Born as an international nexus of music and culture, [ ACCELERATE-“GRAMMY” ]

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — AXLR8-G is a cross-industry project formed by Japan’s leading artists, creators, and record label representatives. Encompassing a diverse range of works from multiple musicians, it represents an unprecedented initiative to accelerate Japan’s challenge toward the global stage. This year, AXLR8-G took its first step by strongly supporting numerous official entries from Japan. Designed with the utmost respect for the GRAMMY Awards, the project does not replace any role of the official organizers. Instead, it aims to build the pathway for artists to step onto the international stage, in full compliance with the official submission and review process set by the Recording Academy.

These activities are conducted under the guidance and cooperation of the officially recognized CANNES GALA, endorsed by the Cannes Film Festival.

In recent years, Japan’s animation and manga industries have achieved record-breaking revenues. Owing to its unique market structure—stronger in physical media compared to global standards—the music market has also shown double-digit growth, expanding Japan’s content industry. However, according to IFPI global statistics, Japan, despite being Asia’s largest music market, has maintained a heavy focus on domestic activities.

The launch of AXLR8-G marks a major step in enhancing Japan’s international music mobility, positioning the country as a model case that may influence the global balance of the content industry, as Asia’s largest consumer market becomes more deeply connected to Western industry structures.

The first event will be held on February 1, 2026, in Los Angeles, coinciding with the 68th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

Kimitaka Kato – Executive Director:
“A new generation of Japanese artists is creating a powerful movement in the global music scene. Their energy transcends borders, resonating deeply with young audiences in the West and beginning to exert real influence. By pursuing the GRAMMY Awards together, we aim to further expand the presence of Japanese music across the world.”

TAICHI – Chairman:
“The GRAMMY Awards uphold the philosophy of ‘connecting people and cultures through music to build a better society.’ They have continually demonstrated how creativity can transform the world. Sharing this same spirit, AXLR8-G—alongside the CANNES GALA, the only officially recognized social ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival—envisions a future where artistic creation unites beyond national boundaries.”

Threads of Harmony | Shirley Zhou’s Unconfined Embroidery International Exhibition Opens in Singapore

SINGAPORE, Nov. 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Shirley Zhou’s Unconfined Embroidery International Exhibition which organized by Shanghai Genarts Culture Media Co., Ltd. holds its official opening at ION Art Gallery, Singapore, running from November 6 to 10.

Curated and presented by Ms. Shirley Zhou, the fourth-generation inheritor of China’s intangible cultural heritage embroidery art, the exhibition showcases over 50 artworks that bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics. Centered on the theme “Threads of Harmony: Cultural Symbiosis,” it invites audiences into a dialogue on cultural fusion and artistic innovation through the language of needle and thread.

Bridging East and West — Building Cultural Symbiosis Through Embroidery

“Threads of Harmony” is not merely an exhibition—it embodies Shirley Zhou’s artistic philosophy. Her works merge the subtlety of Eastern embroidery arts with Western compositional structure, breathing new life into traditional embroidery.

Mr. Zhou Nan, President of the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Association, noted that Shirley Zhou’s artistic journey reflects the spirit of innovation among a new generation of cultural inheritors.

The representative figures in Singapore’s art community and audience remarked that Shirley Zhou’s artistic creations use silk threads as a bridge between tradition and technology, infusing contemporary vitality into heritage art while enriching Singapore’s cultural diversity and inclusiveness.

Special Tribute: celebrate Singapore’s 60th Anniversary

In celebration of Singapore’s 60th anniversary of independence in 2025, Shirley Zhou’s created a special tribute piece — a portrait of former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, rendered through four distinct embroidery techniques: realism, abstraction, sketch, and line drawing.

This artwork embodies the artist’s admiration for Singapore’s multicultural spirit, resilience, and openness — a reflection of mutual respect and cultural resonance between China and Singapore.

