Beijing Review: When Pacific Youth Wove Diplomacy in Jiangnan Mist!

On July 16, the China-U.S. Future Diplomats Summer Camp was launched at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Representatives from both nations, educators, and students gathered through keynote speeches and case studies, exploring the profound significance of youth exchange for China-U.S. relations. From July 16 to 17, young delegates engaged in multilateral diplomatic simulations, debating environmental governance, AI cooperation, and trade relations, honing cross-cultural negotiation skills through discourse.

Michael Alexander Buzzy, a PhD candidate at Wayne State University Law School, shared: “I must say this summer camp portion has been one favorite of my entire time in ChASC5 so far. My particular panel works on artificial intelligence (AI). This is something that’s been impacting us all, especially recently through chatbots such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek, giving us many experiences. And we all have shared experiences using those models, to be able to actually draw on our prior experience, dig into our understanding and our different backgrounds. We bring from artificial intelligence and help to try and produce a shared outcome. It is really meaningful. And this interpersonal exchange has been really powerful, as we each feel we have bought into the ideas that we’re bringing forward. We feel mutually respected by our peers, and the result is really something we all agree on. That compromise and genuine connection we make through that is really, really special.”

Liu Yuxuan, an undergraduate student in International Relations at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, noted: “What particularly excites me this time is the inclusion of American youth participants. Their presence amplifies diverse perspectives throughout our proceedings. Simultaneously, we Chinese delegates may assume roles representing China or portray American counterparts, and American delegates can advocate on behalf of China. This role-exchange mechanism enables delegates during preparation to deepen their understanding of current bilateral challenges and identify necessary actions to achieve mutually beneficial collaborative goals.”

On July 18, the closing ceremony culminated this trans-Pacific youth dialogue. With the signing of the Youth Declaration for the China-U.S. Future Diplomats Summer Camp and award presentation, Suzhou’s white-walled, black-tiled architecture bears witness to a shared commitment.

Li Liao, a high school student from Qinglai School, reflected: “Throughout these three days, what resonated most profoundly: despite representing different nations and governmental bodies, we unite in purpose, addressing collective global challenges. This embodies a defining truth of our contemporary world: divergent interests coexist, yet we bridge differences through mutual respect.”

Hannah Kim, an undergraduate student majoring in International Relations and Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, Canada, said: “I’m just so privileged to have even engaged in such a unique space in which we can bring delegates from all over China and also all over the world to come together and have really productive dialogue.”

Michael Alexander Buzzy added: “I really enjoyed and appreciated how intentional, substantive, and kind the dialogue was. No one was necessarily super aggressive or argumentative, and we were really able to just come together as people and work out our differences to come up with a really substantive final result. It was a true privilege to be a part of it. I’d say the summer camp is enlightening and inspirational, innovative and engaging.”

After the Summer Camp, delegates further delved into Suzhou Industrial Park, examining its technology-driven industrial transformation. By day, they explored Suzhou Museum, where within Ieoh Ming Pei’s Jiangnan-inspired architecture, youths experienced poetical serenity.

Henry Frederick Gregory Collins, an undergraduate student in International Political Economy with a minor in Asian Studies at the University of Puget Sound, noted: “Today we’re back with another video. We’re exploring the textile section of the Suzhou Museum, looking at some wonderful examples of beautiful Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) clothing. As we can see here, this beautiful garment is something that could have definitely been worn by someone who is both a warrior and a scholar—someone who could wield the sword but was also well versed in ancient scriptures and stuff like that.”

Noah Kekoa Candelario, an undergraduate student in International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound, said: “I really like the architecture here. I believe that it was designed by Leoh Ming Pei. I heard very few things about him, but my grandparents are huge fans of his work. I remember sitting in a hotel back home in Hawaii with my grandparents; they were really in distraught when he sadly passed away. So it’s amazing that you can find beauty in buildings as well. Since coming to China, I never expected that you’re able to combine materialism and nature at the same time and make nature work for mankind.”

Through tea ceremony gatherings and the pure tones of guqin melodies, delegates touched the essence of Eastern philosophy.

