ASEAN Summit Ends In Laos

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Laos has ended with the chairmanship of the ten member bloc passing to the Philippines in a brief ceremony.

Ahead of the 14th India-Asean Summit and the 11th East Asia Summit here on Thursday, Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith said that his country supports a permanent seat for India in the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Laos Joins Paris Agreement

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic on Wednesday became the 27th nation to submit to the United Nations its document of ratification for the Paris Agreement on climate change. The Paris Agreement, the first global climate change accord, will enter into force 30 days after 55 nations representing at least 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval, or accession to the U.N.

Citizenship, Family Books, ID Cards Awarded to Expatriates in Laos

Several years ago, the Lao government introduced a policy to reward qualified foreign expatriates in Laos with citizenship if they so desired. Laos also gives family books and ID cards to foreigners who do not want to denounce their original citizenship.