A Poetic Dialogue in Threads

Two lotus-themed pieces, combining oil-painting vibrancy with the poetic restraint of ink wash, drew particular attention. Through thousands of meticulous stitches, Shirley Zhou recreates the richness of oil tones and the ethereal balance of Chinese ink.  The first piece “Water Lilies” showcases the essence of oil painting through embroidery. With crisp and lively needlework, vibrant colors, and seemingly unrestrained yet meticulously executed stitches, the passionate texture of oil painting blossoms on the embroidered canvas. The second piece ” The Charm of Lotus” captures the soul of ink wash painting. The blending of ink flows like clouds and water, in fact, conceals dozens of subtle gradations of black, gray, and white. the embroidery weaves a ‘richly colorful ink palette,’ revealing depth within elegance and boundless meaning within simplicity.

Artist-led Tours and Cultural Exchange

During the exhibition, Shirley Zhou personally conducted guided tours for visitors, explaining her techniques, inspirations, and stories behind each piece. These exchanges deepened the audience’s understanding of modern embroidery as both a cultural legacy and a contemporary art form.

Shirley Zhou’s attributes her creative liberation to the dynamic interplay between Eastern and Western cultures. This fusion has empowered her to transcend conventional boundaries and develop a uniquely unconfined artistic voice.

From Singapore to the World

“Threads of Harmony” marks not only an exhibition but the beginning of a broader cultural journey. Through her needle and thread, Shirley Zhou echoes Singapore’s spirit of openness and innovation.

In the future, Zhou’ art will continue to reach out to the world. With an open mind, it will engage in the preservation and promotion of global intangible cultural heritage, allowing Eastern embroidery to shine on the international stage—transcending cultures and connecting souls.

Exhibition Dates: 10:00-22:00 Nov 6-11, 2025
Venue: ION Art Gallery, Level 4, ION Orchard 2 Orchard Turn, Singapore 238801
Theme: Threads of Harmony • Cultural Symbiosis

China is set to introduce a new digital immigration system that allows foreign visitors to complete arrival forms online before entering the country.

Beginning 20 November, travelers can submit their entry information through multiple platforms, including the National Immigration Administration (NIA) official website, China’s Government Service Platform, the “NIA 12367” app, as well as WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. QR codes on physical Arrival Cards will also link directly to the online form for easy access.

Travelers who are unable to complete the process in advance will still have the option to fill out forms at immigration checkpoints using either digital terminals or traditional paper forms.

Seven categories remain exempt from completing arrival cards: holders of Chinese permanent residence permits, individuals with travel permits for Hong Kong and Macau, group visa holders, 24-hour transit passengers, cruise travelers, users of fast-track entry channels, and foreign crew members.

In addition to the new online system, China has expanded its visa-free transit policies.

As of 5 November, ten airports across China now offer 24-hour visa-free transit without requiring immigration inspections. These include Tianjin Binhai, Dalian Zhoushuizi, Nanjing Lukou, Fuzhou Changle, Qingdao Jiaodong, Wuhan Tianhe, Nanning Wuxu, Haikou Meilan, Chongqing Jiangbei, and Kunming Changshui airports.

Transit passengers with connecting flights to third countries remain within the airport’s international zone without formal entry procedures.

Meanwhile, Guangdong Province’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy has been extended to include five new entry ports: Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal, Hengqin Port, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port, Zhongshan Port, and West Kowloon Station.

Eligible travelers from countries covered by China’s visa-free transit program may stay in the country for up to 10 days for tourism, business, or family visits. However, activities involving employment, study, or journalism will still require appropriate visas.

Philippines Must Build on Malaysia-led ASEAN Geopolitical, Economic Momentum

BY Alina Khai – As the Philippines takes over the ASEAN chairmanship, analysts say continuity and sustained momentum will be vital to safeguarding the region’s peace and prosperity.

Faiz Abdullah, chairman of Malaysia’s Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), cautioned against letting Malaysia’s recent diplomatic breakthroughs fade.

