The Inaugural VinUniversity Global Case Competition Awards Prizes To Global Teams

HANOI, VIETNAM – Media OutReach – 28 December 2021 – The “VinUniversity Global Case Competition 2021” (VGCC), organized by VinUniversity, has just concluded. Three teams from the United States, Finland, and Vietnam pushed ahead of over a thousand teams from 200 leading universities in 30 countries to score the top three prizes.

The Award Ceremony of VinUniversity Global Case Competition 2021

The theme of the 2021 competition was “VinFast Goes Global”. The case, written by Professor Michael Dixon of Utah State University and developed in consultation with faculty members from Cornell University and VinFast executives, described the complex and highly topical challenges facing VinFast as it enters the US market with its brand new Electric Vehicles. Teams were required to develop strategies, solutions and implementation plans for this expansion, taking into consideration several challenges facing the Electric Vehicle market in general, and VinFast in particular.

Discussing the topic of the competition, Professor Edward McLaughlin – Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, and member of the competition’s judging Panel – commented: “The teams had many creative and outstanding ideas. Unlike other competitions that use hypothetical or past cases, VGCC poses a realistic and current problem facing a business.”.

Over 4,000 students from over 200 universities from 30 countries formed 1,085 teams to participate in the competition. The competition had three stages and teams had to qualify to move to the next round of the competition. Only ten teams were selected in the Final Presentation round of the competition. In addition to submitting a detailed twenty- page plan for addressing the six challenges presented in the case, the teams also presented their key ideas before a panel of judges comprising of VinFast senior executives, and faculty from other top US based universities, and answered many tough questions from the judges.

“We are delighted to establish this global case competition because it provides experiential learning opportunities for students and helps them develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, and brings people together to solve real world problems,” said Professor Rohit Verma, the Provost of VinUniversity.

True to the academic and student-centric mission of the VGCC, VinUniversity organized three informational webinars to help the students prepare for the competition attended by over 1,000 participants. Faculty from VinUniversity, Cornell University, the CEO of VinFast, and case writer provided valuable insights to students about how to make their case analyses compelling and their recommendations defensible. As Professor Dixon advised “This case is an opportunity for students to make persuasive arguments regarding the goodness of their solutions. We are not looking for one right answer. Instead, we are looking for how the students come with their answers, how well they describe it and how well they can defend it.”

To make the process of evaluation fair and objective, the judges developed comprehensive and multi-dimensional rubrics for each stage of the competition, designed to assess the depth of the research and analysis, the details of the proposed implementation plan and the quality of the team presentation in the final round.

The First Prize went to EVA – made up of 4 members from 4 different universities: DePauw University (USA), Tampere University of Applied Science (Finland), Fulbright University (Vietnam), and Foreign Trade University Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). EVA successfully convinced the judges with the team’s strategy to position VinFast as the best option for the “Wait and See” segment – customers who are careful with their finances and make purchasing decisions based on a car’s features and ease of use. This was considered a disruptive approach because traditional EV-makers tend to focus on early adopters of the technology.

The Second Prize went to VinFast WinFast – consisting of 4 students from VinUniversity, with their proposal to market the cars to the extended-Millennials (Gen Y) segment, with ages ranging from 25 to 56. The group’s core proposal centered around Vivi Smart Companion, which supports users in their entire customer journey with their VinFast car, designed to build a life-long, personal connection with the company and their cars. The Third Prize went to 4 students from Juniata College (USA), Villanova University (USA) and British University Vietnam with their “Influencer Marketing” strategy.

The total prize value for the 3 winning teams was approximately 400 million VND, equivalent to 17.000 USD, with the First Prize being worth over 200 million VND (equivalent to 10.000 USD).

The contestants came from the world’s top universities, such as Cambridge University (UK), Oxford Universities (UK), Duke University (USA), Cornell University (USA), National University of Singapore (Singapore), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Monash University (Australia), Yonsei University (South Korea), VinUniversity, etc., and the students collectively spent 14,000 hours researching and devising solutions.

Mr. Craig Westbrook – Chief Service Officer from Vinfast US expressed his impression “What a competition, what fantastic contestants you were, truly inspiring, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that I would say companies like VinFast are certainly looking for in our future talents.”

