Loca to Transition to Fully Electric Fleet by 2030

This Week

As more businesses transition to environmentally conscious practices, the LOCA ride-hailing service is at the forefront of this movement, providing Electric Vehicle (EV) services to its customers since 2018.

Mr. Souliyo Vongdala, Co-Founder and CEO of LOCA, says the company has made the switch to EV to provide an environmentally friendly journey for passengers, along with the aim of reducing air pollution, and lowering the volume of CO2 being released into the air.

As the largest online taxi service provider in Laos, LOCA says it now has more than 750 taxis in its network, with 114 of these made up of electric vehicles. The company plans to have 4,000-5,000 vehicles in service by 2030, composed entirely of EVs.

The company has launched an initiative aimed at helping its drivers make a smooth transition to EVs, including providing financial mechanisms for those who may have previously grappled with the upfront costs.

The switch to EVs has also helped drivers, who have struggled with rising fuel prices, while the new vehicles have also had a positive impact on the local community, with the transition also aligned with Laos’ move towards a more green and sustainable economy.

LOCA’s initiative is an example of how private companies can contribute to promoting sustainable practices,” says Souliyo.

As of 2022, the company boasts more than seven charging stations for electric vehicles, with three more undergoing construction. The charging stations are located around the country from Vientiane Capital to Vang Vieng, and even all the way down south to Savannakhet and Pakse.

In December last year, the company made a splash in the fintech sector by launching LOCA Pay, a platform enabling seamless QR Code payments via credit card.

With more and more tourists visiting Laos, LOCA teamed up with Joint Development Bank (JDB) to create the LOCA PAY system, allowing foreign visitors to make payments via QR Code, just like locals.

LOCA has established itself as a leading innovator in Laos with its fleet of electric vehicles and advanced payment platform. These cutting-edge technologies have set the company apart, solidifying its reputation as a pioneer in the industry.
