Acquiring these skills can certainly benefit workers, regardless of their sectors or functions, to adapt well to digital transformation and efficiently navigate workplace disruptions.”

“In addition, many of the top job roles, which employers across industries are looking to hire, are digital in nature. For those who are keen on acquiring deep-tech skills, they could deepen their knowledge in high-growth areas such as Machine Learning and Big Data (Data Engineering), as the career trajectories for talent in such roles are very promising due to the talent crunch in these fields.”

More than half of APAC Healthcare Technology start-ups surveyed see the pandemic as an enabler for innovation while talent recruitment is reported as the biggest challenge by the majority

Medtronic hosted its first APAC Innovation Conference to discuss with key stakeholders about opportunities and challenges faced by healthcare technology start-ups and SMEs in Asia Pacific

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 16 March 2022 – Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT), a global leader in healthcare technology, today held its first hybrid conference, Medtronic Open Innovation Conference (MAIC 2022), in Singapore, themed ‘Accelerating Healthcare Technology Innovation’. Dedicated to the medical technology and healthcare technology start-up scene in APAC, the event was attended by Minister of State, Alvin Tan, Ministry of Trade and Industry and Culture, Community and Youth, Government of Singapore, as its guest of honor.

(L-R) Chris Lee, President of Medtronic APAC, presents the Medtronic Mission Book to Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan at the Medtronic APAC Innovation Conference.

(L-R) Chris Lee, President of Medtronic APAC, presents the Medtronic Mission Book to Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan at the Medtronic APAC Innovation Conference.

Aimed at discussing the challenges and opportunities available around the healthcare and technology ecosystem in medtech, the conference saw the attendance of over 200 delegates from start-ups, government institutions, and healthcare practitioners along with Medtronic’s partner organizations. Taking the lead in this conversation, Medtronic also unveiled a whitepaper titled ‘Asia Pacific’s Healthcare Technologies Ecosystem: Enhancing Start-up and SME success’, written by the Economist Impact and supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Cementing Medtronic’s commitment to innovation in healthcare technology, winners from its recent Medtronic APAC Innovation Challenge were also announced at the conference.

Medtronic APAC Innovation Challenge – a reflection of the innovation boom experienced during pandemic

The Medtronic-Economist Impact Whitepaper revealed that up to 55% of respondents cited COVID-19 as an enabler of innovative ideas, rather than a detractor. A reflection of this innovation boom, Medtronic saw overwhelming applications from 323 start-ups and business enterprises from 46 countries across Asia Pacific and beyond vying for a potential collaboration with Medtronic valued up to US$200,000. Five start-ups were crowned winners of the Medtronic APAC Innovation Challenge at the conference. More details about the winners can be found here.

The survey saw a combination of factors encompassing, better government support (38%), greater collaboration with private sector (37%), increased funding availability (36%) and cross-learning platforms between organizations (35%) as the drivers of innovation acceleration. This led to the observation that a multi-sectoral collaborative approach, led by governments in the region, was a key enabler for driving innovations. While not all findings were a surprise, the scale of some findings did highlight the magnitude of some issues facing the healthcare sector overall. One such example was the overwhelming response citing recruitment as the leading cause of concern for over 80% of start-ups surveyed. This echoes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) prediction of a global shortfall of 14.5 million healthcare workers by 2030[i].

This first-ever study on the region’s healthcare technology sector involves inputs from 150 executives from startups and business enterprises in APAC. The paper also includes in-depth interviews with several industry leaders from the healthcare technology sector as well as from representatives from companies in the technology sector such as SAP.iO Foundries and Microsoft Health.

For more information on the whitepaper please refer to the factsheet or download the whitepaper here.

Drivers and barriers emerged in first-ever APAC study on medtech start-ups and SMES addressed at conference

Chris Lee, President for Medtronic, APAC said, “No one company can do healthcare alone. As the global leader of healthcare technology, Medtronic takes the accountability to lead the conversation and encourage more meaningful collaborations across the innovation ecosystem. That’s why we launched the open innovation platform and hosted today’s conference. It’s great to see how all the stakeholders come forward to share their perspectives and are committed to working together for better healthcare. We also appreciate all the idea submissions and congratulate the final winners. More importantly, I hope that our joint efforts will lead to many new and improved solutions to meet the region’s unique healthcare needs.”

