Laos will launch another round of Covid-19 vaccinations for medical personnel and at-risk groups across the country this week.

According to a report by Lao National Radio, some 150,000 medical workers and members of at-risk groups across country will begin receiving vaccinations against Covid-19.

Head of the Department of Hygiene and Health Promotion under Ministry of Health, Dr. Phonepaseuth Ounaphom, says the vaccinations will be taken from the batch of 300,000 Sinopharm vaccines donated by China.

The new round of vaccinations against Covid-19 will begin on Friday and continue until next week for the first dose, with second doses to be given early next month, according to Dr. Phonepaseuth Ounaphom.

“Over 1,000 Lao medical workers and at-risk frontline workers have already received two doses of China’s Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine without any side effects,” Dr. Phonepaseuth Ounaphom said.

This week’s vaccinations will include people in at-risk groups between the ages of 18 and 60, who will also be given priority. The groups classified as at-risk include medical personell, the elderly, people with a chronic illness, and migrant workers.

The Lao Ministry of Health has said that it expects 20 percent of the Lao population to be vaccinated against Covid-19 by the end of this year.

Laos has confirmed 45 cases of Covid-19, with the latest case reported early last month, while the country has recorded zero deaths from the coronavirus.