From July 7 to 23, 25 delegates selected via the International Student Conferences (ISC)’s 5th China-America Student Conference participated in “Across the Pacific: China-U.S. Youth Dialogue for a Shared Future,” journeying from Beijing to Xi’an, Suzhou, and Shanghai for exchanges. VDE Americas Verifies Successful Operation of GameChange Solar’s Genius Tracker™ HailStow™

For the study, VDE reviewed operational data during six storms that passed near the study site over a three-day period and met the criteria to trigger a hail stow. In all cases, the system successfully went to the desired steep stow angle, where solar panels are tilted to deflect direct hail impact. First-of-its-kind Venture Capital Programme in Asia launches as NUS commits S$150 million to boost growth of deep tech start-ups

  • NUS will invest S$50 million (US$39 million) in selected venture capital (VC) firms to provide structured support for NUS tech start-ups.

SINGAPORE, July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Asia is grappling with a prolonged funding winter, with venture capital investments falling sharply to a 10-year low of S$85 billion (US$66 billion). With a five per cent decline from 2023, early-stage funding totalled less than S$38 billion (US$29 billion) in 2024[1]. To address the critical funding and mentorship gaps faced by tech start-ups, NUS Enterprise, the entrepreneurial arm of the National University of Singapore (NUS) — flagship comprehensive research university in Singapore, is committing S$150 million (US$116 million) to launch the NUS VC Programme.

The initiative aims to enhance support for early-stage tech innovation by focusing on high-potential ventures within the NUS ecosystem, including start-ups from the National Graduate Research Innovation Programme (National GRIP). National GRIP empowers innovators to transform lab-based research discoveries into globally competitive, market-ready ventures.

“As the region faces a sharp pullback in venture capital activity, we see the new NUS VC Programme — the first of its kind initiative by a university in Asia — as a critical enabler. Research-based start-ups face distinct challenges, including R&D cycles that are much longer than traditional start-ups, making them especially vulnerable in today’s cautious investment environment. This programme brings together capital, strategic partnerships, and specialised venture expertise to create a more resilient path from lab to market,” said Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS President.

Beyond capital: Money and expertise

The programme comprises two key components.

First, NUS will commit S$50 million (US$39 million) over the next three years in selected venture capital firms with strong track records in early-stage deep tech investments. These firms will provide structured, hands-on support to start-ups, including time, expertise, and access to their networks to help them scale effectively.

The first two VC partners are Granite Asia, a leading multi-asset investment platform with a 25-year track record of backing breakthrough technology ventures globally, and 4BIO Capital, a specialist life sciences investor focused on advanced therapeutics. (Refer to Annexes A and B for details on the structured initiatives developed by NUS in collaboration with these partners and their quotes.)

Second, NUS will set aside S$100 million (US$78 million) for co-investments alongside these VC partners. These co-investments will be targeted at NUS-affiliated start-ups.

Complementing National GRIP with expert VC support for NUS start-ups

Many National GRIP start-ups are still in the early stages of technological readiness and require continued, strategic support to advance from lab to market. The NUS VC Programme complements the National GRIP framework by addressing this need for downstream venture development. While GRIP currently provides up to S$250,000 (US$194,000) in seed funding per start-up, the VC Programme focuses on accelerating post-seed growth and preparing ventures for external capital.

What sets this effort apart is the direct engagement with leading venture capital firms selected not only for their track records, but also for their market access in global innovation hubs. By combining capital with deep venture expertise, the programme offers structured support including mentorship, investor feedback, market entry, fundraising networks, and operational guidance.

LG AI Research Showcases ‘EXAONE Ecosystem’ at LG AI Talk Concert 2025

Pioneering AI Transformation from Bio to Business Intelligence

SEOUL, South Korea, July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — LG AI Research hosted its “LG AI Talk Concert 2025” today at the LG Sciencepark Convergence Hall in Magok, Seoul, showcasing the evolution of its EXAONE ecosystem. The event highlighted the culmination of five years of AI development, featuring advanced AI models and services designed for real-world industrial applications.

Woohyung Lim, Co-President of LG AI Research, outlined future plans, stating, “LG AI Research will secure global competitiveness based on our proprietary foundation model, go beyond AI model development to apply it in various industrial fields, thereby achieving both versatility and specialization, and create an AI ecosystem with global partners.” Following this, Honglak Lee, Co-President of LG AI Research and CSAI (Chief Scientist of AI), mentioned the recently unveiled EXAONE.

