party has appointed Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan as the acting president of Vietnam effective 21 March. Xuan will hold the position until the National Assembly convenes to elect a new president.
In addition to the president’s resignation, the party committee also discussed disciplinary measures against former provincial party official Hoang Thi Thuy Lan. The committee noted Lan’s decline in political ideology, morality, and lifestyle, along with serious violations of party regulations and State laws, including accepting bribes, which led to her expulsion from the party.
As Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan steps in as acting president, the party emphasizes its stance against corruption, aiming to maintain public trust and uphold its reputation.