Back to School with Dad encourages fathers to be more involved in their children’s schooling journey

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 28 December 2021 – Fathers from over 120 pre-schools, primary and secondary schools as well as institutes of higher learning will be participating in the Back to School with Dad initiative for the next academic year in 2022. Among these, fathers from 93 schools are taking part in Back to School with Dad for the first time.

Organised by Centre for Fathering, MUMs for Life and DADs for Life, in partnership with Families for Life and in support of the Made For Families initiative, Back to School with Dad aims to encourage fathers to play a more active role in their children’s schooling journey.

Through the initiative, which began in 2006, fathers are encouraged to take time out from work to accompany their children to school in the first two days of the new school year and send them notes of encouragement so as to ease them in . The dates for Back to School with Dad 2022 are 4 and 5 January 2022.

In previous years, hard copy Back to School with Dad cards were disseminated to the schools for fathers to pen notes for their children. Due to COVID-19 restrictions affecting logistics of cards distribution, this year’s Back to School with Dad has gone virtual! Fathers (and mothers) can download the card templates from the Back to School with Dad web page and personalise a note of encouragement to be printed out and placed into the children’s lunchbox or school bags so that their children can be pleasantly surprised during recess or sent to their children’s mobile phones for the older children.

” Research* shows that when fathers are engaged in children’s education, their children perform better academically and are better able to adapt to their schooling journey emotionally and socially. They are also less likely to drop out and exhibit undesirable behaviour in school. Helping my children get ready for the new school year – from purchasing shoes to getting hairs cuts – and sending them to school regularly, is my way of forming precious memories with them in their growing up years ,” said Mr Bryan Tan, CEO, Centre for Fathering, MUMs for Life and DADs for Life. “We hope that many more fathers and schools will appreciate the importance of a father’s involvement in his child’s schooling journey and pledge their support towards the Back to School with Dad initiative.”

“Showing love and commitment to our family are the values that Families for Life holds dear. Being personally involved in our child’s key milestones is very important so we hope more fathers will commit their time to accompany their children to school on their first day. This intimate time together will be a precious memory that both father and child will remember fondly for many years to come”, shared Families for Life Council Chairman, Mr Ishak Ismail. As a Champion of MSF’s Alliance for Action Focal Area 1, Mr Ishak Ismail also supports parents in their journey by strengthening engagement and awareness of parenting programmes, resources and support groups in the community, as that would build stronger family relationships, for life.

Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Second Minister for Education, said, ” Parenting has changed through the years in several ways, and the role of fathers in the family is becoming more important, especially throughout their schooling years. Gone are the days where fathers are regarded as feared disciplinarians in the family. Today’s fathers must connect emotionally with their children and provide unconditional love to their children.

It is heartening to see fathers today, more actively involved in their children’s lives. This contributes to the child’s emotional health, overall wellness, social development and self-respect. As fathers, we play a unique role in our child’s life and make a significant difference in shaping their self-esteem, character and values.

As a father myself, I try to have regular and open communication with my children to understand them and let them know that I am always there for them. Being present during their key milestones like sports day or drama performance is critical as it tells our children that they are important that we will set aside time for them.”

Dr Maliki added, “Through the Back to School with Dad initiative, we hope to remind fathers to be more involved in their children’s schooling journey. Especially, on a day to day basis. Support your child’s schooling journey by helping them prepare for school, sending them to school when school re-opens and being involved in the school by volunteering in DADs for Life Father Groups. This promotes stronger father-child bonding. It also strengthens the relationship with the school, increasing the child’s confidence attending school.

I look forward to seeing more fathers be involved in their children’s journey and make time to send their children to school and to write notes of encouragement to them on a regular basis and not just only on the first few days of school. Be inspired to make your father-child interaction more achievable, enjoyable and celebrated in the community.”

Fathers prepare children for school

Mr Joshua Wee, a father of four children aged 6 to 14 who works in human resource, said that it is important for him to be involved in his children’s schooling journey as that makes memories father and child can look back together in future. He said, “I hope that my involvement in their current schooling journey will lead them to be as involved in their own children’s journey in the future. Watching my children grow up, developing their own character and finding their own way is so fascinating. Parenting is a journey made so much more enjoyable if we are involved.”

