“BEAM Plus Existing Schools Version 1.0” pioneers green building rating for Hong Kong schools, advocating green building and sustainability to the next generation

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 17 October 2022 – Today, the BEAM Society Limited and Hong Kong Green Building Council jointly launched the “BEAM Plus Existing Schools v1.0” – Hong Kong’s first and foremost rating tool designed to assess the sustainability performance of school premises – at CIC Zero Carbon Park. The unique assessment tool and the technical guidebook comprises simple guidelines and assessment criteria to help existing schools reduce energy consumption and carbon emission, while enhancing the environmental awareness of teachers and students through participation and education. More than 100 guests attended the launch ceremony officiated by Mr David Lam, Under Secretary for Development, the Government of the HKSAR.

High electricity consumption in schools prompts the need for energy efficiency

Currently, building operation and activities inside buildings are accountable for 90% of electricity consumption in Hong Kong. With over 1000 primary and secondary schools, reducing electricity consumption in these premises will help Hong Kong lower its carbon emission. On the other hand, the increasing demand of electronic equipment for supporting digital and STEM education, coupled with the persistent operation of lighting and air conditioning equipment, have led to rising power consumption on school campuses.

To encourage schools to reduce their carbon footprints, Business Environment Council Limited, BEAM Society Limited and Hong Kong Green Building Council are implementing the “Jockey Club BEAM Plus in Schools Project” which is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Environment and Ecology Bureau, Education Bureau and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. This three-and-a-half-year long project aims at assisting local primary and secondary schools to improve their energy efficiency through the adoption of “BEAM Plus Existing Schools v1.0” (“the assessment tool”) developed by BEAM Society Limited.

All- round assessment criteria with emphasis on green awareness in education

Mr Ho Kin Li, Chairperson of BEAM Society Limited mentioned, “‘BEAM Plus Existing Schools’ is the first green assessment tool designed for the use in primary and secondary schools after taking their unique operation model into consideration. The application of this assessment tool is simpler and easier than other BEAM Plus tools so that teachers and students are motivated to take part in the process and schools are effectively engaged.”

Apart from the traditional assessment of energy efficiency performance, this assessment tool also places emphasis on integrating green awareness into education. It conducts performance assessment on four new performance categories tailored to fit the nature and operation model of existing schools. These include “Sustainable Leadership and Learning”, “Sustainable Campus Environment”, “Efficient Use of Resources”, and “Health, Comfort and Happiness”. The tool comprises around 30 assessment criteria embracing various sustainability issues to help schools reduce energy consumption and carbon emission.

Great educational significance promoting behavioral change and enhancing the sustainable development of campuses

Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, SBS, Chairman of Hong Kong Green Building Council shared, “Schools are an integral building blocks of a city. In addition to nurturing the next generation, they also play a part in advocating sustainable built environment and green living. Through taking part in this assessment exercise, we hope that schools can create a low-carbon environment for teachers and students. They will have first-hand experience with the benefits of energy saving. This is the first step towards raising environmental awareness in society.”

In addition to the environmental element, the assessment tool also contains the educational element to engage teachers and students. Through theories and practices, the tool identifies and raises students’ interest in green building and environmental awareness, thereby promoting green living and enhancing the sustainable development of school campuses.

Multiple consultations within the industry and education sector to brings high recognition

Ar Tony Ip, Convenor of the Steering Committee for “BEAM Plus Existing Schools” stated, “This assessment tool has taken the reference of seven international and local assessment criteria, and has conducted a number of workshops, questionnaires and focus group meetings before its launch. Support and participation have been sought from school principals, teachers, students and industry representatives in order to understand and meet the pragmatic needs of schools. At the moment, three schools have completed the pilot assessment and have made remarkable achievement. We believe they have made wonderful exemplars for schools in Hong Kong, and have given high recognition of BEAM Plus Existing Schools.”

Immuno Cure secured maximum subsidy from HKSTP

Significant funding support for HIV Vaccine Clinical Trial

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 17 October 2022 – Immuno Cure BioTech, a clinical stage biotechnology group based in the Hong Kong Science Park specialising in DNA vaccines and immunotherapies, announced today that Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”) has awarded maximum amount of HK$8 million matching funding to Immuno Cure under the Clinical Translational Catalyst program (“CTC Program”) for conducting the Phase 1 Clinical Trial of ICVAX, a therapeutic vaccine against HIV/AIDS.