EXAONE 4.0 is leading hybrid AI model developed in Korea. EXAONE Path 2.0 is a precision medical AI model capable of reducing disease diagnosis time from two weeks to under one minute.

A highlight of LG AI Talk Concert 2025 was the debut of EXAONE 4.0 VL (Vision Language), a sophisticated multimodal AI model adept at comprehensively understanding complex professional documents, images, and molecular structures. In performance comparisons, EXAONE 4.0 VL demonstrated superior performance compared to Meta’s Llama 4 Scout model. Mr. Lee emphasized that EXAONE 4.0 VL will serve as the “eyes” of the EXAONE model.

Following this, Jungkyu Choi, leader of the AI Agent Group at LG AI Research, successively unveiled EXAONE-based enterprise AI agents that have completed LG’s internal validation: ChatEXAONE, EXAONE Data Foundry, and EXAONE On-Premise. Mr. Choi stated, “ChatEXAONE, the AI agent for LG employees, has obtained ISO certification for its ability to process even national core technology documents, demonstrating its potential for expansion into enterprise-exclusive services requiring high security.” He further added, “Following the release of EXAONE 4.0, we have expanded the model’s licensing scope to include educational purposes, preparing to enable students from elementary to university levels to freely utilize EXAONE.”

LG AI Research also introduced key technologies designed to accelerate the creation of specialized AI models for various professional domains. The newly unveiled ‘EXAONE Data Foundry’ is a platform that functions as an AI factory for producing high-quality data. EXAONE Data Foundry dramatically streamlines data generation, enabling a single individual to complete in one day what would typically require 60 experts working for three months. Validation projects conducted by LG AI Research with LG affiliates and national institutions have demonstrated a minimum 1,000-fold increase in data productivity and an average 20% improvement in data quality compared to existing methods.

LG AI Research concluded its EXAONE ecosystem showcase by introducing ‘EXAONE On-Premise’, a solution built entirely with proprietary Korean technology, from AI semiconductors to models. EXAONE On-Premise is a full-stack solution that establishes enterprise agents in an independent environment, enabling companies to utilize EXAONE models without security concerns. LG AI Research also highlighted its key domestic and international partners within the EXAONE ecosystem, signaling the potential for diversifying its AI B2B business model.

LG AI Talk Concert 2025 also featured a presentation by Professor Minkyung Baek of Seoul National University’s Department of Life Sciences, who discussed the progress of “Next-Generation Protein Structure Prediction AI” for AI-driven drug discovery. Professor Baek detailed the development of an AI model that surpasses Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold, potentially marking a new era in disease treatment.

Arman Sahovic, APAC Head of Data Platform Solutions at the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), introduced business intelligence services developed with EXAONE. Mr. Sahovic explained that LSEG and LG AI Research are collaborating to create a service that predicts investment asset return trends and generates reports based on LSEG’s data, news, and disclosure information, thereby aiding investment decisions globally.

LG AI Research also highlighted its pioneering and impactful journey since its establishment in December 2020, challenging uncharted territories to solve complex industrial problems and realize the value of AI:

  • In 2021, LG AI Research first demonstrated its AI technological competitiveness by securing first place in the SQuAD leaderboard, an AI English reading comprehension competition.
  • In December 2021, it released EXAONE 1.0, Korea’s first multimodal AI model, marking a significant step in developing proprietary AI foundational models.
  • In 2022, it achieved a world first by showcasing collaborative works between AI and human fashion designers at New York Fashion Week, earning a Gold Award at the New York Festivals Advertising Awards for its innovation.

This year, LG AI Research continues its relentless pursuit of innovation, releasing EXAONE Deep in March, Korea’s first reasoning AI model, followed by EXAONE 4.0 in July, Korea’s first hybrid AI model combining general and reasoning models.

The combined download count for LG AI Research’s large language models (LLMs) – EXAONE 3.0, EXAONE 3.5, the reasoning AI model EXAONE Deep for agentic AI, and the hybrid AI model EXAONE 4.0 – have exceeded 5 million, a record high among Korean AI companies.