The conference also featured a panel discussion between Chris Lee, Choo Heng Tong, executive vice president, New Ventures and Innovation, EDB, Ms. Lalitha Bhaskara, vice president, SAP.iO Foundries, and Dr. Rocky Lee, chief operating officer, Ventureblick. The panel weighed in on how governments can play a role of a facilitator towards driving collaboration for innovation in healthcare, the criticality of understanding patient pathways and healthcare economics for a successful development of healthcare technology innovation, and the talent challenges faced by the startup ecosystem in healthcare technology.

Also presenting at the conference were Dr. Tyler Hyungtaek Rim, chief medical officer, MediWhale, Dr. Jade Kua, senior consultant, Emergency Medicine, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Jade Life and Wellness Founder, and Shakthi Nagappan, director Life Sciences and Pharma & CEO, Hyderabad Pharma City Ltd & BioAsia, Govt. of Telangana, India.

The conference and the challenge come on the heels of Medtronic’s plan to invest up to US$50million under its Open Innovation Platform over the next five years and the upcoming Digital Medtronic Innovation Center (dMIC) in Singapore, poised to serve the APAC region. This was announced in October 2021 at a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony with EDB. The MOU has enabled Medtronic and EDB to jointly access the regional start-up landscape, to support talent and technology development and to help Medtronic leverage AI, Robotics and Digital Health to address patient needs in the region.

Goh Wan Yee, senior vice president, Healthcare, EDB, said, “Medtronic’s decision to drive its Open Innovation push from Singapore underscores our position as a global business hub where companies can successfully collaborate with key stakeholders to capture new growth opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region. The discussions at MAIC 2022 are further testament to the robust ecosystem of talent and start-ups that Medtronic’s innovation team will be able to tap here. We look forward to partnering with more companies like Medtronic to engage and develop meaningful partnerships with innovators to bring life-saving solutions to the market from Singapore.”

Organized with the support of EDB, the conference was held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore and live streamed over LinkedIn.

Sa Sa Debuts on foodpanda mall Providing Anti-epidemic Products and Enhancing OMO Shopping Experience

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 16 March 2022 – Sa Sa International Holdings Limited (“Sa Sa” or the “Group”, stock code: 0178) is pleased to announce today its official entry onto foodpanda mall in Hong Kong, an online grocery and goods shopping mall under foodpanda. Through foodpanda mall’s round-the-clock delivery service, Sa Sa will open up for local customers a more convenient way of shopping to enhance customer experience. The move also marks Sa Sa’s advancement in the development of online-merge-offline (“OMO”) functions.

Sa Sa is offering about 700 selected products on foodpanda mall, including anti-epidemic products for which Hong Kong citizens have an urgent need, and popular products such as cosmetics, skincare, fragrance, hair care and body care products as well as health supplements. After customers have placed orders at the online supermarket, foodpanda’s couriers will collect the goods at Sa Sa’s physical stores and deliver them to the customers in as fast as 10 minutes. Customers can thus quickly obtain the products without going out, especially meeting their urgent needs for anti-epidemic products and their favourite items within the cosmetic and personal care categories. This service will initially be piloted at 20 of Sa Sa’s stores and will be rolled out at more stores in the future.

Following the launch of the “click-and-collect” service, Sa Sa’s partnership with foodpanda mall will further enhance the OMO development of the Group’s physical stores and its online business in Hong Kong. It also provides customers with one more customer-centric and convenient channel for online shopping, complementing Sa Sa’s shopping website.

Sa Sa and foodpanda mall will be able to manifest their respective advantages in the partnership and generate synergy. As a leading “one-stop beauty product specialty store”, Sa Sa will enrich foodpanda mall’s product assortment with its richly diverse, hot-selling cosmetics, health supplements and anti-epidemic products. Both foodpanda and Sa Sa have large customer bases, which can enable mutual conversion and thus enlarge their respective target customer bases. Sa Sa can also strengthen and expand its own base of young customers by serving foodpanda members who are used to “Quick Commerce”.

Dr Simon Kwok, SBS, JP, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Group, said, “Sa Sa is honoured to have entered foodpanda’s online platform which is widely popular with consumers in Hong Kong. Online shopping is gaining traction. The trend is especially more pronounced amid the raging pandemic as more consumers would rather stay at home than go out to protect themselves against the disease. We believe that foodpanda’s quick delivery meets our customers’ increasing demand for convenient, fast online shopping service. In the light of the urgent demand for anti-epidemic products, we are offering them at foodpanda mall in the hope of providing citizens one more convenient shopping channel to help fight the pandemic. We also hope to enhance the OMO function at Sa Sa’s operation through the partnership with foodpanda mall so as to provide customers with a more seamless and convenient shopping experience.”