The overarching aim of the CTC Program offered by HKSTP Institute for Translational Research (“ITR”) is to provide a platform to transform Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area to become the go-to destination for translational medicine in the region. Under this program, funding support will be provided to biomedical companies of HKSTP to bring innovative, life-changing therapies and technologies to patients.

The CTC Program funding of HK$8 million will be drawn down by Immuno Cure in the next 27 months in various tranches according to the progress of the clinical trial of ICVAX. Immuno Cure previously received the University-Industry Collaboration Programme and Cash Rebate Scheme funding of some HK$8.4 million from the Government’s Innovation and Technology Fund (“ITF”) for the research and development of ICVAX since early 2018. As a collaborator, the AIDS Institute of The Hong Kong University has subsequently received a total amount of HK$ 47 million from Government’s Research Grants Council Theme-based Research Scheme for basic and translational research on “Potentiating Host Immunity for HIV-1 Functional Cure”.

ICVAX is a therapeutic HIV DNA vaccine developed using the patented PD-1-Enhanced DNA Vaccine platform, aiming to induce cross-reactive viral-specific T cells to achieve functional cure in HIV. This vaccine is developed by Immuno Cure in collaboration with HKU AIDS Institute. Immuno Cure has successfully obtained the approval of Investigational New Drug application of ICVAX by the National Medical Products Administration in the Mainland. Together with the approval granted by the ethics committee of The Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, Immuno Cure is initiating a First-in-Human Phase 1 clinical trial of ICVAX in the hospital.

The trial is designed as a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation study to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of ICVAX in stable HIV/AIDS patients under antiretroviral therapy. Overall, the study will take approximately 18-24 months to complete. By the end of the study, an optimal vaccine dosage that is both safe and immunogenic in stable HIV patients will be identified for subsequent clinical trials in the future. Immuno Cure is currently working closely with all partners involved to propel the study forward.

In addition to ICVAX, Immuno Cure currently has another PD-1-Enhanced DNA vaccine for prevention of COVID-19, ICCOV, in preparation for advancement to Phase 2 clinical trial.

Dr JIN Xia, CEO of Immuno Cure said, “Initiation of this phase 1 clinical trial is supported by promising preclinical study results and safety evaluation that demonstrated the antiviral activity of this potential first-in-class therapeutic vaccine designed and developed specifically against HIV. Our novel PD-1-Enhanced DNA vaccine platform is ready for first-in-human trial and we are very pleased to be in the forefront of the field. We are honoured to receive this funding support from HKSTP and are optimistic that our long-term collaboration with HKU AIDS Institute will bear fruit.”

Professor CHEN Zhiwei, Director of AIDS Institute at the University of Hong Kong and the Principal Scientific Advisor of Immuno Cure said, “HIV has been a major public health challenge for more than four decades. Our vaccine platform has demonstrated safety and potent efficacy in non-human primates. I hope the HKSTP support and private funding from Immuno Cure together with research grant from the Government will help us to assess whether the excellent preclinical data could be translated into human and lay solid foundation for drug development towards functional cure of HIV patients.”

Dr Percy CHENG, Chairman of Immuno Cure concludes, “We are privileged to be partnering with HKU AIDS Institute and HKSTP ITR and grateful for this CTC Program funding in support of our translational process. We also treasure the funding support from ITF since 2018 during the early stage of the development of ICVAX. We would

also like to express our special thanks to our volunteers in advance for their selfless contributions, without whom we would not be able to kick off this exciting clinical trial.”

Mr. Weber Lo, Chief Executive Officer of Hang Lung Properties, and Mr. Andy Ho, Executive Director of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (“HKFYG”), officiated at the ceremony with the Guest of Honor, Ms. Louise Ho Pui Shan, CDSM, CMSM, the first female Commissioner of the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, and keynote speaker Dr. Rosanna Wong, DBE, JP, Senior Advisor of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.