He highlighted the first-ever ASEAN–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)–China trilateral summit, which he said could redefine regional cooperation and development if its progress was maintained.

“You have a combination of dynamic forces at play. ASEAN and the GCC are already formidable, and with China in the picture, there’s a lot more depth,” he said in ISIS Malaysia’s ASEAN Moment podcast.

“China is technologically advanced, and its financial infrastructure complements the GCC’s deep resources.”

Veteran diplomat Ilango Karuppannan, meanwhile, told FMT that the Philippines should build on Malaysia’s progress in addressing the South China Sea and Myanmar issues.

Ilango, Malaysia’s former ambassador to Singapore, said the issues must be handled within an ASEAN framework, free from interference by external powers.

“The Philippines has a major role to play. It won’t be easy, but Malaysia and the others are ready to help,” he said, noting that Malaysia remains the ASEAN–China relations coordinator from 2024 to 2027.

On Myanmar, Ilango stressed that ASEAN’s special envoy to the war-torn nation should serve for more than a year.

Under ASEAN’s rotating chairmanship, each new chair appoints its own special envoy to mediate between Myanmar’s warring factions and coordinate the implementation of the bloc’s five-point consensus peace framework. Under Malaysia’s chairmanship, ASEAN has been exploring the idea of appointing a permanent envoy.

“Perhaps under the Philippines, we could agree to have a permanent envoy, someone who serves for several years and provides continuity,” Ilango said.

Faiz agreed, saying a permanent envoy would be crucial for progress.

“Just as things begin to settle (after a year), the envoy is replaced by someone new,” he said.

“Continuity is a major issue. Resolving that should be one of the Philippines’ key priorities.”

Realising Potential

Joanne Lin, senior fellow at Singapore’s ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute, agreed that Malaysia’s chairmanship was “ambitious” and had delivered major milestones.

However, she noted that many initiatives remained incomplete and required sustained effort by successive ASEAN chairs.

“The ASEAN Geo-Economic Task Force and Industrial Strategy were important steps, but they’re still at a conceptual stage,” she said.

“Greater follow-through is needed to operationalize them through sectoral roadmaps, funding mechanisms, and private sector engagement.”

Lin told FMT that Manila could also strengthen ASEAN’s collective voice on key economic issues.

“ASEAN still struggles to communicate a cohesive position on emerging trade and technology issues, especially in response to US tariffs and China’s evolving industrial policies,” she said.

“The Philippines could build on this by pushing for a more actionable blueprint, perhaps an ASEAN semiconductor roadmap or digital infrastructure fund, to move the region from coordination to execution.”

She said Manila could also play a stronger political role as ASEAN’s cautious diplomacy had ensured unity, but often at the cost of momentum.

Room for Improvement

While experts praised Malaysia’s deft use of soft power and strategic leadership during challenging geopolitical and economic times, both Faiz and Lin pointed to areas that could have been handled better.

Faiz lamented the lack of progress in revitalizing the East Asia Summit, calling it “a Jurassic institution” that had devolved into scripted speeches with little strategic engagement.

“There’s no real will or proper agenda to see specific things done,” he said, adding that the absence of top-level attendees and the US-China rivalry had made consensus difficult.

Lin, meanwhile, said the recent unrest in Indonesia, the Thai-Cambodia border dispute, and ASEAN’s slow response to Myanmar’s crisis risked undermining the bloc’s legitimacy in the eyes of ordinary citizens.

“It shows how far ASEAN still is from achieving its own aspirations, as outlined in the ASEAN Community Vision 2045,” she said.

Lin added that ASEAN’s perception of being more focused on diplomacy than on people’s welfare remained a challenge.

“To restore confidence, ASEAN needs to make its people-centered agenda more tangible by investing in inclusive growth, which was the theme of Malaysia’s chairmanship,” she said.

“It also means closing the communication gap so that citizens can see how ASEAN cooperation directly supports jobs, education, and community resilience. At the end of the day, that’s what truly matters to the people of ASEAN.”
