Mayor of Vientiane Capital, Mr. Atsaphanthong Siphandone, says he will ensure that noise pollution is properly addressed by 1 April.

Speaking at a recent meeting to discuss solutions to the problem, the mayor noted that while the city had issued updated regulations in September 2020 to control noise pollution caused by restaurants and entertainment venues, a lack of coordination between relevant sectors had made enforcement difficult.

According to Mayor Atsaphanthong, the Vientiane Capital Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism (ICT) will continue to serve as the coordinating center for the various authorities involved in solving the problem, working under the guidance of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism.

The relevant committee will also be tasked with developing a plan to inspect restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues, including both regular and random inspections, to ensure businesses are strictly operating in accordance with regulations.

The Vientiane City Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism will also create a list of licensed restaurants, karaoke bars, and nightclubs as a basis for monitoring activities.

Mayor Atsaphanthong emphasized that better coordination among relevant sectors and proper implementation of regulations is necessary to address the problem.

The issue of noise pollution has been a longstanding problem in Vientiane Capital, with residents complaining about the disruptive effects of loud music and other noise from restaurants and entertainment venues.

The recent meeting indicates a renewed effort to address this problem and improve the quality of life for residents of the city.