The Hang Lung Future Women Leaders Program was officiated under the witness of
university representatives and elite women mentors

Mr. Weber Lo, said in his opening remarks, “We are delighted with the positive feedback the program has received from universities and students across the nation. It is also our great honor to have Customs chief, Louise Ho, attending today to share how she has strived for excellence in the civil service. Nurturing future talents requires collective effort across society, and I am thankful to our tenants and business partners, who have joined hands with Hang Lung by volunteering their time and effort to participate in this meaningful initiative as mentors. The Future Women Leaders program aims to pool the strengths of different stakeholders in the community to promote women’s development and create a compelling space that values diversity and inclusiveness. We believe these 100 female university students will have a once-in-a-lifetime experience to draw inspiration from their elite women mentors, and equip themselves to become Hong Kong’s future leaders.”

(From second left) Ms. Anita Fung, BBS, JP, Independent Non-executive Director of Hang Lung Properties; Ms. Jennifer Liu, Founder & Chairlady of The Academϊcs Group, Director of The Dragon Foundation; and Ms. Rebecca Lim, Founding Partner of AutoML Capital Limited, share their growth and success stories at the Women Leadership Forum to inspire female university students to broaden their perspectives when considering their future development goals and directions

Sharing his hopes for the program, Mr. Andy Ho, Executive Director of the HKFYG, said, “Women play a fundamental role both in the family and in the community, but sometimes opportunities for public engagement and participation are lacking. This is where the Federation plays its part. I am extremely grateful to Hang Lung for their support to the HKFYG Leadership Institute. The high-quality training of the program emphasizes both learning and practice for women university students with leadership potential, and is a response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We look forward to these young leaders designing and implementing social projects, which will go a long way in building a future with diversity and inclusion.”

The officiating guest, Ms. Louise Ho Pui Shan, CDSM, CMSM, is the first female Commissioner of the Customs and Excise Department, and also the first female government official promoted to the highest rank in the Disciplined Services. Encouraging the female university students attending the event, she said, “Conscientious professionalism, as well as integrity and perseverance are gender neutral. The key is not the gender of the people, but whether they display empathy, and the courage to accept challenges and responsibility. Women no longer have to show masculinity to gain acceptance in a male-dominated workplace. They can retain their femininity, be true to themselves and achieve success while complementing male colleagues. The ‘Hang Lung Future Women Leaders’ program organized by Hang Lung Properties is very meaningful. I believe even the mentors can gain from it, adding new elements to their personal development from which they will be able to pass on the courage and perseverance of women in pursuing continuous self-improvement and lifelong learning. I have high hopes for this program and I wish all the mentors and friends participating in the program a bright future.”

Dr. Rosanna Wong, DBE, JP, Senior Advisor of the HKFYG delivered a keynote speech on leadership in which she pointed out that in the face of the pandemic, the global economic slowdown and tense international situations, good leaders must maintain an open, flexible, and positive attitude to lead their teams with innovation and resilience leadership, and turn disadvantages into opportunities. She then encouraged the young women leaders to be continuous learners, use new thinking, new skills, and new networks to thrive in the face of today’s fast changing challenges. The most important attribute of a leader, however, according to Dr. Wong, is the willingness to take up social responsibility and serve others for a sustainable future locally, nationally and globally.

Following the keynote speech was the Women Leadership Forum. With the theme of “Empowering Women to Tap Their Strengths”, Ms. Anita Fung, BBS, JP, Independent Non-executive Director of Hang Lung Properties; Ms. Jennifer Liu, Founder & Chairlady of The Academϊcs Group, Director of The Dragon Foundation; and Ms. Rebecca Lim, Founding Partner of AutoML Capital Limited shared their own stories of how they overcame challenges and kept pushing forward to achieve their goals and become the person they are today.

Jordan Oral Care Malaysia Survey Reveals That Quality Time Is What Makes Children Smile Most

  • 86% of respondents said that family time makes their children happy
  • Share your child’s smile with Jordan and stand a chance to win cash prizes!

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA – Media OutReach – 17 October 2022 – With the fast-paced lifestyle that most Malaysians live, many parents’ responsibilities may result in missing out on their children’s daily precious smiles. Jordan Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd – the brand behind the leading Jordan Kids Universe range designed especially for children – has launched Jordan Can’t Smile Without You, a campaign dedicated to helping more parents enhance that special, precious smiley bond with their little ones!