Ryan Lai, Managing Director of foodpanda Hong Kong, said, “Via our mature logistics infrastructure, our dedicated delivery fleet and ongoing data analysis, we hope to continue to pioneer ‘Q-Commerce’, providing quick and convenient delivery service to meet the needs of Hong Kong people. We are extremely pleased to have Sa Sa as a foodpanda mall retail partner, benefiting from complementary strengths in advancing each other’s OMO business strategy, and elevating customers’ shopping experience for personal care, health and beauty products etc. This partnership also expands and diversifies foodpanda mall’s product offerings, to better satisfy the wants and needs of our customers.”

To celebrate its partnership with Sa Sa, foodpanda mall launches promotional offers from 15 March to 30 April . Customers will enjoy a HK$50 discount upon spending of HK$400 or above with their first purchase at Sa Sa on foodpanda mall by entering the promotional offer code “SASA” while the offers last.

Treehouse Raises US$18 Million to Establish a Standard for DeFi Analytics

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 16 March 2022 – Treehouse, a Web3 company transforming on-chain data into meaningful metrics to help decentralized finance (DeFi) investors make informed financial decisions, announced an US$18 million seed round raise.

An undisclosed large FinTech investor led the round with participation from strategic investors, including Mirana Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Binance, MassMutual Ventures, Global Founders Capital, Jump Capital, GSR, Wintermute, Do Kwon of Terraform Labs, senior executives from SoftBank Vision Fund, and more.

Founded just 11 months ago and fueled by the team’s commitment toward financial inclusion, Treehouse is building the infrastructure required to enable everyday people to fully harness financial products and services made possible by DeFi. Treehouse’s ecosystem of products will empower and shape the way participants interact with the DeFi economy.

David Toh from Mirana Ventures, Venture Partner of Bybit and BitDAO, said, “As an early supporter and investor of Treehouse, we are excited by the growth of the company and what the team has achieved in a short time. We believe in backing builders who have the grit to challenge the status quo and launch differentiated and innovative products in DeFi.”

The Most Comprehensive DeFi Analytics Platform

Harvest, the company’s flagship product, indexes blockchains and deconstructs users’ DeFi positions to present historical data, profit & loss (P&L), and risk metrics on a seamless and highly intuitive user interface. The analytics platform provides information previously unavailable in DeFi and establishes a standard for users to analyze the DeFi risks associated with their current and historical positions.

“As the number of DeFi protocols, supported L1s, L2s, and bridges increase over time, Treehouse’s approach of building an in-house system-of-record for every DeFi user will become critically valuable and a great differentiator. On top of the technical accuracy is a beautiful, simplified dashboard experience optimized for desktop and mobile to cater to both advanced and retail investors,” said Hemant Mohapatra and Marsha Sugana from Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Dominic Chrumka from Wintermute said, “Wintermute is proud to be supporting Treehouse in their mission to make the management of DeFi portfolios easy and meaningful. Their cross-chain dashboards and comprehensive analytics, especially the ability to track P&L attributed to pools in which you are providing liquidity, are game-changing for the industry.”

Harvest and Beyond

Since its founding in mid-2021, Treehouse has grown exponentially to over 100 people and launched Harvest Beta. The new funds raised will go toward accelerating Treehouse’s growth by:

  • Expanding Harvest’s blockchain and protocol coverage
  • Building more products and features for retail and institutional users
  • Scaling its infrastructure for users to experience a highly seamless and low latency platform
  • Building a well-informed and innovative community through curated content (in-house research) and incentive programs
  • Hiring world-class talent across their global offices

“We are grateful to have with us a group of partners with such deep technical expertise and networks across both cryptocurrency and traditional finance ecosystems. This funding round will enable us to execute on our vision to help users confidently navigate DeFi,” said Brandon Goh, CEO of Treehouse.

Melvin Hade, Partner at Global Founders Capital APAC, said, “With the rising number of investors hopping onto the DeFi bandwagon, this is the perfect time for Treehouse to bring out its state-of-the-art analytics platform to the public. When we first spoke to them, we were excited about the insights they had that led them to build a unique product that the world had never seen before. As one of the earliest backers of Treehouse, we are fully committed to their progress and excited about the long-term partnership.”