For his youngest child who is going to primary one in 2022, Mr Wee will prepare him with “dry runs” at the coffeeshop buying his own food and teach him how to count his pocket money.

Senior engineer Mr Tun Tun plays an active role in guiding his daughter, who is heading to secondary one in 2022, on her education pathways. Recently, he discussed secondary school options with her after the release of the PSLE results to better understand her preferences. He said, “Everybody needs someone who can guide them to improve their lives and careers, and this person can be the father or the mother. The father or mother is the most important person to their children and is the first role model for them.”

Razer Merchant Services, the First Merchant Acquirer to Enable DuitNow QR, Cross-Border QR & Online Banking/Wallets for Merchants

Razer Merchant Services is the first Merchant Acquirer to enable PayNet’s Real-Time Retail Payments Platform (RPP) full suite of payment methods to its merchants to accept domestic and cross-border QR payments.

SHAH ALAM, MALAYSIA – Media OutReach – 28 December 2021 – Razer Merchant Services (RMS), the B2B arm of Razer Fintech, today announces it has become the first Merchant Acquirer to enable all three channels for PayNet’s Real-time Payments Platform, DuitNow. The payment channels include DuitNow QR, Cross-Border QR payments, and DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets, which RMS has enabled for online e-commerce and offline physical merchants.

QR enabled payments are experiencing unprecedented momentum in emerging markets and are accelerating movements away from cash in the ‘new normal’, according to a report by McKinsey & Company. Currently, the widely accepted DuitNow QR Codes are limited to local participating banks’ e-wallets, while Cross-Border QR codes with DuitNow QR will enable real-time instant payments for retail and e-commerce merchants based in Malaysia from tourists using their respective foreign banks or e-wallets applications. RMS merchants can expect a further extension of their business’ reach as cross-border payment linkages with surrounding Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia and Singapore are scheduled after Thailand.

“Razer Fintech and our B2B arm, RMS, are excited to be the first Merchant Acquirer to enable all three Duitnow payment channels, further cementing our leadership in delivering new payment product features, in partnership with Paynet. We are very proud to enable these developments with PayNet’s Real-time Payments Platform for our regional and global merchants from both online and offline verticals. In times where physical contact needs to be limited, these developments will accelerate payment conversions and will be an effective contactless alternative to cash payments for both merchants and customers.” said Lee Li Meng, CEO of Razer Fintech.

“PayNet is delighted to have Razer Merchant Services as our DuitNow QR participant. RMS is among the earliest to adopt cross-border QR payments. With its large base in Malaysia, we are confident RMS’ merchants will reap more benefits of going cashless once cross-border QR payments acceptance from foreign visitors is enabled.” said PayNet Malaysia’s Director of Retail Payments Services, Mr. Khairuan Abdul Rahman.

One of RMS’ merchants, Doctor2U, will vastly benefit from Cross-Border QR with DuitNow QR when accepting payments from foreign visitors into Malaysia. Doctor2U, who is BP Healthcare Group’s homegrown technology arm, had previously set up a state-of-the-art Covid-19 screening facility at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with a capacity of screening 45,000 travelers daily.

As digital payments accelerate, local customers can also look forward to a better customer experience with DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets. The service provides a more seamless e-commerce or m-commerce check out experience by enabling simple redirection to customers’ Online Banking or e-wallets app where instant payments can be made with over 40 Banks and e-wallets on board with more expected to join by the first half of 2022. DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets will be a development to link online banking and e-wallets to provide convenience for customers on merchant applications, through application-to-application payment verifications and significantly reduce payment friction and cart abandonments.

RMS aims to enable 3,000 physical offline acceptance points with DuitNow QR and Cross-Border payments with DuitNow QR by 2022. In the same period, RMS will onboard 1,000 online merchants with the full suite of DuitNow QR, Cross-Border QR, and DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets through a simple Application Programming Interface (API) integration with RMS. The DuitNow payment solutions will enable businesses to accept payments with just a single unified QR that allows interoperability between participating banks and e-wallets.
