Laos Gears Up for 12th Party Congress to Appoint New Leadership

This Week

Laos has scheduled 6 to 8 January 2026 for the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), a political event that will shape the country’s leadership and development direction for the next five years and beyond.

Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith chaired the 12th Plenary Meeting of the Party Central Committee’s 11th term on 26 December, where all Party Central Committee members approved the dates.

During the meeting, party leaders assessed the Congress’s overall readiness, confirmed that officials were finalizing key documents, reports, and organizational arrangements, and agreed on measures to strengthen preparations ahead of the gathering.

Key Agenda of the 12th Party Congress

The 12th Party Congress will review the party’s achievements over the past five years and adopt a resolution outlining national development directions for 2026–2030.

It will also set the stage for key political milestones, beginning with the National Election scheduled for 22 February 2026 by the National Election Committee, in which citizens will vote to elect members of the 10th Legislature of the National Assembly (NA).

Following the election, the inaugural session of the 10th NA will elect key state leaders, including the NA President and Vice President, the country’s President and Vice Presidents, the Prime Minister, as well as the President of the People’s Supreme Court and the Supreme Prosecutor. The session will also endorse the new government cabinet.

In addition, the NA will approve the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (10th NSEDP) for 2026–2030.

Deciding the Party’s Direction, Future of Laos

The National Party Congress, held every five years, brings together delegates selected from provincial and ministerial-level Party congresses across the country.

Delegates will elect members of the new Party Central Committee, which will then hold its first session to appoint the Party Secretary General, Politburo members, and other key Party bodies.

This five-year roadmap carries particular significance, as it will guide Laos’ transition from least developed country (LDC) status to a higher development level. The Lao leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the country achieves LDC graduation in 2026.