To understand this in detail, Jordan recently surveyed Malaysian parents to find out what their child’s smiles meant to them. From this, an exciting finding emerged where, compared to toys or screen time, 86% of the respondents said that family quality time is the number one factor that makes them smile. A healthy smile is undoubtedly one way children develop interpersonal relationships and self-esteem.

“Most parents can be too busy with the inevitable hustle and bustle of life that results in them missing out on some special moments, particularly within the crucial growing-up stage for the little ones. We embarked on the Jordan Can’t Smile Without You campaign as a personal and important mission for us. We know that it can be stressful knowing we cannot spend enough quality time with our children. It is the big bright, clean smiles of our children that we always remember and keep close to our heart as they grow older,” Jerry Ng, Country Manager for Malaysia, Thailand & Philippines at Jordan Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, shared.

“Parents will do everything they can to protect the smiles of their little ones. A good, consistent oral routine is a big part of nurturing those invaluable little smiles, and Jordan has made oral hygiene easy, fun and accessible,” Jerry added.”

Good Oral Hygiene In Children

The survey also found that 97% of respondents use age-appropriate toothbrushes for their children, with 62% of respondents stating they change their children’s toothbrushes every three months.

“These are especially encouraging results as it shows that many parents are sufficiently aware of the necessity for proper oral hygiene amongst little ones,” Jerry continued. “At Jordan, we always highlight the importance of starting oral hygiene habits and education from a very young age; the early inculcation of these habits results in healthy, strong teeth as children grow up.”

Dr Noorhidayah Bt Zainal Aalam, Dental Lecturer, Department of Paediatric Dentistry Orthodontics; Faculty of Dentistry at Universiti Malaya, commented that good oral hygiene habits are crucial in helping children avoid teeth caries. “Caries is essentially caused by dental plaque that grows on mouth surfaces. It consists of bacteria that thrives off mainly sugar and refined carbohydrates, and it can eventually result in tooth cavities if left on tooth surfaces for long enough. Because it is one of the more common diseases worldwide, incorporating early oral hygiene education and consistent brushing habits can help keep caries and cavities at bay. A healthy smile greatly affects social interaction, which is important in how children are seen, felt, and perceived by others. Studies have also shown that children without caries smile more positively and show more teeth when smiling. As parents, we must encourage good oral hygiene habits for our children to have a better quality of life.”

The Jordan Kids Universe Steps range consists of 3 key toothbrushes that ensure your little ones’ pearly whites are cleaned and protected in the cleanest, most gentle and effective way in three main age groups: Step 1 (0-2 years); Step 2 (3-5 years), and Step 3 (6-9 years). The range also comes with 2 kid-friendly toothpaste, suitable for children from: Step 1 (0-5 years old) and Step 2 (6-12 years old). The toothpastes are formulated with gentle, natural, vegan ingredients to protect tiny teeth, with tested flavors that every child loves and with bright, colorful packaging that’s sure to make teeth-brushing time a fun time for all.

All in all, Jordan’s Kids Universe Steps range is designed to accompany every child as they grow into different stages of life. With extra soft bristles and comfortable, ergonomic handles, all three brushes are designed to take the best care of your children’s milk and permanent teeth – giving them the best, brightest smiles.

Jordan Can’t Smile Without You Contest

To also encourage more Malaysian parents to cherish their little ones’ special smiles, Jordan is looking to reward 20 parents through their Jordan Can’t Smile Without You contest with a special cash prize of RM1,500 each! The contest runs from 15 September 2022 to 31 October 2022 and calls on parents to spend time with their children and capture and share their child’s smiley moments!

Validate entries will also receive a bonus reward with specially designed videos consisting of the uploaded entries and messages within 48 hours of submission.

“We hope this campaign acts as a catalyst for parents to spend more quality time with their children and create happy smiles together in a beautiful and meaningful way. That’s what this campaign and the Jordan Kids Universe range is all about – helping children show off their healthy, clean smiles,” Jerry concluded.
